Early root surface colonization by human periodontal ligament fibroblasts following treatment with different biomaterials

2013

The present in-vitro study examined the effects of different biomaterials on early root surface colonization by human periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts using confocal-laser-scanning-microscopy (CLSM).Fifteen periodontally-diseased teeth were extracted, treated with scaling/root planing and longitudinally cut to obtain 30 root fragments. Fragments were treated either with 24% EDTA following application of enamel matrix derivative (EMD), 24% EDTA or EMD only, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (NHA) paste or oily calcium hydroxide suspension (OCHS) for 1 h each. The analogue untreated root specimens served as controls. Root fragments were incubated with human PDL fibroblasts and cellular pro…

False metamorphic events inferred from misinterpretation of microstructural evidence and P–T data

2008

Geometrical relationships involving inclusions and partial inclusions in metamorphic microstructures can be inadequate for inferring an order of crystallization and hence a metamorphic reaction. Unique spatial and ⁄ or chemical relationships need to be defined for mineral inclusions, in the context of a reference paragenesis, commonly the matrix assemblage. Corona microstructures are reliable indicators of metamorphic reactions, but require considerable care when used to infer reactions or changes in P- T conditions, owing to kinetic problems, as well as to changes in the effective reaction volume during changes across relatively broad P-T stability fields of assemblages. Mineral equilibria…

Bioactive glass ions as strong enhancers of osteogenic differentiation in human adipose stem cells.

2015

Bioactive glasses are known for their ability to induce osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. To elucidate the mechanism of the osteoinductivity in more detail, we studied whether ionic extracts prepared from a commercial glass S53P4 and from three experimental glasses (2-06, 1-06 and 3-06) are alone sufficient to induce osteogenic differentiation of human adipose stem cells. Cells were cultured using basic medium or osteogenic medium as extract basis. Our results indicate that cells stay viable in all the glass extracts for the whole culturing period, 14 days. At 14 days the mineralization in osteogenic medium extracts was excessive compared to the control. Parallel to the increased mi…

Radial cracks around inclusions: A program to calculate P-T paths with respect to elastic properties of minerals

1994

Abstract Radial cracking around inclusions in a matrix originated by their differential elastic behavior allows the development of a new method for reconstructing the evolution of P-T paths during metamorphism. The appearance of radial cracking is a function of the variation of the elastic parameters between the matrix and inclusion, the initial P-T conditions of inclusion entrapment and the component of isothermal decompression characteristic for a retrograde path. The program RADCRA is written in FORTRAN 77 and presents a general form to calculate the different P-T evolutions for a matrix and an inclusion during metamorphism. Necessary input data are the elastic properties of each mineral…

Silence of Binary Kerr Black Holes

2020

A nontrivial S matrix generally implies a production of entanglement: starting with an incoming pure state, the scattering generally returns an outgoing state with nonvanishing entanglement entropy. It is then interesting to ask if there exists a nontrivial S matrix that generates no entanglement. In this Letter, we argue that the answer is the S-matrix for the scattering of classical black holes. We study the spin entanglement in the scattering of arbitrary spinning particles. Augmenting the S-matrix with Thomas–Wigner rotation factors, we derive the entanglement entropy from the gravitational induced 2→2 amplitude. In the Eikonal limit, we find that the relative entanglement entropy, defi…

Effects of a high-fat diet on energy metabolism and ROS production in rat liver.

2011

International audience; BACKGROUND & AIMS: A high-fat diet affects liver metabolism, leading to steatosis, a complex disorder related to insulin resistance and mitochondrial alterations. Steatosis is still poorly understood since diverse effects have been reported, depending on the different experimental models used. METHODS: We hereby report the effects of an 8 week high-fat diet on liver energy metabolism in a rat model, investigated in both isolated mitochondria and hepatocytes. RESULTS: Liver mass was unchanged but lipid content and composition were markedly affected. State-3 mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation was inhibited, contrasting with unaffected cytochrome content. Oxidative…

Bioinspired Metal-Organic Frameworks in Mixed Matrix Membranes for Efficient Static/Dynamic Removal of Mercury from Water

2020

The mercury removal efficiency of a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) derived from the amino acid S-methyl-L-cysteine is presented and the process is characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A feasibility study is further presented on the performance of this MOF and also that of another MOF derived from the amino acid L-methionine when used as the sorbent in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). These MOF-based MMMs exhibit high efficiency and selectivity in both static and dynamic regimes in the removal of Hg2+ from aqueous environments, due to the high density of thioalkyl groups decorating MOF channels. Both MMMs are capable to reduce different concentration of the pollutant to …

Mixed-model of ANOVA for measurement reproducibility in proteomics

2009

This work is a statistical analysis of reproducibility of a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry experiment. Its aim is to evaluate measurement variability and compare peak intensities from two types of MALDI-TOF platforms. We compared and commented on the abilities of Principal Component Analysis and mixed-model analysis of variance to evaluate the biological variability and the technical variability of peak intensities in different patients. The properties and hypotheses of both methods are summarized and applied to spectra from plasma of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. Principal Component Analysis checks rapidly the balance between the two variabilities; however, a mixed-model analysis of varianc…

Extended Horizon Adaptive Model Algorithmic Control

1997

Abstract A new, original, robust adaptive control strategy termed Extended Horizon Adaptive Model Algorithmic Control is presented. In EHAMAC, a new, combined, ’single-loop’/’cascade’ adaptive least-squares parameter estimator is coupled with a new, simple but powerful Extended Horizon Model Algorithmic Control so that open-loop stable non-minimum phase systems can be effectively controlled in the time-varying environment. In the new, cascade structure of the ALS estimator, the covariance windup and blowup are totally eliminated. Moreover, the sacramental square-root update of the covariance matrix is no longer needed On the other hand, employing EHMAC facilitates robustness design so that …

This paper deals with the problem of robust model predictive control (RMPC) for a class of linear time-varying systems with constraints and data losses. We take the polytopic uncertainties into account to describe the uncertain systems. First, we design a robust state observer by using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints so that the original system state can be tracked. Second, the MPC gain is calculated by minimizing the upper bound of infinite horizon robust performance objective in terms of linear matrix inequality conditions. The method of robust MPC and state observer design is illustrated by a numerical example.
