Testing the use of an image-based technique to measure gully erosion at Sparacia experimental area
2017
The first part of this investigation was aimed at testing the use of a three‐dimensional (3D) digital terrain model and a quasi‐tridimensional (2.5D) digital elevation model obtained by a large series of oblique images of eroded channels taken from consumer un‐calibrated and non‐metric cameras. For two closed earth channels having a different sinuosity, the ground measurement of some cross sections by a profilometer (P) was carried out and their real volume was also measured. The comparison among the three methods (3D, 2.5D, and P) pointed out that a limited underestimation of the total volume always occurs and that the 3D method is characterized by the minimum difference between measured a…
On the variation of the correction factor of surface velocity with the measurement vertical for shallow flows over rough beds
2023
Considering that water flow energy affects the detachment of soil particles, the transport and deposit of the detached particles, the flow velocity is a key variable governing the soil erosion processes at the hillslope scale. The simple dye-tracer technique for measuring mean flow velocity can be applied in non-controlled field applications for which some measurement difficulties (e.g. due to sediment transport, and shallow flows) can occur. The correction factor is usually obtained as the ratio between the mean velocity, deriving from measurements of flow discharge and water depth, and surface velocity. Alternatively, the possibility of using the velocity profile in a given vertical to de…
Life on the edge: Adaptations of Posidonia oceanica to hypersaline conditions in a Mediterranean lagoon system
2023
Hypersaline stress is a major stressor in semi-enclosed coastal lagoons, affecting the distribution and survival of key foundation species. In this study, we investigated how Posidonia oceanica meadows responded physiologically and morphologically to different salinity concentrations both in-situ, across a natural saline gradient occurring inside the lagoon system, and in a mesocosm experiment. Leaf water relations, organic osmolytes, photosynthesis, respiration, Chlorophyll-a fluorescence, pigments content, and leaf growth were studied in P. oceanica from three different sites within the Stagnone of Marsala lagoon, as well as after exposing P. oceanica to a salinity level of 46 psu in a 30…

New examples of specific base catalysis in mononuclear rearrangements of heterocycles found via a designed modification of the side chain structure
2009
To select suitable candidates for the occurrence of specific-base-catalysis in MRH of (Z)-hydrazones of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole we have designed a modification of the side-chain structure by linking a strong electron-withdrawing system to the hydrazono group. Thus we have synthesized the (Z)-semicarbazone (3d), the (Z)-phenylsemicarbazone (3e), and the (Z)-acetylhydrazone (3f) of the above oxadiazole and examined their kinetic behavior in dioxane/water in a large range of proton concentrations (pS + 4.0 14.5). In all the pS+ range examined only a base-catalyzed process has been evidenced (no uncatalysed path occurs). The behavior at the largest pS+ values (the reactivity tends t…
$N$ identical particles and one particle to entangle them all
2017
In quantum information W states are a central class of multipartite entangled states because of their robustness against noise and use in many quantum processes. Their generation however remains a demanding task whose difficulty increases with the number of particles. We report a simple scalable conceptual scheme where a single particle in an ancilla mode works as entanglement catalyst of W state for other $N$ separated identical particles. A crucial novel aspect of the scheme, which exploits basically spatial indistinguishability, is its universality, being applicable without essential changes to both bosons and fermions. Our proposal represents a new paradigm within experimental preparati…
Propagation of precipitation measurement biases into the hydraulic modelling of urban drainage systems: a case study
2021
Precipitation is the primary source of freshwater, while it can have great socio-economical impacts associated with extreme weather events such as floods and droughts. Good quality hydro-meteorological data is an essential condition not only for climate analysis but also for warning systems, hydraulic structures design, risk assessment, etc. In fact, precipitation is one of the most intensively used variables in hydrological modelling and its measurement accuracy is of foremost importance (Peterson et al., 1998). Accurate and timely knowledge of precipitation characteristics at urban and natural basins scales is essential for understanding how different catchment hydrological systems operat…
A Quantum-Inspired Classifier for Early Web Bot Detection
2022
This paper introduces a novel approach, inspired by the principles of Quantum Computing, to address web bot detection in terms of real-time classification of an incoming data stream of HTTP request headers, in order to ensure the shortest decision time with the highest accuracy. The proposed approach exploits the analogy between the intrinsic correlation of two or more particles and the dependence of each HTTP request on the preceding ones. Starting from the a-posteriori probability of each request to belong to a particular class, it is possible to assign a Qubit state representing a combination of the aforementioned probabilities for all available observations of the time series. By levera…
Outdoor Mean Radiant Temperature Estimation: Is the Black-Globe Thermometer Method a Feasible Course of Action?
2018
Urban planning has become one of the crucial action in order to address and mitigate the effect and the consequences of the global warming and it also entails different sectors of the urban context. The survey and control of the outdoor climatic conditions are among the involved sectors and mean radiant temperature is amid the most analyzed parameters. The aim of the paper is to investigate the effective suitability of one of the most used method in the assessment of the mean radiant temperature, namely the globe-thermometer method, in outdoor urban environment, singling out possible shortcomings and actual efficacy. Specifically, data obtained by measurement campaigns performed by means of…
