Data from: Ancient symbiosis confers desiccation resistance to stored grain pest beetles

2017

Microbial symbionts of insects provide a range of ecological traits to their hosts that are beneficial in the context of biotic interactions. However, little is known about insect symbiont-mediated adaptation to the abiotic environment, e.g. temperature and humidity. Here we report on an ancient clade of intracellular, bacteriome-located Bacteroidetes symbionts that are associated with grain and wood pest beetles of the phylogenetically distant families Silvanidae and Bostrichidae. In the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, we demonstrate that the symbionts affect cuticle thickness, melanization and hydrocarbon profile, enhancing desiccation resistance and thereby strongly i…

Lex mercatoria, civil law e common law, nel processo di unificazione del diritto privato marittimo internazionale. Il "Caso Canada".

2009

The essay deals with the problem of the unification of international maritime law by virtue of maritime international customary rules (lex mercatoria maritima). The first part focuses on the underpinnings of the application of customary international law in different countries and, in particular, in Italy and France, then on the evolution of international maritime law as a mixed legal system, drawing from civil law sources, even in England. The second part of the essay deals with the problem of unification of maritime law in Canada, which, as a mixed legal system, owing to the existence of a civil law system in the Province of Québec, could be observed as a “laboratory” of the relationship …

Lo sfogo dell'amante e la 'retorica' del prologo (Plauto Merc. 1-39)

2014

In the Mercator’s prologue the necessity to tell the background overlaps the ethos of the lover, who, through his unruly language, fluctuates between the ‘talking too much’ and the ‘talking too little’. These categories bring to a metapoetic and ‘rhetoric’ reflection on the composition and modality of the prologue itself. If the invitation to the brevity is a constant scenic standard in all the Plautus comedies, the opportunity to ‘speak little’ is necessary especially in the prologues, in order to receive the public’s benignitas (in other words, the willingness to listen). The Mercator’s long exposition therefore represents a playful infraction, which subverts this obligatory rule in the p…

La voce, il gesto, la scena. Elementi teatrali nelle commedie latine del XII e XIII secolo

2019

Legal customs and the lex mercatoria in international private maritime law

2010

The article deals with the problem of unification of international private maritime law, by virtue of private self regulation (lex mercatoria). After a general introduction, the second chapter deals with the underpinnings of the so called lex mercatoria, focusing on the customs in international private maritime law and on their application to the international disputes. The third chapter breafly outlines the nature of maritime law as a mixed legal system in the aim of explaining the high possibility of application of international trade customs in maritime law. Finally, the third chapter contains a review of English and Italian cases dealing with the application of customs in international …
