A generic high-dose rate192Ir brachytherapy source for evaluation of model-based dose calculations beyond the TG-43 formalism
2015
Purpose: In order to facilitate a smooth transition for brachytherapy dose calculations from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group No. 43 (TG-43) formalism to model-b ...
X-ray spectroscopy and dosimetry with a portable CdTe device.
2007
Abstract X-ray spectra and dosimetry information are very important for quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) in medical diagnostic X-ray systems. An accurate knowledge of the diagnostic X-ray spectra would improve the patient dose optimization, without compromising image information. In this work, we performed direct diagnostic X-ray spectra measurements with a portable device, based on a CdTe solid-state detector. The portable device is able to directly measure X-ray spectra at high photon fluence rates, as typical of clinical radiography. We investigated on the spectral performances of the system in the mammographic energy range (up to ∼40 keV). Good system response to monoener…
Optical bullets and double bullet complexes in dissipative systems
2006
We show that optical light bullets can coexist with double bullet complexes in nonlinear dissipative systems. Coexistence occurs for a relatively large range of the system parameters, and is associated with either marginal stability or bistable existence of the two dissipative soliton species. In the case of marginal stability, spontaneous transformations of single bullets into double bullet complexes are observed. Among the bistable cases, we show how both clockwise and anticlockwise rotating double bullet complexes can be formed out of the phase-controlled interaction of two single bullets. The internal dynamics of pulsating double bullet complexes, with oscillations in both the spatial s…
Nonlinear Current Generation in Degenerate Semiconductors Embedded in Constant and Low-Frequency Electric Fields
2006
The explicit analytical forms of nonlinear currents in degenerate semiconductors serving as sources of coherent radiation in the wavelength millimetric and submillimetric ranges are established.
Monte Carlo dosimetric characterization of the Cs-137 selectron/LDR source: evaluation of applicator attenuation and superposition approximation effe…
2004
The purpose of this study is to calculate the dose rate distribution for the Amersham Cs-137 pellet source used in brachytherapy with the Selectron low-dose-rate remote afterloading system in gynaecological applications using the Monte Carlo code GEANT4. The absolute dose rate distribution for the pellet source was obtained and presented as a one-dimensional absolute dose rate table as well as in the Task Group 43 dose-calculation formalism. In this study, excellent agreement was found between the point source theoretical model using fitted polynomial values and Monte Carlo calculations of the dose rate distribution for the pellet source. A comparison study was also made between the dose ra…
A 20-channel receive-only mouse array coil for a 3 T clinical MRI system
2011
A 20-channel phased-array coil for MRI of mice has been designed, constructed, and validated with bench measurements and high-resolution accelerated imaging. The technical challenges of designing a small, high density array have been overcome using individual small-diameter coil elements arranged on a cylinder in a hexagonal overlapping design with adjacent low impedance preamplifiers to further decouple the array elements. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and noise amplification in accelerated imaging were simulated and quantitatively evaluated in phantoms and in vivo mouse images. Comparison between the 20-channel mouse array and a length-matched quadrature driven small animal birdcage coil sh…
A multi-reading method for dosimetric TL measurements with CaSO4:Dy phosphors
1979
Abstract A technique of dosimetric TL measurement for CaSO 4 :Dy phosphors is proposed. It is based on the results obtained in previous works, in which an approximately multi-Gaussian energetic distribution of the traps associated with the dosimetric peak and a different supralinear behaviour of the Gaussians were found. A single dosimeter is read a number of times by successive heating cycles which, starting always from room temperature, reach higher and higher final temperatures; in this manner it is possible to obtain consistent information on the dose several times. The drawback of the usual TL measurements, that is the total emptying of the dosimeter during one measurement, is then avo…
Technical note: Monte Carlo derivation of TG-43 dosimetric parameters for radiation therapy resources and 3M Cs-137 sources
2005
In clinical brachytherapy dosimetry, a detailed dose rate distribution of the radioactive source in water is needed in order to plan for quality treatment. Two Cs-137 sources are considered in this study; the Radiation Therapy Resources 67-800 source (Radiation Therapy Resources Inc., Valencia, CA) and the 3M model 6500/6D6C source. A complete dosimetric dataset for both sources has been obtained by means of the Monte Carlo GEANT4 code. Dose rate distributions are presented in two different ways; following the TG43 formalism and in a 2D rectangular dose rate table. This 2D dose rate table is helpful for the TPS quality control and is fully consistent with the TG43 dose calculation formalism…
SU-E-T-237: Monte Carlo Dosimetric Characterization of the Mobetron Mobile Linac
2014
Purpose: The aim of this work is to characterize dosimetrically a clinical intraoperative electron beam accelerator, Mobetron (IntraOp Medical, Inc.) in clinical use in our Hospital. Once this first step is completed our purpose is to evaluate shielding requirements for such a device by preparing adequate phase space files. Methods: It is known that electron beam simulation parameters required for state-of-the-art Monte Carlo codes to obtain a good match with measured data, like the mean energy or the FWHM, may not be code-independent due to the different set of process simulated and formalisms involved. Then, to cross-check our results against any issue in the simulation we have compared e…
A mammographic phantom image reconstruction through Monte Carlo techniques
2005
Mammographic phantoms are employed during quality control test in breast screening locations and other health centres. These quality controls are performed to achieve the image quality required to detect breast abnormalities, ensuring the minimum risk to radiographied women. The aim of this study is the development of a methodology to reproduce the image of a mammogram during a routine exposure in a breast screening programme. In a first step, the CIRS 11A (MAMMO PHANTOM SP01) mammographic phantom has been simplified and modelled with the Monte Carlo transport code MCNP-4c2. Different tallies (F2 and F5) have been used to score the photon flux under the phantom, and a group of aluminium lay…
