Mechanism change in a simulation of peer review: from junk support to elitism
2014
Abstract Peer review works as the hinge of the scientific process, mediating between research and the awareness/acceptance of its results. While it might seem obvious that science would regulate itself scientifically, the consensus on peer review is eroding; a deeper understanding of its workings and potential alternatives is sorely needed. Employing a theoretical approach supported by agent-based simulation, we examined computational models of peer review, performing what we propose to call redesign, that is, the replication of simulations using different mechanisms. Here, we show that we are able to obtain the high sensitivity to rational cheating that is present in literature. In additio…
Effcts of Dextran Sulphate (Dxs) on Lymphocyte Localization in Complement-Deficient Mice: Evidence that the Fifth Component of Complement is not Impl…
1984
AbstractThe effects of subcutaneously or intraperitoneally administered dextran sulphate (DXS) (5nmg/kg) on the subseguent 1 h localization of intravenously injected radiolabelled lymph node cells was investigated in complement deficient mice which lack C5.DXS proved to be equally as potent in depressing cell localizzation in deficient as compared to normal mice. These findings. indicate that the terminal complement components are not, essential for DXS activity.
Understanding the [2n+2n] reaction mechanism between a carbenoid intermediate and CO2
2016
ABSTRACTThe mechanism of the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with a nucleophilic carbenoid intermediate has been theoretically studied by using the bonding evolution theory (BET) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. BET combines topological analysis of the electron localisation function and catastrophe theory along a reaction path. This cycloaddition reaction is characterised by 16 structural stability domains, associated to the following sequence of catastrophes: C8H9NO4 + CO2: 16-CF†CF†F†CFF†C†C†[FF†]F†FCC†-0: C9H9NO6. Formation of the two new C-C and C-O single bonds evolves after the transition state structure is reached. The high nucleophilic character and the electronic structure of c…
Studying the phosphoryl transfer mechanism of the E. coli phosphofructokinase-2: from X-ray structure to quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics simula…
2019
Phosphofructokinases (Pfks) catalyze the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) and they are regulated in a wide variety of organisms. Although numerous aspects of the kinetics and regulation have been characterized for Pfks, the knowledge about the mechanism of the phosphoryl transfer reaction and the transition state lags behind. In this work, we describe the X-ray crystal structure of the homodimeric Pfk-2 from E. coli, which contains products in one site and reactants in the other, as well as an additional ATP molecule in the inhibitory allosteric site adjacent to the reactants. This complex was previously predicted when studying the kinetic mechanism of ATP inhibit…
A DFT study of the mechanism and selectivities of the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between 3-(benzylideneamino)oxindole and trans -β-nitrostyrene
2016
The mechanism and regioselectivities and stereoselectivities of the [3 + 2] cycloaddition (32CA) reaction of 3-(benzylideneamino) oxindole (AY) and trans-β-nitrostyrene have been studied using both B3LYP and ωB97XD density functional theory methods together with the standard 6-31G(d) basis set. Four reactive pathways associated with the ortho and meta regioselective channels and endo and exo stereoselective approaches modes have been explored and characterized. While the B3LYP functional fails to predict the experimental regioselectivity, the ωB97XD one succeeds to predict the experimentally observed meta regioselectivity favoring the formation of meta/endo cycloadduct as the major isomer. …
Equilibrium, Kinetic and Structural Properties of Gallium(III) and Some Divalent Metal Complexes Formed with the New DATAm and DATA5m Ligands
2017
The development of 68Ge/68Ga generators has made the positron-emitting 68Ga isotope widely accessible and raised interest in new chelate complexes of Ga3+. The hexadentate 1,4-di(acetate)-6-methyl[amino(methyl)acetate]perhydro-1,4-diazepane (DATAm) ligand and its bifunctional analogue, 1,4-di(acetate)-6-pentanoic acid[amino(methyl)acetate]perhydro-1,4-diazepane (DATA5m), rapidly form complexes with 68Ga in high radiochemical yield. The stability constants of DATAm and DATA5m complexes formed with Ga3+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+ and Ca2+ have been determined by using pH potentiometry, spectrophotometry (Cu2+) and 1H and 71Ga NMR spectroscopy (Ga3+). The stability constants of Ga(DATAm) and Ga(DATA5m)…
Reactive species formed upon interaction of water with fine particulate matter from remote forest and polluted urban air
2020
Interaction of water with fine particulate matter leads to the formation of reactive species (RS) that may influence the aging, properties, and health effects of atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we explore the RS yields of fine PM from remote forest (Hyytiälä, Finland) and polluted urban air (Mainz, Germany and Beijing, China) and relate these yields to different chemical constituents and reaction mechanisms. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry was used to characterize organic aerosol composition, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy with a spin-trapping technique was used to determine the concentrations •OH, O2•−, and carbon- or oxygen-centered organic radicals, …
