Ossified spinal meningiomas: Clinical and surgical features

Abstract Object Meningiomas constitute 25% of primary spinal tumors and predominantly involve the thoracic spinal cord. Although calcifications are commonly seen in intracranial meningiomas, gross calcifications are observed in only 1–5% of all spinal meningiomas. We report the clinical findings, surgical strategy and histological features of 9 patients with ossified spinal meningiomas (OSMs). Diagnostic radiological examinations and risk of intracranial tumours in adults—findings from the Interphone Study

Abstract Background Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation is among the few well-established brain tumour risk factors. We used data from the Interphone study to evaluate the effects of exposure to low-dose radiation from diagnostic radiological examinations on glioma, meningioma and acoustic neuroma risk. Methods Brain tumour cases (2644 gliomas, 2236 meningiomas, 1083 neuromas) diagnosed in 2000–02 were identified through hospitals in 13 countries, and 6068 controls (population-based controls in most centres) were included in the analysis. Primary optic nerve sheath meningioma

BACKGROUND. Radiotherapy (RT) has occasionally been practiced in the treatment of optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM). Recently, stereotactic fractionated RT (SFRT) has been introduced as a tool with better precision for RT delivery. A comprehensive review was undertaken to provide more insight into this matter. METHODS. A literature search was performed to identify reports dealing with both clinical aspects (diagnosis) and treatment in ONSM, focusing on RT in primary (p)ONSM. Peritumoral Edema in Meningiomas

Although generally benign tumors, meningiomas may be associated with extensive peritumoral brain edema as seen on computed tomographic scans. Fifty-two patients with intracranial meningiomas were studied, and the hypodense areas on computed tomographic scans were related to the intraoperative microsurgical findings and to the sizes of the tumors. We have identified three kinds of tumor-brain interfaces characterized by different difficulties in microsurgical dissection: smooth type, transitional type, and invasive type. Meningiomas, commonly benign tumors, rarely display aggressive behavior by recurrences and invasion. In addition to surgery, irradiation is beneficial for recurrent, atypical, and malignant meningiomas. The role of chemotherapy, however, remains controversial, although there is evidence that meningiomas respond well to adjuvant chemotherapy.
