Error and Uncertainty Analysis of the Residual Stresses Computed by Using the Hole Drilling Method
2010
: The hole-drilling method is one of the most used techniques for the experimental analysis of the residual stresses in mechanical components. For both through-thickness uniform and non-uniform residual stress distributions, its application is standardised by the ASTM E837-08. In accordance with the ASTM limitations, the analysis of uniform residual stresses, to which the present work deals with, leads in general to results with a maximum bias of about 10%. Unfortunately, in general the user does not have appropriate procedures to estimate the actual stress error; consequently, if one or more of the experimental influence parameters fall out of the corresponding standard limitations, the c…
A novel improved matlab-based software for the electric and magnetic analysis and design of rotating electrical machines
2015
The aim of this paper is to present a software for the analysis and design of windings of rotating electrical machines, considering both the electric and the magnetic specifications on the machine. The considered machines are induction motors (IM) and PM synchronous motors (PMSM). The software accounts for the case of buried magnets (IPMSM), but with some limits, because the calculations require a much more detailed analysis regarding the magnetic circuit. However, this initial limitation of the software, that will be removed in a later version, does not constitute a major limitation as confirmed by the examples presented in this paper.
Advantages of fitting contrast curves using logistic function: a technical note.
2013
Objective The aim of this article is to demonstrate how the contrast properties of an imaging system can be ideally fitted with the use of stripe patterns and the logistic function. Study Design Stripe patterns with defined amounts of line pairs (lp/mm) per mm (10-20 lp/mm) were recorded with the use of digital photostimulable storage phosphor. Scan data and normalized image data were analyzed with the use of ImageJ and MatLab to calculate different contrast curves. Results For original scan data, the goodness of fit was 0.0000019 (sum of squared error [SSE]). The R-square was 0.9998. For normalized data the goodness of fit was 0.0007 (SSE) and the R-square 0.998. An amount of 50% contrast …
Selective harmonic mitigation with asymmetrical staircase voltage waveform for a three-phase five-level Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter
2020
Selective harmonics elimination or mitigation strategies are used in all applications where it is necessary to rise the efficiency and reliability of the overall system. This paper presents a simple approach to reduce the low order harmonics amplitude of an asymmetrical staircase voltage waveform for a five-level, three-phase Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter without solving non-linear equations. Through this simple approach, polynomial equations to evaluate the control angels in real-time operations have been found. The effectiveness of the harmonic mitigation method has been tested through the simulation analysis in MatLab/PLECS environment.
A platform-independent software for the design and analysis of windings of rotating electrical machines
2014
In this paper the Authors present a highly modular and platform-independent software, being based on the MATLAB® programming environment, which is proposed as a valuable aid in the design and analysis of the windings of rotating electrical machines. Unlike the major part of the commercial software, the cases of both symmetric and asymmetric (unbalanced) windings with any number of phases are here considered. The software can perform a considerable amount of calculations in order to determine automatically the optimal structure of the winding starting from its specifications. It is also able to draw the winding map and gives the results of calculation for the harmonic winding factors. The re…
Fixed speed wind turbine generator model validation and dynamic simulation using Matlab/Simulink
2007
In the last two decades an increasing amount of electricity has been generated from renewable sources in order to mitigate the environmental impact of the conventional power plants. In the next future wind turbines may affect the behaviour of electrical power system. This paper describes the model of a typical fixed speed wind turbine connected to the grid; the model is developed in the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink. It’s composed by the aerodynamic system, the shaft model (two-mass system), the induction generator (fifth order model) and the stall control system of the wind turbine rotor. The validation of the wind turbine model is made in steady-state operation, and the results are veri…
Impact of integrating photovoltaic based DG on distribution network harmonics
2017
The process of integrating various distributed generation (DG) technologies in power system networks is increasing rapidly in the recent years. One major concern about the integration of DGs is their impact on network harmonics. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects caused by the integration of photovoltaic DG in distribution networks on system harmonics. The penetration level, number of DG units, and their location are used as parameters in order to verify the effects of DG on system harmonics. Moreover, a study of single and double tuned filters is conducted as harmonics mitigation techniques. Detailed simulations using Matlab/Simulink are inserted in order to explain and ve…
Tuning a Mamdani Fuzzy Controller with an Imperialist Competitive Algorithm
2021
We have implemented a fuzzy controller with a view to regulating a single-input and single-output second-order linear system. The fuzzy controller was a Mamdami proportional-derivative controller. To determine the parameters of the fuzzy controller we have used an imperialist competitive algorithm. This type of algorithm has a long running time so we implemented also a parallel version of the algorithm that we run on HPC Zamolxes located at the Engineering Faculty of “Lucian Blaga” University from Sibiu. Because we did not have on this computer a version of MATLAB allowing to write parallel algorithms, we implemented the entire application in the C language using the MPI library.
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF DILUTE SOLID-LIQUID SUSPENSION IN AN UNBAFFLED STIRRED VESSELS BY A NOVEL PULSED LASER BASED IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE
2009
The availability of experimental information on solid distribution inside stirred tanks is a topic of great importance in several industrial applications. The measurement of solid particle distribution in turbulent multiphase flow is not simple and the development of suitable measurement techniques is still in progress. In this work a novel non-intrusive technique for measuring particle concentration fields in solid-liquid systems is employed. The technique makes use of a laser sheet, a high sensitivity digital camera for image acquisition and a Matlab procedure for post-processing the acquired images. Experimental data are here obtained for the case of an unbaffled stirred tank. Stable tor…
Modeling and simulation of a digital control design approach for power supply systems
2006
Electronic designers need to model and simulate system features as close as possible to its effective behaviour. Moreover, today, electronics systems are often composed of mixed analog and digital components. The increasing complexity has led to the use of different simulation softwares, each one specific for a particular level of abstraction: mathematical, circuital, behavioural, etc. In order to simulate the entire system these softwares should work together: co-simulation is necessary for digitally controlled power electronics systems. In this paper, the modeling of a digitally controlled switching power supply system using MATLAB/Simulink, ALDEC Active-HDL and Powersys PSIM is presented…
