Nonlinear σ -models in the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity

2020

In this paper we consider two different nonlinear $\sigma$-models minimally coupled to Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. We show that the resultant geometries represent minimal modifications with respect to those found in GR, though with important physical consequences. In particular, wormhole structures always arise, though this does not guarantee by itself the geodesic completeness of those space-times. In one of the models, quadratic in the canonical kinetic term, we identify a subset of solutions which are regular everywhere and are geodesically complete. We discuss characteristic features of these solutions and their dependence on the relationship between mass and global charge.

On the Possibility of Quantum Gravity Effects at Astrophysical Scales

2007

The nonperturbative renormalization group flow of Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is reviewed. It is argued that at large distances there could be strong renormalization effects, including a scale dependence of Newton's constant, which mimic the presence of dark matter at galactic and cosmological scales.

ON QUANTUM GRAVITY, ASYMPTOTIC SAFETY AND PARAMAGNETIC DOMINANCE

2012

We discuss the conceptual ideas underlying the Asymptotic Safety approach to the nonperturbative renormalization of gravity. By now numerous functional renormalization group studies predict the existence of a suitable nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point. We use an analogy to elementary magnetic systems to uncover the physical mechanism behind the emergence of this fixed point. It is seen to result from the dominance of certain paramagnetic-type interactions over diamagnetic ones. Furthermore, the spacetimes of Quantum Einstein Gravity behave like a polarizable medium with a "paramagnetic" response to external perturbations. Similarities with the vacuum state of Yang-Mills theory are pointed …

Quantum deformation of the Poincare supergroup and kappa -deformed superspace

1994

The classical $r$-matrix for $N=1$ superPoincar{\'e} algebra, given by Lukierski, Nowicki and Sobczyk is used to describe the graded Poisson structure on the $N=1$ Poincar{\'e} supergroup. The standard correspondence principle between the even (odd) Poisson brackets and (anti)commutators leads to the consistent quantum deformation of the superPoincar{\'e} group with the deformation parameter $q$ described by fundamental mass parameter $\kappa \quad (\kappa^{-1}=\ln{q})$. The $\kappa$-deformation of $N=1$ superspace as dual to the $\kappa$-deformed supersymmetry algebra is discussed.

Tracing symmetries and their breakdown through phases of heterotic (2,2) compactifications

2015

We are considering the class of heterotic $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with 9 fields corresponding to $A_1^9$ Gepner models. We classify all of its Abelian discrete quotients and obtain 152 inequivalent models closed under mirror symmetry with $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and $4$ supersymmetry in 4D. We compute the full massless matter spectrum at the Fermat locus and find a universal relation satisfied by all models. In addition we give prescriptions of how to compute all quantum numbers of the 4D states including their discrete R-symmetries. Using mirror symmetry of rigid geometries we describe orbifold and smooth Calabi-Yau phases as deformations away from the Landau-Ginzburg Ferma…

Factorization at Subleading Power, Sudakov Resummation and Endpoint Divergences in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

2020

Starting from the first renormalized factorization theorem for a process described at subleading power in soft-collinear effective theory, we discuss the resummation of Sudakov logarithms for such processes in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory. Endpoint divergences in convolution integrals, which arise generically beyond leading power, are regularized and removed by systematically rearranging the factorization formula. We study in detail the example of the $b$-quark induced $h\to\gamma\gamma$ decay of the Higgs boson, for which we resum large logarithms of the ratio $M_h/m_b$ at next-to-leading logarithmic order. We also briefly discuss the related $gg\to h$ amplitude.

Spacetime correlators of perturbations in slow-roll de Sitter inflation

2014

Two-point correlators and self-correlators of primordial perturbations in quasi-de Sitter spacetime backgrounds are considered. For large separations two-point correlators exhibit nearly scale invariance, while for short distances self-correlators need standard renormalization. We study the deformation of two-point correlators to smoothly match the self-correlators at coincidence. The corresponding angular power spectrum is evaluated in the Sachs-Wolfe regime of low multipoles. Scale invariance is maintained, but the amplitude of $C_{\ell}$ could change in a non-trivial way.

Normalization of Killing vectors and energy conservation in two-dimensional gravity

1999

We explicitly show that, in the context of a recently proposed 2D dilaton gravity theory, energy conservation requires the ``natural'' Killing vector to have, asymptotically, an unusual normalization. The Hawking temperature $T_H$ is then calculated according to this prescription.
