Temperature-related effects on respiratory medical prescriptions in Spain

2021

Background The increased risk of mortality during periods of high and low temperatures has been well established. However, most of the studies used daily counts of deaths or hospitalisations as health outcomes, although they are the ones at the top of the health impact pyramid reflecting only a limited proportion of patients with the most severe cases. Objectives This study evaluates the relationship between short-term exposure to the daily mean temperature and medication prescribed for the respiratory system in five Spanish cities. Methods We fitted time series regression models to cause-specific medical prescriptions, including different respiratory subgroups and age groups. We included a…

Heart Failure Occurrence: Mining Significant Patterns and 10 Days Early Prediction

2021

Electronic health records containing patient’s medical history, drug prescription, vital signs measurements, and many more parameters, are being frequently extracted and stored as unused raw data. On the other hand, machine learning and data mining techniques are becoming popular in the medical field, providing the ability to extract knowledge and valuable information from electronic health records along with accurately predicting future disease occurrence. This chapter presents a study on medical data containing vital signs recorded over the course of some years, for real patients suffering from heart failure. The first significant patterns that come along with heart failure occurrence are…

Manejo perioperatorio del dolor en el paciente en tratamiento crónico con opiáceos

2011

Pain is one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care and the frequency of prescription of opioid analgesics by both primary care physicians and specialists has increased. It is therefore unsurprising that many patients with chronic pain who must undergo scheduled or emergency surgery will be on long-term medication, including opioids. Managing postoperative pain, even with high doses of drugs, seems to be more difficult in regular users of such analgesics, possibly because of an apparent association of opioid use with increased tolerance and hyperalgesia. Postoperative pain relief should be carefully tailored in these cases by means of a management plan worked out along with the …

Incidence of potential drug interactions in a transplant centre setting and relevance of electronic alerts for clinical practice support

2013

Background Adverse drug events may occur as a result of drug–drug interactions (DDIs). Information technology (IT) systems can be an important decision-making tool for healthcare workers to identify DDIs.Objective The aim of the study is to analyse drug prescriptions in our main hospital units, in order to measure the incidence and severity of potential DDIs. The utility of clinical decision-support systems (CDSSs) and computerised physician order entry (CPOE) in term of alerts adherence was also assessed. DDIs were assessed using a Micromedex healthcare series database. Methods The system, adopted by the hospital, generates alerts for prescriptions with negative interactions and thanks to a…

Inappropriateness in laboratory medicine: an elephant in the room?

2017

Appropriateness of diagnostic testing can be conventionally described as prescription of the right test, using the right method, at the right time, to the right patient, with the right costs and for producing the right outcome. There is ongoing debate about the real burden of inappropriateness in laboratory diagnostics. The media coverage of this issue has also recently led to either over- or under-emphasizing the clinical, organizational and economic consequences. This is quite problematic, inasmuch as some reliable data are available in the current scientific literature, showing that inappropriateness of laboratory testing can be as high as 70%. This is especially evident for, though not …

Distance learning training in genetics and genomics testing for Italian health professionals: results of a pre and post-test evaluation

2022

BackgroundProgressive advances in technologies for DNA sequencing and decreasing costs are allowing an easier diffusion of genetic and genomic tests. Physicians’ knowledge and confidence on the topic is often low and not suitable for manage this challenge. Tailored educational programs are required to reach a more and more appropriate use of genetic technologies.MethodsA distance learning course has been created by experts from different Italian medical associations with the support of the Italian Ministry of Health. The course was directed to professional figures involved in prescription and interpretation of genetic tests. A pretest-post-test study design was used to assess knowledge impr…

Les anti-agrégants plaquettaires au cours du syndrome coronarien aigu. Données des grandes études

2010

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of early death and morbidity in developed countries and is becoming a growing problem in many developing countries. Currently, anti-coagulants play a major role in the management of the acute phase in association or not with reperfusion strategies. The combination of clopidogrel and aspirin, in accordance with the results of large randomized trials, is the treatment of reference. However two new drugs, a thienopyridine (prasugrel), and a cyclo-pentyl-triazolo-pyridine (ticagrelor) have shown their interest in major studies in comparison with clopidogrel. As a result, several effective P2Y12 receptor antagonist anti-platelet agents are now availabl…

The effect of concomitant benzodiazepine use on neurocognition in stable, long-term patients with bipolar disorder

2020

Objective: Neurocognitive dysfunction is a common feature of bipolar disorder even in euthymia, and psychopharmacological treatment could have an effect on cognition. Long-term prescription of benzodiazepines in bipolar disorder is a common practice, and their effect on neurocognition has not been well studied in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of concomitant benzodiazepine long-term use on neurocognitive function in stable euthymic bipolar disorder patients. Methods: Seventy-three euthymic bipolar disorder outpatients and 40 healthy individuals were assessed using a neurocognitive battery. Patients were classified in two groups according to the presence of…
