Correlation analysis of vibration modes in physical vapour deposited Bi 2 Se 3 thin films probed by the Raman mapping technique
2021
In this work, the Raman spectroscopy mapping technique is used for the analysis of mechanical strain in Bi2Se3 thin films of various (3-400 nm) thicknesses synthesized by physical vapour deposition on amorphous quartz and single-layer graphene substrates. The evaluation of strain effects is based on the correlation analysis of in-plane (E2g) and out-of-plane (A21g) Raman mode positions. For Bi2Se3 films deposited on quartz, experimental datapoints are scattered along the line with a slope of similar to 0.85, related to the distribution of hydrostatic strain. In contrast to quartz/Bi2Se3 samples, for graphene/Bi2Se3 heterostructures with the same thicknesses, an additional negative slope of …

A probabilistic model of the tensile strength of a UD flax-fabric-reinforced polymer composite
2016
In order to fully realize the efficiency of bast fibers or their yarns as reinforcement of polymer composites, they should be aligned. Tensile strength of such composites in the direction of reinforcement has been found to exhibit size effect commensurable with that of unidirectionally reinforced (UD) composites with inorganic fibers, necessitating a probabilistic modeling approach. Strength distribution of a polymer matrix composite reinforced with aligned twisted bast fiber yarns is considered allowing for the strength scatter of elementary fibers, the presence of defects in the form of adjacent fiber breaks, and twist of the yarns. The model is applied to predicting the strength of flax/…

Confinement-induced polymorphism in acetylsalicylic acid–nanoporous glass composites
2018
We report on the experimental observation of confinement-induced new phase appearance in acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)–porous glass (PG) composites. In this study, ASA was embedded in PG host matrices of various pore widths (15–200 nm). The Raman spectra and positron annihilation lifetime measurements exhibit the existence of ASA nanocrystals in the PG matrix. The DSC data revealed that the melting temperature TM and excess specific heat decrease with decreasing the size of embedded ASA nanocrystals. The close inspection of the TM dependence versus diameter of filled pores has shown that the ASA crystallizes in polymorph II in confined matrix. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the ASA spatial…
Theoretical and experimental developments in quantum spin liquid in geometrically frustrated magnets: a review
2019
The exotic substances have exotic properties. One class of such substances is geometrically frustrated magnets, where correlated spins reside in the sites of triangular or kagome lattice. In some cases, such magnet would not have long-range magnetic order. Rather, its spins tend to form kind of pairs, called valence bonds. At $$T \rightarrow 0$$ these highly entangled quantum objects condense in the form of a liquid, called quantum spin liquid (QSL). The observation of a gapless QSL in actual materials is of fundamental significance both theoretically and technologically, as it could open a path to creation of topologically protected states for quantum information processing and computation…
Structural Stability of Hafnia-Based Materials at Ultra-High Temperature
2018
This study assesses the structural stability at ultra-high temperature of the following selected compositions: 6.5 and 14 mol. % of RE2O3 (RE = Dy, Y, Er, Yb, and Lu) doped HfO2. Under thermal cycling and thermal shock, the structural stability was evaluated at 2400°C with water vapor flux using a specific test bench with a 3 kW CO2 laser. The cubic phase stability, which is theoretically important in the broad temperature range from 25 to 2800°C, was determined by a quantitative analysis of the X-ray diffractograms. Fully and partially stabilized HfO2, obtained respectively with 14 mol. % and 6.5 mol. % of dopants, showed different behaviors to thermal damage. Thermal expansion was measure…
7.22 Health Monitoring of High Performance Composite Pressure Vessels
2018
The most important form of damage in carbon fiber reinforced composite pressure vessels is the failure of the fibers however the rate of fiber failure is controlled by the viscoelastic nature of the matrix, which determines overall in-service lifetimes. This type of damage is very different from that encountered with metal pressure vessels and requires a detailed understanding in order to ensure reliability. Innovative proof testing methods based on these processes are necessary. The damage processes and the means of quantifying them are discussed. Their reliability under pressure over periods of decades is analyzed. Intrinsic safety factors linked directly to the properties of the composit…
Spark Plasma Sintering tool design for preparing alumina-based Functionally Graded Materials
2016
Abstract A way to produce Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) is by means of Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and specifically designated tools. These new tools permit a current density modulation and therefore a temperature variation along the z-axis. The key feature relies on a varying die section. FEM modelling has given the suitable range of die dimensions between the top and the bottom to obtain a given temperature gradient (around 300 °C) out of roughly a 15 mm height. Experiments conducted in different configurations (with or without samples) and the measurement of the associated thermal gradient led to improvements of the mould (in particular the introduction of a counter-piston). By th…
