Integration of PCL and PLA in a monolithic porous scaffold for interface tissue engineering.

2016

A novel bi-layered multiphasic scaffold (BLS) have been fabricated for the first time by combining melt mixing, compression molding and particulate leaching. One layer has been composed by polylactic acid (PLA) presenting pore size in the range of 90-110µm while the other layer has been made of polycaprolactone (PCL) with pores ranging from 5 to 40µm. The different chemo-physical properties of the two biopolymers combined with the tunable pore architecture permitted to realize monolithic functionally graded scaffolds engineered to be potentially used for interface tissues regenerations. BLS have been characterized from a morphological and a mechanical point of view. In particular, mechanica…

Preparation and characterization of PLLA-HA scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

2013

In this work, the possibility to produce composite - Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and Hydroxyapatite (HA) - porous scaffolds via Thermally Induced Phase Separation for bone tissue engineering applications was investigated. Several PLLA/HA ratios were tested (70/30, 50/50, 30/70 and 20/80 wt/wt) and the as-obtained scaffolds were characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction (WAXD) and compression test. The results showed that the presence of HA does not influence the phase separation process. Morphological analysis revealed an open structure with interconnected pores and HA embedded in the polymer matrix. This evidence was confirmed by WAXD analysis; where …

Reuse and recycling in construction: novel photocatalytic nano-mortars from valorised industrial wastes

2021

Production of novel eco-composite nano-mortars for architectural finishing, designed to combat environmental pollution affecting building shells, is reported. Specimens consist of a natural hydraulic lime mortar matrix doped with various kinds of nanophotocatalysts, produced from valorized industrial wastes: TiO2-hexaferrite from Fe3O2, and Ti(SO4)2-hydroxyapatite from Atlantic codfish bones. Samples were characterized and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated. Analysis showed that industrial wastes may be usefully reused to produce a new generation of sustainable, cheap and multifunctional novel building materials.

The Effects of Structure on the One Dimensional Compression Behaviour of a Porous Calcarenite

2019

Human settlements built on weak rock deposits are often characterized by instabilities or collapse that may involve the underground cavities and consequently the above buildings. Underground calcarenite quarries in Marsala have been involved in a number of collapses that have seriously damaged numerous buildings. Unfortunately proper engineering solutions have not yet been identified according to the different and special cases and to the properties of this structured material. In order to investigate structure effects on the behaviour of the porous calcarenite of Marsala, this paper presents a comparison between the one dimensional compression behaviour of the intact rock and of the same w…

MATERIALI INNOVATIVI - LEGNO+ BASALTO, PER GRANDI LUCI

2010
