A series of combined main-chain side-group liquid-crystalline polymers was synthesized by melt polycondensation from trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, chloro-1,4-phenylene diacetate and 6-(4-methoxy-4′-biphenylyloxy)hexyl-1,4-phenylene diacetate. These polyesters combine the features of rigid-rod main-chain LC-polymers and of side-group LC-polymers. Polymers with small fractions of mesogenic side-groups (5 and 10 mol-%) have lower melting points than the parent polymer poly(chloro-1,4-phenylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) but are still liquid crystalline up to their decomposition at T ≥ 400°C. In polymers with larger fractions of mesogenic side-groups (50 and 100 mol-%) partial isom…

The synthesis and the phase behaviour of liquid crystalline main chain polymers are described. In these poly- and copolyesters the mesogenic units are linked by highly flexible oligodimethylsiloxane spacers. The comparison of their phase behaviour with that of polyesters known from the literature shows that dimethylsiloxane spacers as a replacement for alkyl spacers are leading to a drastic decrease of the transition temperatures. Depending on the length of the spacer glass transitions as low as −111°C can be achieved. The widths of the liquid crystalline phases thereby are retained up to a spacerlength of 13 oxydimethylsilanediyl (dimethylsiloxane) units. The homopolyesters mainly show sme…
Supramolecular Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Materials with Nematic Mesophase Based on Methylated Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine and Mesogenic Carb…
2006
Supramolecular interaction of fully methylated hyperbranched polyethylenimines (PEI) with a mesogen-based carboxylic acid, 5-(p-cyanobiphenoxy)pentanoic acid, results in the formation of supramolecular complexes exhibiting thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases. In contrast to the common smectic mesophases of most dendritic LC polymers, nematic LC phase were observed. The complexation of PEI and the mesogen units is due to electrostatic interaction between the carboxylate groups and the ammonium end groups of PEI. LC properties were investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing light optical microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry.
Mesogen-Initiated Linear Polyglycerol Isomers: The Ordering Effect of a Single Cholesterol Unit on “Sticky” Isotropic Chains
2011
Synthesis, thermal properties, and the liquid crystalline (LC) order of polymers consisting of a single mesogenic cholesterol unit and flexible, linear polyglycerol (PG) or poly(glyceryl glycerol) (PGG) chains have been investigated. Incorporation of the single mesogen has been achieved by using cholesterol directly as an initiator for the oxyanionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) or isopropylidene glyceryl glycidyl ether (IGG). The controlled polymerization allowed the synthesis of a series of peculiar rod–coil type polyethers with molecular weights of 600–2300 g/mol, representing a degree of polymerization (DPn) of 4–30 for both PG and PGG with the …
Phase Behaviour of Dye-Containing Liquid Crystalline Copolymers and their Mixtures with Low Molecular Weight Liquid Crystals
1985
Liquid crystalline side-chain polymers can be obtained by connecting the mesogenic groups and the polymer chain via a flexible spacer. The liquid crystalline polymers combine the well-known properties of low molecular weight liquid crystals with those of polymers.1
1984
The fiber patterns of a series of liquid crystalline polymers were analysed. For polymers with smectic phases and for polymers with long spacers and nematic phases, the mesogenic groups orient perpendicularly to the polymer main chains which are parallel to the fiber axis. The fiber pattern indicate a short range order of the mesogenic groups analogous to that in low-molecular weight liquid crystals. For polymers with short spacer groups and nematic phases qualitatively different fiber patterns are found. These fiber patterns are indicative for a special nematic phase formed by ribbon-like molecules.
1986
Covalently crosslinked liquid crystalline networks with elastic properties were prepared in isotropic solution from linear liquid crystalline polymers. As linear precursors for the networks were used: (i) polymers with the mesogenic groups in the side groups (polyacrylates and polymethacrylates), (ii) polymers with the mesogenic groups in the main chain (polymalonates) and (iii) polymers with the mesogenic groups in main chain and side groups (“combined liquid crystalline polymers”). In all crosslinked polymers the liquid crystalline phases of the linear polymers are retained. For low degrees of crosslinking (≤2 mol-%) the phase transition temperatures remain nearly unchanged. These elastom…
Structures, properties and miscibility behaviour of liquid crystalline polycatenar tetrone derivatives
1995
Abstract The tetrones represent an interesting new mesogenic building block. The results of this study show that they can be incorporated into a variety of mesophases. A smectic phase was observed in the polycatenar compound with four terminal chains as expected. The phase exhibits a tilted structure (Sc phase) to prevent void formation. The compound with six pendant chains forms a columnar phase. In spite of their structural similarity, the tetrones studied tended not to be completely miscible. However, complete miscibility with a semi-discoid phenylhydrazone was observed. When this hydrazone, which forms a columnar ‘Dho phase’, was mixed with tetrone which forms a columnar ‘Dhd phase’ a c…

X-ray measurements of stretched crosslinked liquid-crystalline side group polymers show that two types of orientation of the mesogenic groups relative to the polymer chains (parallel or perpendicular) are possible, depending on the structure of the polymer chain. For two liquid-crystalline polymethacrylates with long spacer groups (6 methylene units) the mesogenic groups orient preferably perpendicularly to the polymer chains (axis of strain). For three liquid-crystalline polyacrylates with long or short spacer groups (6 or 2 methylene units), the mesogenic groups orient preferably parallel to the polymer chains (axis of strain). The reason for this difference is not yet clear. These result…
Shaping 1,2,4-Triazolium Fluorinated Ionic Liquid Crystals
2023
The synthesis and thermotropic behaviour of some di-alkyloxy-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolium trifluoromethane-sulfonate salts bearing a seven-carbon atom perfluoroalkyl chain on the cation is herein described. The fluorinated salts presenting a 1,2,4-triazole as a core and differing in the length of two alkyloxy chains on the phenyl ring demonstrated a typical liquid crystalline behaviour. The mesomorphic properties of this set of salts were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The thermotropic properties are discussed on the grounds of the tuneable structures of the salts. The results showed the existence of a monotropic, columnar, liquid crystalline phase…
