Development of math anxiety and its longitudinal relationships with arithmetic achievement among primary school children
2019
Abstract The aim of this study is to examine the development of two separable aspects of math anxiety, anxiety about math-related situations and anxiety about failure in math, and their cross-lagged relationship with arithmetic achievement. The mean level of anxiety about math-related situations decreased among second, third, and fourth graders, and the level of anxiety about failure in math declined among third, fourth, and fifth graders. The rank-order of individuals was more stable in arithmetic achievement than in either aspect of math anxiety. Arithmetic achievement predicted later anxiety about failure in math, but neither aspect of math anxiety predicted later achievement. The result…
The skill of abstracting and concretizing as a det erminant of teacher’s competences in the sphere of forming mathematical notions in pupils of young…
2013
The person who shapes children’s attitudes towards the given subject and their manners of functioning within the mathematical space is the teacher of early education. Therefore, the latter should display a high standard of mathematical culture, as well as hold mathematical competences on a suitable level. Abstracting and concretizing are among the most important cognitive processes which are indispensable to form and develop mathematical notions. The paper is an attempt at answering the question whether prospective teachers of integrated education possess this vital-from the point of view of didactics-skill.
Literacy skills, mathematical skills and educational expectations among Finnish adolescents
2013
This study investigated the connection between educational expectations and skills in spelling, reading fluency and mathematics among Finnish 9th Graders. Connection between comorbidity of reading disability and mathematical disability with educational expectations was also examined. These connections were explored among boys and girls and the effects of parental education were assessed, as well. Cross tabulations and analyses of variance were used as tools for analyses. Spelling, reading fluency and mathematics were connected to educational expectations, with higher skills leading to higher expectations. The largest difference between the educational expectation groups was in mathematics. …

PROBLEM ITEMS OF FINANCIAL LITERACY ASSESMENT FOR STUDENTS IN LATVIA
2020
Considering the financial situation in Latvia it is very important not only to realize how effectively students could deal with situations relating to financial issues, but to understand what kind of PISA Financial items exactly bring difficulties. It is necessary to realize how to improve students’ financial literacy. The main of the research is to find out what kind of PISA 2018 financial items are difficult for students and which students’ answers are marked as incorrect. To reach the aim the methods of content analysis. The research data show that students are very good at dealing with tasks similar to their everyday situations and requiring mathematical skills. In their turn, tasks rel…
Matemaattisten taitojen kehitys kouluiässä
2018
Matemaattisten taitojen kehitys on luonteeltaan kasaantuvaa: aikaisempi osaaminen helpottaa uuden oppimista ja tasoerot matematiikan taidoissa lasten välillä kasvavat koulunkäynnin edetessä. Matematiikan osalta alkuopetus näyttäisikin hyödyttävän eniten taidoiltaan edistyneimpiä lapsia – taitotasoltaan heikommat lapset jäävät samalla jälkeen. Kehityskulkuun vaikuttavat monet erilaiset tekijät, joista yksi keskeisimmistä on lukujen luettelun sujuvuus ennen kouluikää.

2017
Teaching Early Mathematical Skills to 3- to 7-Year-Old Children — Differences Related to Mathematical Skill Category, Children’s Age Group and Teache…
2022
Abstract This study explored teaching early mathematical skills to 3- to 7-year-old children in early childhood education and care (ECEC) and pre-primary education. Teachers in ECEC (N = 206) answered a web survey. The first aim was to determine whether teaching frequency or pedagogical awareness of teaching early mathematical skills varied according to the category of skills (numerical skills, spatial thinking skills and mathematical thinking and reasoning skills) and whether children’s age group moderated these differences. The second aim was to explore to what extent teacher-related characteristics and children’s age group explained variations in teaching frequency concerning early mathe…
The development of Early Mathematical Skills – A Theoretical Framework for a Holistic Model
2019
This article presents a theoretical framework for a holistic model of the development of early mathematical skills in early childhood education. The first aim of this study was to conduct a comprehensive international review of the literature to explore early mathematical skills categories. The literature review yielded three early mathematical skills categories, namely (1) numerical skills, (2) spatial thinking skills and (3) mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. Previous studies have shown that several mathematical skills develop gradually and simultaneously in early ages and that these skills areas are interconnected in mathematical skills learning. Accordingly, the second aim of t…
