Nonparametric clustering of seismic events
2006
In this paper we propose a clustering technique, based on the maximization of the likelihood function defined from the generalization of a model for seismic activity (ETAS model, (Ogata (1988))), iteratively changing the partitioning of the events. In this context it is useful to apply models requiring the distinction between independent events (i.e. the background seismicity) and strongly correlated ones. This technique develops nonparametric estimation methods of the point process intensity function. To evaluate the goodness of fit of the model, from which the clustering method is implemented, residuals process analysis is used.
On a class of generalised Schmidt groups
2015
In this paper families of non-nilpotent subgroups covering the non-nilpotent part of a finite group are considered. An A 5 -free group possessing one of these families is soluble, and soluble groups with this property have Fitting length at most three. A bound on the number of primes dividing the order of the group is also obtained.
Oxidative stress tolerance, adenylate cyclase, and autophagy are key players in the chronological life span of Saccharomyces cerevisiae during winema…
2012
Most grape juice fermentation takes place when yeast cells are in a nondividing state called the stationary phase. Under such circumstances, we aimed to identify the genetic determinants controlling longevity, known as the chronological life span. We identified commercial strains with both short (EC1118) and long (CSM) life spans in laboratory growth medium and compared them under diverse conditions. Strain CSM shows better tolerance to stresses, including oxidative stress, in the stationary phase. This is reflected during winemaking, when this strain has an increased maximum life span. Compared to EC1118, CSM overexpresses a mitochondrial rhodanese gene-like gene, RDL2, whose deletion lead…
Influence of fat mass for the VO2max and ventilatory thresholds in young athletes of endurance sport specialties
2016
Correlation at Low Temperature: II. Asymptotics
2004
The present paper is a continuation of ref. 4, where the truncated two-point correlation function for a class of lattice spin systems was proved to have exponential decay at low temperature, under a weak coupling assumption. In this paper we compute the asymptotics of the correlation function as the temperature goes to zero. This paper thus extends ref. 3 in two directions: The Hamiltonian function is allowed to have several local minima other than a unique global minimum, and we do not require translation invariance of the Hamiltonian function. We are in particular able to handle spin systems on a general lattice.
Assessment of chronic effects of tebuconazole on survival, reproduction and growth of Daphnia magna after different exposure times
2015
The effect of the fungicide tebuconazole (0.41, 0.52, 0.71 and 1.14mg/L) on survival, reproduction and growth of Daphnia magna organisms was monitored using 14 and 21 days exposure tests. A third experiment was performed by exposing D. magna to the fungicide for 14 days followed by 7 days of recovery (14+7). In order to test fungicide effects on D. magna, parameters as survival, mean whole body length, mean total number of neonates per female, mean number of broods per female, mean brood size per female, time to first brood/reproduction and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) were used. Reproduction was seriously affected by tebuconazole. All tebuconazole concentrations tested affected t…
Effects of tetradifon on Daphnia magna during chronic exposure and alterations in the toxicity to generations pre-exposed to the pesticide.
2000
Daphnia magna was exposed to some nominal sublethal tetradifon concentrations (0.10, 0.18, 0.22 and 0.44 mg/l) during 21 days. Chronic toxicity tests were carried out using neonates of F(1) first brood (F(1)-1st) and F(1) third brood (F(1)-3rd) offspring generations from parentals (F(0)) pre-exposed to the pesticide. The effect of tetradifon on survival, reproduction and growth was monitored for the selected daphnid generations. The parameters used to evaluate pesticide effect on reproduction were: mean total young per female, mean brood size, time to first reproduction, mean number broods per female and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r). Survival and growth (body length) were also det…
Association of cardio-pulmonary stress test parameters and heart rate recovery in obese subjects with or without type II diabetes
2016
Background and Objectives: Heart rate recovery at first (HRR-I) and second (HRR-II) minute after exercise is accurate in estimating autonomic nervous system balance, and has been related to risk of cardiovascular events. Our aim was to determine independent predictors of HRR collected during standard cardio-pulmonary stress test (CPT) in a group of overweight/obese subjects without (N=14) and with type 2 diabetes (N=19), as compared to a sample (N=15) of healthy sedentary subjects. Methods: A graded exercise test on treadmill was performed. Oxygen uptake at rest and at peak exercise (VO2max), as well as respiratory exchange ratio at peak exercise was collected. Linear and logistic regressio…
Evaluation of in-farm versus weather station data for use as heat stress indicator in dairy sheep
2005
AbstractHeat stress is a limiting factor in dairy production in hot climates impairing growth, milk production and reproduction. The most widely investigated climatic factors related with heat stress are: air temperature and relative humidity. Previously dairy sheep studies of heat tolerance depended on measurements of physiological functions on individual animals such as rectal temperatures, respiration rates or volumes of air inhaled; unfortunately, such measurements are costly and not feasible on a large scale. This study aims to evaluate in-farm (IF) versus weather station (WS) data to be used as heat stress indicator in dairy sheep. Data were collected in three farms in November 2002 t…
Serrin-Type Overdetermined Problems: an Alternative Proof
2008
We prove the symmetry of solutions to overdetermined problems for a class of fully nonlinear equations, namely the Hessian equations. In the case of the Poisson equation, our proof is alternative to the proofs proposed by Serrin (moving planes) and by Weinberger. Moreover, our proof makes no direct use of the maximum principle while it sheds light on a relation between the Serrin problem and the isoperimetric inequality.
