1997
The history of cities' cultural policies, Philippe Poivrier. At the crossroads of the renewal of political history and cultural history, a new research area has been open to historians after a heavy occupation of the land by sociologists and political scientists. The article goes into the methodological stakes that accompany the examination of this public treatment of culture. A new approach of the social stakes of our societies could take effect, by giving to contemporary history a goal that has not been very much in evidence until now: the well-argued study of locality.

Will they, won’t they? Dream sequences and virtual consummation in the series Moonlighting
2021
The 1980s series Moonlighting was one of the first dramedies on the small screen; it took its cue from venerable genres like the screwball comedy or the hard-boiled novel (particularly The Thin Man) and translated them to television’s changing structures and aesthetics, participating in what has been termed the second Golden Age of television. However, the Nick and Norah Charles of Moonlighting, David and Maddie, were not married: on the contrary, the series was largely fuelled by the tension between the two leads, who were constantly sparring but were seemingly drawn to one another. Though this romantic tension has long been a staple of the silver screen, translating it into weekly episode…
The prince and the pauper: Journalistic culture and Paralympic games in the Spanish print press
2016
The Paralympic Games are one of the world’s most important multisport events, maybe second only to the Olympic Games. However, research conducted to date shows that the media do not devote as much space to them as would accordingly be expected. This article proposes, through a case study, a new way of approaching this hypothetical discrimination by comparing the attention that the London Paralympic Games received from the Spanish print press with the attention that other sports received (football, basketball, tennis, cycling, motor sports and other minority sports) while those Games were being held. The main finding of our study is that over the period analysed, the Spanish press devoted l…
Effects of Equivalence Framing on the Perceived Truth of Political Messages and the Trustworthiness of Politicians
2017
Recent studies in psychology have shown that the framing of a message affects judgments about its truth, as negatively framed statements are perceived as more trustworthy than formally equivalent, positively framed statements. The current work examines this effect in the contexts of political communication and public opinion. The results of three experiments show that equivalence framing affects both the perceived truth of political messages and the trustworthiness of its source, and that one cause of this effect is that recipients have learned to associate negativity with news and positivity with persuasive communication through media exposure. Consequently, we find that positively framing…
De la patria (más) pequeña al mundo. Identidad nacional y socialismo español desde el País Valenciano (1931-1936)
2020
This article analyses the national discourse of Spanish socialism during the Second Republic and seeks to emphasise the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party’s identification with a Spanish national identity. Furthermore, by considering the case of the Valencian Region (País Valenciano), it points to ways in which that identity was expressed, showing the role of the local and regional spheres in the socialist interpretation of national identity. In this way, the Valencian example enables us to explore the situation “from below”, by studying political approaches, speeches, rites and practices in the militant press. The article argues that the national discourse of Spanish socialism found a solid…

Integrating a Nexus: the history of political discourse and language policy research
2019
Historians of political discourse and language policy researchers should join forces to develop methods of textual analysis that help to integrate political and intellectual history. They could do so by focusing their analysis on interconnections between material realities, human physical action, practices and structures, as well as institutions and ideologies as discursive constructs. Such a version of soft constructivism underscoring the discursive nature of much of politics encourages historians to analyse past political discourses more systematically. Concepts such as nexus, historical body, mobility and discursive transfers borrowed from language research deepen our analytical understa…
