La observación de aula como herramienta de desarrollo profesional: el caso del OCDE Global Teaching InSights

Se presenta el proyecto Global Teaching InSights Video Study, de la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económicos [OCDE], cuyo objetivo es potenciar la grabación y el análisis de sesiones de clases como herramienta de desarrollo profesional y de formación de docentes de matemáticas. Se describe el trabajo llevado a cabo por los autores coordinando grupos de trabajo que se encargaron de diseñar un estudio de caso basado en un vídeo de una clase real. La difusión pública de los vídeos producidos permite, además, abordar el diseño de investigaciones centradas en observación guiada de la práctica de la enseñanza de las matemáticas.

Mathematical skills in undergraduate students. A ten-year survey of a Plant Physiology course

In the health and life sciences, as well as in other scientific disciplines, problem solving depends on mathematical skills. However, significant deficiencies are commonly found in this regard in undergraduate students. In an attempt to understand the underlying causes and to improve students' performance, this paper reports a ten-year survey (2000-2010) on mathematical skills of undergraduate Spanish students enrolled in a Plant Physiology course, based on data from tests performed throughout this time period. Mathematical literacy in Plant Physiology undergraduates: results of interventions aimed at improving students' performance

The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. AbstractCreating and developing mathematical models to solve real-world problems is a complex task and students often have difficulties in tackling it successfully. The design and implementation of sequences that help students autonomously develop their ability to solve modelling tasks could be a useful scaffolding tool to foster modelling learning. This work describes how the combination of the mistakes committed by a group of pre-service teachers when solving a Fermi problem, with the representation of the temporal analysis of their resolutions, can offer more in-depth information about their conceptual misconceptions regarding mathematical and modelling concepts. The combined representation allows knowing when mistakes occur and provides a powerful tool for instructors to adapt the teaching–learning processes of mathematics at all levels of education.
