The chemiluminescence activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells during acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis

1987

The spontaneous chemiluminescence activity (CL-A) of peripheral mononuclear cells (MNC) was examined in Lewis rats with acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), compared to rats immunized with complete adjuvant (n = 11) and healthy animals (n = 16). In rats with EAE, CL-A increased sharply 8-9 days after immunization (3420 +/- 3124 counts/10 s, n = 16) at the time of flattening of the weight curve. This CL-A peak was compared to that of animals immunized with complete adjuvant: 765 +/- 441 counts/10 s (P = 0.01) and healthy rats: 450 +/- 172 counts/10 s (P = 0.0001). After this initial peak in EAE rats, CL-A decreased almost to normal values when animals lost weight (746 +/- 251…

Bone mineral density in relation to anthropometric properties, physical activity and smoking in 75-year-old men and women

1993

Bone mineral content (BMC, gem−2) and density (BMD, gem−3) were studied in 75-year-old men and women in relation to anthropometric and certain life-style factors. This study covered all the men and women born in 1914 who were residents in the city of Jyvaskyla in 1989 (N=388). A hundred and three men and 188 women participated in bone measurements performed at the calcaneus using a 125I-photon absorption method. BMC was on average 36% and BMD 17% higher in the men than in the women. BMC and BMD associated with body mass in both sexes, and with body fat and use of estrogen in the women. There was a negative correlation between the BMD values and the number of cigarettes smoked over the entir…

Calcaneal Bone Mineral Density Predicts Fracture Occurrence: A Five-Year Follow-up Study in Elderly People

1997

A 5-year follow-up study investigated calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) and changes in BMD in relation to fracture occurrence. The subjects comprised two cohorts born in 1914 and 1910 living in the city of Jyväskylä in central Finland. One hundred and three men (82%) and 188 women (73%), aged 75, and 57 men (74%) and 136 women (65%), aged 80, of the eligible population participated in the baseline bone measurements. The follow-up bone measurements were obtained for 59 men (68%) and 119 women (66%), aged 80 years, and for 21 men (53%) and 61 women (48%), aged 85 years. During the follow-up period, 8 men and 36 women from the younger and 11 men and 24 women from the older cohort sustained …

Rheological characterization and release properties of inulin-based hydrogels

2012

Abstract In the present study the rheological properties of hydrogels obtained through UV irradiation of an aqueous solution of methacrylated inulin (INUMA) alone or in the presence of four different crosslinkers, have been recorded as a function of irradiation time, at two different wavelengths (320 and 365 nm) and fixed frequency and amplitude by oscillatory experiments. Each hydrogel has been analyzed by measurements of the frequency-dependency of the elastic modulus, G ′, in the linear viscoelastic region. The amount of polymeric chains giving an elastic response has been correlated to the chemical nature of the crosslinker used together with INUMA. Finally the release properties of the…

Characterizing archaeological bronze corrosion products intersecting electrochemical impedance measurements with voltammetry of immobilized particles

2017

Application of electrochemical impedance measurements to microparticulate deposits of copper corrosion products attached to graphite electrodes in contact with 0.10 M aqueous HClO4 electrolyte is described. The impedance measurements were sensitive to the applied potential and the amount of solid sample and were modeled taking into account the contribution of the uncovered base electrode. Several pairs of circuit elements provide monotonic variations which are able to characterize different corrosion compounds regardless the amount of microparticulate solid on the electrode. Application to a set of archaeological samples from the archaeological Roman site of Gadara (Jordan, 4th century AD) …

How does an In-containing underlayer prevent the propagation of defects in InGaN QW LEDs?: identification of SRH centers and modeling of trap profile

2021

Recent reports indicated that the use of an InAlN underlayer (UL) can significantly improve the efficiency of InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) LEDs. Currently, this result is explained by considering that the UL reduces the density of nonradiative recombination centers in the QWs. However, an experimental proof of the reduction of defects in the QWs is not straightforward. In this paper, we use combined electrical (I-V), optical (L-I), capacitance (C-V), steady-state photocapacitance (SSPC) and light-assisted capacitance-voltage (LCV) measurements to explain why devices with UL have a much higher efficiency than identical LEDs without UL. Specifically, we demonstrated an improvement in both elec…

Experimental study of the crystals [N(CH3)4]2Znl4by Raman spectroscopy and optical measurements; comparison with isomorph compounds

1992

Abstract Raman spectra and rotation angle of the indicatrix have been measured in the intermediate phase of the crystal [N(CH3)4]2Znl4 The results are consistent with the existence of large ferroelastric domains piled up along the a axis in a monoclinic phase P1121/a (Pnma notation in the paraelectric phase). The phase sequence (Pnma-P1121/a-P21ca) in this compound is different from other members of [N(CH3)4]2BX4 family.

Growth and Characterization of Anodic Films on Scandium

2013

The anodic behavior of Sc in a slightly alkaline aqueous solution is studied. Electrochemical and capacitance measurements suggest that passive films can be formed on the scandium surface under a high electric field. The formation of these layers occurs at low faradaic efficiency due to oxygen evolution. Photoelectrochemical experiments suggest the formation of a barrier layer with a thickness high enough to hinder external electron photoemission processes and allow the estimation of the bandgap of the films as a function of their formation voltage. The estimated bandgap values were lower than that reported for Sc2O3, suggesting the formation of hydrated phases and/or of a strongly oxygen d…

Electrical measurements in µ-EDM

2008

The phenomena occurring between the electrodes in electric discharge machining when manufacturing features on the micro-metre scale (µ-EDM) is not fully understood. Poor quantitative knowledge of the sources of variability affecting this process hinders the identification of its natural tolerance limits. Moreover, improvements in measuring systems contribute to the acquisition of new information that often conflicts with existent theoretical models of this process. The prime objective of this paper is to advance the experimental knowledge of µ-EDM by providing a measurement framework for the electrical discharges. The effects of the electrodes metallic materials (Ag, Ni, Ti, W) on the elect…

2020

The present work elaborates on the correlation between the amount and ordering of the free carbon phase in silicon oxycarbides and their charge carrier transport behavior. Thus, silicon oxycarbides possessing free carbon contents from 0 to ca. 58 vol.% (SiOC/C) were synthesized and exposed to temperatures from 1100 to 1800 &deg
