Strain Switching in van der Waals Heterostructures triggered by a Spin-Crossover Metal Organic Framework

2022

Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) combine different layered materials with properties of interest,1 such as two-dimensional (2D) semimetals, semiconductors, magnets or superconductors. These heterostructures provide the possibility of engineering new materials with emergent functionalities that are not accessible in another way. Beyond inorganic 2D materials, layered molecular materials remain still rather unexplored, with only few examples regarding their isolation as atomically thin-layers. By a proper chemical design, the physical properties of these systems can be tuned, as illustrated by the so-called spin-crossover (SCO) compounds, in which a spin transition can be induced by app…

Electrical sensing of the thermal and light induced spin transition in robust contactless spin-crossover/graphene hybrid devices

2022

Hybrid devices based on spin-crossover (SCO)/2D heterostructures grant a highly sensitive platform to detect the spin transition in the molecular SCO component and tune the properties of the 2D material. However, the fragility of the SCO materials upon thermal treatment, light irradiation or contact with surfaces and the methodologies used for their processing have limited their applicability. Here, we report an easily processable and robust SCO/2D hybrid device with outstanding performance based on the sublimable SCO [Fe(Pyrz)2] molecule deposited over CVD-graphene, which is fully compatible with electronics industry protocols. Thus, a novel methodology based on growing an elusive polymorp…

Direct atomic layer deposition of ultrathin aluminium oxide on monolayer $MoS_2$ exfoliated on gold: the role of the substrate

2021

In this paper we demonstrated the thermal Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) growth at 250 {\deg}C of highly homogeneous and ultra-thin ($\approx$ 3.6 nm) $Al_2O_3$ films with excellent insulating properties directly onto a monolayer (1L) $MoS_2$ membrane exfoliated on gold. Differently than in the case of 1L $MoS_2$ supported by a common insulating substrate ($Al_2O_3/Si$), a better nucleation process of the high-k film was observed on the 1L $MoS_2/Au$ system since the ALD early stages. Atomic force microscopy analyses showed a $\approx 50\%$ $Al_2O_3$ surface coverage just after 10 ALD cycles, its increasing up to $>90\%$ (after 40 cycles), and an uniform $\approx$ 3.6 nm film, after 80 cycle…

Quantum advantage in a molecular spintronic engine that harvests thermal fluctuation energy

2022

Recent theory and experiments have showcased how to harness quantum mechanics to assemble heat/information engines with efficiencies that surpass the classical Carnot limit. So far, this has required atomic engines that are driven by cumbersome external electromagnetic sources. Here, using molecular spintronics, we propose an implementation that is both electronic and autonomous. Our spintronic quantum engine heuristically deploys several known quantum assets by having a chain of spin qubits formed by the paramagnetic Co centers of phthalocyanine (Pc) molecules electronically interact with electron-spin selecting Fe/C60 interfaces. Density functional calculations reveal that transport fluct…

Tuning of the photoinduced charge transfer process in donor-acceptor "double cable" copolymers

2003

The covalent linking of acceptor molecules to electron donating conjugated polymer is an approach for the development of new photoactive materials for the fabrication of organic photoelectric conversion devices. With this strategy we have designed a polyalkylthiophene copolymer series containing in the side chain anthraquinone molecules as electron acceptor. The peculiar features of the copolymers are the good processability and the ease in tailoring the content of acceptor moieties. Their potential use as photoactive materials is investigated in terms of the photoinduced charge transfer properties, studied by FTIR photoinduced absorption and Light Induced Electron Spin Resonance spectrosco…

Probing the spin dimensionality in single-layer CrSBr van der Waals heterostructures by magneto-transport measurements

2022

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer unprecedented opportunities for fundamental physics and applied research in spintronics and magnonics. Beyond the pioneering studies on 2D CrI3 and Cr2Ge2Te6, this emerging field has expanded to 2D antiferromagnets exhibiting different spin anisotropies and textures. Of particular interest is the layered metamagnet CrSBr, a relatively air-stable semiconductor formed by antiferromagnetically-coupled ferromagnetic layers (Tc~150 K) that can be exfoliated down to the single-layer. It presents a complex magnetic behavior with a dynamic magnetic crossover leading to a low-temperature hidden order below T*~40 K. Here, we inspect the magneto-transport …

Description of hysteresis of Nickel Metal Hydride Battery

2012

A Dynamic Preisach Model for the description of the hysteresis in Nickel Metal Hydride Battery is presented. Both the hysteresis and the dynamical features of charging and discharging cycles are described. The identification of the model is obtained by using a neural network technique developed for magnetic systems. The model is validated by some experimental tests on commercial batteries.

Direct 3D mapping of the Fermi surface and Fermi velocity.

2017

Time-of-flight momentum microscopy is developed. It enables direct three-dimensional mapping of the topology of the Fermi surface, identification of electron and hole pockets, and quantification of Fermi velocity as a function of wavevector.

Asymmetrical tunneling in heavy fermion metals as a possible probe for their non-Fermi liquid peculiarities

2007

Tunneling conductivity and point contact spectroscopy between heavy fermion metal and a simple metallic point contact may serve as a convenient probing tool for non-Fermi liquid behavior. Landau Fermi liquid theory predicts that the differential conductivity is a symmetric function of voltage bias. This symmetry, in fact, holds if so called particle–hole symmetry is preserved. Here, we show that the situation can be different when one of the two metals is a heavy fermion one whose electronic system is a heavy fermion liquid. When the heavy fermion liquid undergoes fermion condensation quantum phase transition, the particle–hole symmetry in the excitation spectra is violated making both the …
