Electromechanical coupling in anodic niobium oxide: Electric field-induced strain, internal stress, and dielectric response

Seemingly, contradictory results have been reported so far for electrostriction in anodic oxides. Furthermore, no definitive agreement could be obtained with theory. In this paper, in situ techniques are combined to elucidate electrostriction in anodic niobium oxide. The dependence of strain, internal stress, and dielectric constant on the electric field is measured by, respectively, spectroscopic ellipsometry, curvature, and impedance measurements. The through-thickness strain is tensile and proportional to the square of the electric field. Water infiltration measurements under ponding conditions are becoming largely applied techniques for an approximate characterization of crusted soils. In this study, the impact of crusting on soil hydraulic conductivity was assessed in a Mediterranean vineyard (western Sicily, Italy) under conventional tillage. The aim of this work was to analyse the applicability of electrical conductivity sensors for on-line monitoring the start-up period of an anaerobic fixed-bed reactor. The evolution of bicarbonate concentration and methane production rate was analysed. Strong linear relationships between electrical conductivity and both bicarbonate concentration and methane production rate were observed. On-line estimations of the studied parameters were carried out in a new start-up period by applying simple linear regression models, which resulted in a good concordance between both observed and predicted values.
