OLSR Mesh Networks for Broadband Access: Enhancements, Implementation and Deployment
2008
In the context of an EU FP6 project, ADHOCSYS, we have developed a reliable and cost-effective solution for broadband Internet access in rural and mountainous areas. This solution is built based on multi-hop wireless mesh networking technologies and covers many aspects such as routing, reliability, QoS, security, self-configuration, self-healing, remote network monitoring, power management etc. In this paper, we present solely the routing aspect of the developed mesh network, focusing on new routing features that have been designed, implemented, and deployed in a real-life operational network. These new features are developed based on an extended version of the OLSR protocol. The test resul…
Steady-state security analysis on the transmission grid for various scenarios of wind generation in Sicily
2009
The proposed paper is part of a research aimed at assessing the impact of wind generation on the transmission grid of Sicily, second among the Italian regions for wind power installed. After describing the current state of wind energy generation in Sicily, the paper reports and comments the results of the steady-state security analysis done for various scenarios of wind penetration. For each scenario (maximum and minimum load conditions), the redistribution of power flows on the transmission network, the voltage profiles at nodes, the analysis of contingencies and losses variations are reported.
Transmission line meshes for computational simulation of electromagnetic modes in the Earth's atmosphere
2007
PurposeTwo transmission line meshes to simulate electromagnetic waves in the Earth's atmosphere are developed, one with the link transmission lines connected in parallel and the other with connections in series.Design/methodology/approachThe equations describing propagation of waves through these parallel or series meshes are equivalent to the Maxwell equations for TEr or TMr modes in a spherical cavity with lossy dielectric material between the external conducting surfaces, respectively.FindingsThe transmission line meshes are used for a numerical study of the natural electromagnetic noise due to lightning discharges in the Earth‐ionosphere cavity.Originality/valueThe numerical algorithm f…
A Novel Wireless Sensor Network for Electric Power Metering
2015
Wireless sensor network with lightweight and efficient communication infrastructures are today a great interest, both at research and industrial level, as they are the basis for reliable monitoring services. Mesh networks are ideal candidates in this scenario, as they can be very fault-tolerant. After introducing wireless network systems requirements, we show the design of a mesh network routing protocol based on AODV schemas. Its implementation runs on top of low-cost off-the-shelf components, and allowed us to build a custom power meter wireless sensor node.

Barriers to medication counselling for people with mental health disorders: a six country study
2010
Provision of medication information may improve adherence and prevent medication related problems. People with mental health disorders commonly receive less medication counselling from pharmacists than people with other common long term and persistent disorders. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare and contrast barriers pharmacy students perceive toward providing medication counselling for people with mental health disorders in Australia, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, India and Latvia. Methods: Barriers identified by third-year pharmacy students as part of the International Pharmacy Students´ Health Survey were content analysed using a directed approach. Students´ responses we…
CVS: Using VLANs to Counteract the Effect of Topology Changes in Quasi-Static Mesh Access Networks
2006
Mesh networks are candidate to play the role of switched Ethernet LANs over extended areas and with a sensibly higher flexibility. Actually, mesh networks can exploit both Ethernet and wireless technologies, e.g. Wi-Fi and/or free-space optical links, to provide a high degree of redundancy in an access network, and to provide users with powerful means to connect with each other. By using such technologies, the mesh topology remains stable for hours, so that the mesh topology can be considered quasi-static. However, large meshes require a heavy overhead in the network control plane as for the management of end-to-end paths, which can change due to mobility of users and due to occasional fail…
Switched Ethernet Networking over LEO Satellite
2005
Satellite onboard switching capabilities, and their possibility to enable "over-the-air" networks, are a strongly innovative achievement of modern satellite communication. The exploitation of satellite networking is especially relevant in the case of low Earth orbit satellites (LEO), where the reduced latency makes a LEO mesh network highly appealing and competitive with terrestrial solutions also in terms of performance. However, while the idea of a LEO mesh network is well understood, we are far from an ultimate answer on which is the best and more appropriate networking solution for moving LEO satellite network nodes. This paper promotes the adoption of existing layer-2 networking soluti…

Novel Fault-Tolerant Routing Technique for ZMesh Topology based Network-on-Chip Design
2020
This paper proposes a novel fault-tolerant routing technique for ZMesh topology based Network-on-Chip (NoC) design. The proposed algorithm caters the link faults and routes the data packets seamlessly to the destination. This algorithm has been compared with the existing techniques proposed for mesh topology counterparts. The experimentations have been carried out by increasing ZMesh network size and percentage of link faults. The results show that in the event of link failures the proposed algorithm routes the data from source to destination flawlessly.
