Things matter: about materiality and recovery from mental health difficulties
2020
ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of this study is to explore how material things might become involved in the recovery process of people with mental health difficulties. Method Empirical material from three different studies on various aspects concerning mental health issues that each of the authors had conducted was reanalysed through a phenomenological item analysis. Results We discovered that mundane objects such as a mobile phone, a bench, a door and a key have agency to contribute to peoples’ recovery and wellbeing. Things became agents that created contexts that initiated physical, social and emotional movements. Conclusion By giving attention to materiality we might become aware of the impor…
Important thoughts on images and words
2015
Both images and words have their unique materiality that tends to be forgotten or bypassed in our modern times and perhaps in particular in our technology-driven contemporary culture. This oblivion...
Disease and Anti-Naturalism in Raymond Carver's “Fat” and “A Small, Good Thing” and David Lynch's Blue Velvet
2005
International audience; This paper does not explore possible references to Carver in Lynch's films, but offers a comparative study of their representations of disease. Based primarily on a play between metonymy and metaphor, this aesthetic of contamination contributes to a critical discourse on naturalist thought. The first form of “anti-naturalism” is the deconstruction of what calls Charles Taylor “disengaged reason.” The second form is the questioning of the very “idea of nature.” These artists adopt what Clément Rosset calls an “artificialist” standpoint, the subject and the body being shaped, as Michel Foucault and Judith Butler would have it, by normative discourses and techniques. Co…
Il corpo delle regine
2022
2018
In recent years, the development of additive construction methods for the production of physical models starting from computerized ones has led to a return from the digital domain to the material one. A new "digital materiality" associated with 3D printing makes it possible to extend the imaginary of the contemporary architectural scene by consolidating the strong relationship between research and innovation. 3D printing is a rapid prototyping technique that allows the direct transposition of the digital model into its analogous material using a computer controlled nozzle to deposit small doses of material and compose the figure in space.
The Shape of Energy. Fuels and Modernity in the Italian Industrial Imagery of the 1950s
2022
The subject of this essay is a type of artifact that has had in the past, still has and will h…
Structure and form. Changes of state in architecture – from modern to contemporary
2016
The relationship between the terms Structure and Form, while expressing a consideration on the tectonic component of composition, registers a cyclical evolution of the archi-tecture of the building. The solidity of the Modern, the liquidity of "post-modern conditions", the evaporation of the contemporary aesthetics of disappearance outline a return to a solid state of the matter outlining the basic assumption of formal research in architecture in the sculptural mass of the building.
Flows of information and meaning: a vocabulary approach to integrated thinking and reporting
2020
PurposeIntegrated reporting (IR) is increasingly becoming a practice useful not only for accountability but also for managerial purposes because of its potential role as a signifying practice for integrated thinking (IT). In this perspective, this paper aims to explore which of the objects that are represented in integrated reports provide materiality and common understanding to the concept of IT for its effective implementation within organizations.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on a vocabulary approach for interpreting the texts of integrated reports as systems of words that are able to provide meaning for a common understanding of the concept of IT. In particular, by focu…
Children's exploration of the concepts of home and belonging: Capturing views from five European countries.
2021
Understanding one's sense of belonging is a central part of identity formation and self-awareness; feeling safe somewhere, with specific people is identified as a basic human need. This paper explores the ideas of children from three age groups in five different European as they discussed the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’. Findings showed that the children's ideas could be organised into six interrelated aspects: Spatiality, Materiality, Multiplicity, Social Relations, Affect, and Dislocation. Whilst there were differences in the ways that the children conceptualised home across the classes, even the youngest children were able to describe their ideas using metaphors and abstract conce…
