Towards human exploration of space: the THESEUS review series on cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal research priorities

2016

International audience; The THESEUS project (Towards Human Exploration of Space: aEUropean Strategy) was initiated within the seventh FrameworkProgramme by the European Commission. This project aimed toprovide a cross-cutting, life science-based roadmap for Europe’sstrategy towards human exploration of space, especially for deepspace missions and its relevance to applications on Earth. Toaddress these challenges, relevance of space research on thecardiovascular system, the lungs and kidneys, was discussed in anexpert group and its principal conclusions will be presented in thisarticle.

New client puzzle approach for DoS resistance in ad hoc Networks

2010

In this paper we propose a new client puzzle approach to prevent Denial of Service (DoS) attacks in ad hoc networks. Each node in the network first solves a computational problem and with the solution has to create and solve a client puzzle. By combining computational problems with puzzles, we improve the efficiency and latency of the communicating nodes and resistance in DoS attacks. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach.

$PT$-symmetric graphene under a magnetic field

2016

We propose a $PT$-symmetrically deformed version of the graphene tight-binding model under a magnetic field. We analyze the structure of the spectra and the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians around the $K$ and $K'$ points, both in the $PT$-symmetric and $PT$-broken regions. In particular we show that the presence of the deformation parameter $V$ produces several interesting consequences, including the asymmetry of the zero-energy states of the Hamiltonians and the breakdown of the completeness of the eigenvector sets. We also discuss the biorthogonality of the eigenvectors, which {turns out to be} different in the $PT$-symmetric and $PT$-broken regions.

MATHEMATICS IN THE CONTEXT OF FUZZY SETS: BASIC IDEAS, CONCEPTS, AND SOME REMARKS ON THE HISTORY AND RECENT TRENDS OF DEVELOPMENT

2011

The main aim of this paper is to discuss the basic ideas and concepts of the so called ‘Fuzzy Mathematics’ and to give a brief survey of the history and of some trends in recent development of mathematics and its applications in the context of fuzzy sets. As a potential reader we imagine a mathematician, who is not working in the field of ‘fuzzy mathematics’, but wishes to have some idea about this vast field in modern science.

Platonism, intuition and the nature of mathematics

1988

Platonism is an essential aspect of mathematical method. Mathematicians are learned ability " t o   l i v e " in the "world" of mathematical concepts. Here we have the main source of the creative power of mathematics, and of its surprising efficiency in natural sciences and technique. In this way, "living" (sometimes - for many years) in the "world"of their concepts and models, mathematicians are learned to draw a maximum of conclusions from a minimum of premises. Fixed system of basic principles is the distinguishing property of every mathematical theory. Mathematical model of some natural process or technical device is essentially a  f i x e d  m o d e l  which can be investigated indepen…
