Thermalization of Levy flights: Path-wise picture in 2D
2013
We analyze two-dimensional (2D) random systems driven by a symmetric L\'{e}vy stable noise which, under the sole influence of external (force) potentials $\Phi (x) $, asymptotically set down at Boltzmann-type thermal equilibria. Such behavior is excluded within standard ramifications of the Langevin approach to L\'{e}vy flights. In the present paper we address the response of L\'{e}vy noise not to an external conservative force field, but directly to its potential $\Phi (x)$. We prescribe a priori the target pdf $\rho_*$ in the Boltzmann form $\sim \exp[- \Phi (x)]$ and next select the L\'evy noise of interest. Given suitable initial data, this allows to infer a reliable path-wise approxima…
Gender as a theme and a concept in teacher students' Masters' theses
2014
In this study, Master’s theses from the field of teacher education have been analysed from the perspective of equality and gender aware research and education. Master’s theses from the field of teacher education reveal something about the world views constructed in teacher education. This study examines which kind of 1) selected topics and themes and their justifications, 2) conceptualisation of gender and 3) educational conclusions connected to gender topics do the Master's thesis contain. The material was selected from the thesis databases of two Finnish university teacher education units. All theses from the field of education completed in 2000-2007, with names or abstracts including wor…
Two-Color Single-Photon Emission from In As Quantum Dots: Toward Logic Information Management Using Quantum Light
2014
In this work, we propose the use of the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss interferometric technique and a switchable two-color excitation method for evaluating the exciton and noncorrelated electron-hole dynamics associated with single photon emission from indium arsenide (InAs) self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Using a microstate master equation model we demonstrate that our single QDs are described by nonlinear exciton dynamics. The simultaneous detection of two-color, single photon emission from InAs QDs using these nonlinear dynamics was used to design a NOT AND logic transference function. This computational functionality combines the advantages of working with light/photons input/output device…
IL-23: a master regulator in Crohn disease
2007
Three studies should shift thinking about the causes of inflammatory bowel disease. It seems that researchers have been focusing on the wrong cytokine as a driving force.
A 1D coupled Schrödinger drift-diffusion model including collisions
2005
We consider a one-dimensional coupled stationary Schroedinger drift-diffusion model for quantum semiconductor device simulations. The device domain is decomposed into a part with large quantum effects (quantum zone) and a part where quantum effects are negligible (classical zone). We give boundary conditions at the classic-quantum interface which are current preserving. Collisions within the quantum zone are introduced via a Pauli master equation. To illustrate the validity we apply the model to three resonant tunneling diodes.
Quantum coherence and fast-gain effects in laser modelocking: The coherent master equation
2021
Modelocking embraces a variety of techniques leading to the periodic emission of ultrashort laser pulses, typically on the picosecond scale and below, whose impact in science and technology can be hardly exaggerated.
Universal decay cascade model for dynamic quantum dot initialization.
2009
Dynamic quantum dots can be formed by time-dependent electrostatic potentials in nanoelectronic devices, such as gate- or surface-acoustic-wave-driven electron pumps. Ability to control the number of captured electrons with high precision is required for applications in fundamental metrology and quantum information processing. In this work we propose and quantify a scheme to initialize quantum dots with a controllable number of electrons. It is based on the stochastic decrease in the electron number of a shrinking dynamic quantum dot and is described by a nuclear decay cascade model with "isotopes" being different charge states of the dot. Unlike the natural nuclei, the artificial confineme…
Collective decoherence of cold atoms coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate
2009
We examine the time evolution of cold atoms (impurities) interacting with an environment consisting of a degenerate bosonic quantum gas. The impurity atoms differ from the environment atoms, being of a different species. This allows one to superimpose two independent trapping potentials, each being effective only on one atomic kind, while transparent to the other. When the environment is homogeneous and the impurities are confined in a potential consisting of a set of double wells, the system can be described in terms of an effective spin-boson model, where the occupation of the left or right well of each site represents the two (pseudo)-spin states. The irreversible dynamics of such system…
Robust non-Markovianity in ultracold gases
2012
We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on a probe qubit interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) reservoir. The zero-temperature case was studied in [Haikka P et al 2011 Phys. Rev. A 84 031602], where we proposed a method to probe the effects of dimensionality and scattering length of a BEC based on its behavior as an environment. Here we show that the sensitivity of the probe qubit is remarkably robust against thermal noise. We give an intuitive explanation for the thermal resilience, showing that it is due to the unique choice of the probe qubit architecture of our model.
