Sensitivity analysis and uncertainty assessment of a SMBR model

2008

Over the last decade new technologies are emerging even more for wastewater treatment. Among the new technologies, a recent possible solution regards membrane bioreactors (MBRs) that represent a promising alternative to conventional processes. Nowadays, the recurrence to mathematical models as reliable tools in planning as well as management issues is of growing interest in Wastewater Treatment Plants field. Regarding MBR modelling, due to the intrinsic complexity and uncertainty in some processes, basic models that can provide a holistic understanding of the technology at a fundamental level are of great necessity. Many mathematical models have been developed for modelling the MBR which ba…

A QUANTITY-QUALITY MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL: MODEL CALIBRATION AND SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS

2015

Landfill leachate represents nowadays one of the most important issue related to the waste management cycle. Knowledge about leachate distribution and transport as well as fate of pollutants is fundamental for understanding the behavior of the landfill reactor. In the present study, a simple 1-D mathematical model was developed for the simulation of the vertical leachate fluxes throughout a landfill for MSW as well as the fate of inorganic pollutants within the landfill leachate pathway. The model was based on mass balance equations, which allowed to evaluate the moisture accumulation inside the landfill body as well as contaminant transport processes. The model enables to calculate the moi…

Petri Net Modelling of the Starch Enzymatic Liquefaction

2012

This paper investigates the use of the Petri Net modelling language for the description and analysis of the enzymatic reactions that are used for the starch liquefaction. The Coloured Petri Net formalism supported by the CPN Tools modelling and simulation environment is used. The pools of substrates and products are represented as the places and the possible reactions as the transition of the net. The concurrent reactions are modelled trough transitions that are enabled at the same time. The occurrence probabilities associated with each of these concurrent transitions are chosen as the model parameters. The analysis of the specific properties of the model is used to fit the model to data fr…

A new dynamic identification technique: application to the evaluation of the equivalent strut for infilled frames

2003

A new time domain identification technique for systems under Gaussian white noise input is presented, requiring for its application the measurement of the system response but no information about input intensity. The technique proposed is based on the statistic moment equations derived by using a special class of mathematical models named "potential models". These models allow one to determine fundamental properties of the response statistics, making it possible to identify stiffness and dissipation features of a structural system, and also to determine the excitation input. The technique proposed is here applied to the identification of the strut equivalent to the infill of a single story-…

AN ANALYTICAL SOLUTION OF KINEMATIC WAVE EQUATIONS FOR OVERLAND FLOW UNDER GREEN-AMPT INFILTRATION

2010

This paper deals with the analytical solution of kinematic wave equations for overland flow occurring in an infiltrating hillslope. The infiltration process is described by the Green-Ampt model. The solution is derived only for the case of an intermediate flow regime between laminar and turbulent ones. A transitional regime can be considered a reliable flow condition when, to the laminar overland flow, is also associated the effect of the additional resistance due to raindrop impact. With reference to the simple case of an impervious hillslope, a comparison was carried out between the present solution and the non-linear storage model. Some applications of the present solution were performed…

A Friendly-Biological Reactor SIMulator (BioReSIM) for studying biological processes in wastewater treatment processes

2014

Biological processes for wastewater treatments are inherently dynamic systems because of the large variations in the influent wastewater flow rate, concentration composition and the adaptive behavior of the involved microorganisms. Moreover, the sludge retention time (SRT) is a critical factor to understand the bioreactor performances when changes in the influent or in the operation conditions take place. Since SRT are usually in the range of 10-30 days, the performance of biological reactors needs a long time to be monitored in a regular laboratory demonstration, limiting the knowledge that can be obtained in the experimental lab practice. In order to overcome this lack, mathematical model…

Determination of Torsional Stresses in Shafts: From Physical Analogies to Mathematical Models

2015

This paper presents the historical development of methods used for the study of torsional stresses in shafts. In particular, the paper covers both analog methods, especially those based on electrical analogies proposed circa 1925, and numerical methods, especially finite difference methods (FDM), finite element methods (FEM) and boundary element methods (BEM).

Mathematical models and their solutions for different heat exchange processes in environment with layered structure

2012
