π-Ring currents in doped coronenes with nitrogen and boron: diatropic-paratropic duality.

2015

The change in the electronic structure of coronene upon doping with nitrogen or boron has been theoretically studied by means of its magnetic properties and magnetic field induced current density maps. The addition of two atoms of nitrogen or boron to the central ring of coronene causes a drastic variation in the delocalization of π-electrons, which does not depend on its nature but instead on its position. Then, doping in the para position makes coronene more aromatic while doping in the meta position makes it to become antiaromatic. The magnetic behavior of the pristine molecule is characterized by two concentric currents flowing in opposite senses that are converted into hemi-perimetric …

Review & meta-analysis: isopropanolic black cohosh extract iCR for menopausal symptoms - an update on the evidence

2020

A systematic literature search revealed 35 clinical studies and one meta-analysis comprising 43,759 women, of which 13,096 were treated with isopropanolic Cimicifuga racemosa extract (iCR). Compared to placebo, iCR was significantly superior for treating neurovegetative and psychological menopausal symptoms, with a standardized mean difference of 0.694 in favor of iCR (p<0.0001). Effect sizes were larger when higher dosages of iCR as monotherapy or in combination with St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum [HP]) were given ( 1.020 and 0.999, respectively), suggesting a dose-depend- ency. For psychological symptoms, the iCRþHP combination was superior to iCR monotherapy. Efficacy of iCR was c…

The prognostic value of skeletal muscle index on clinical and survival outcomes after cytoreduction and HIPEC for peritoneal metastases from colorect…

2021

BACKGROUND Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hypertermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) represent the most effective strategy to manage peritoneal metastases (PM). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the impact of body composition on clinical outcomes in patients with PM. METHODS A systematic literature search was performed using Medline, Web of Science and EMBASE databases from inception to the 20st August 2020. Data were independently extracted by 3 authors. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess quality and risk of bias of studies. Pooled analyses were performed using Mantel-Haenszel method to estimate overall effect size with mean differences or odd ratios (O…

Meta-Analysis in Epidemiology

2007

The use of meta-analyses in order to synthesise the evidence from epidemiological studies has become more and more popular recently. It has been estimated by Egger et al. (1998) that from articles retrieved by MEDLINE with the medical subject heading (MeSH) term “meta-analysis” some 33% reported results of a meta-analysis from randomised clinical trials and nearly the same proportion (27%) were from observational studies, including 12% papers in which the aetiology of a disease was investigated. The remaining papers include methodological publications or review articles. Reasons for the popularity of meta-analyses are the growing information in the scientific literature and the need of time…

Cognitive and emotional variables predicting treatment outcome of cognitive behavior therapies for patients with medically unexplained symptoms: A me…

2021

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is the best-evaluated psychological approach to treat patients with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). We still need a better understanding of what characterizes patients with MUS who benefit more or less from CBT. This systematic review aimed to identify patients' cognitive-emotional characteristics predicting the outcome of CBT for MUS.A systematic literature search (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science) revealed 37 eligible studies, 23 of these provided data for meta-analyses. Mean correlation coefficients between predictor variables and the outcomes (symptom intensity, physical or social-emotional functioning) were calculated using a random-effects model.…

Age and Semantic Inhibition Measured by the Hayling Task: A Meta-Analysis.

2016

Objective Cognitive aging is commonly associated with a decrease in executive functioning (EF). A specific component of EF, semantic inhibition, is addressed in the present study, which presents a meta-analytic review of the literature that has evaluated the performance on the Hayling Sentence Completion test in young and older groups of individuals in order to assess the magnitude of the age effect. Method A systematic search involving Web of Science, PsyINFO, PsychARTICLE, and MedLine databases and Google Scholar was performed. A total of 11 studies were included in this meta-analysis, encompassing a total of 887 participants; 440 young and 447 older adults. The effect sizes for group dif…

Identifying conserved genes involved in crop tolerance to cold stress

2022

Low temperature is a limiting factor for crop productivity in tropical and subtropical climates. Cold stress response in plants involves perceiving and relaying the signal through a transcriptional cascade composed of different transduction components, resulting in altered gene activity. We performed a meta-analysis of four previously published datasets of cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive crops to better understand the gene regulatory networks and identify key genes involved in cold stress tolerance conserved across phylogenetically distant species. Re-analysing the raw data with the same bioinformatics pipeline, we identified common cold tolerance-related genes. We found 236 and 242 common…

Prognostic and predictive factors in colorectal cancer: Kirsten Ras in CRC (RASCAL) and TP53CRC collaborative studies.

2005

Mutations in the Ki-ras and TP53 genes are the most frequently observed genetic alterations in colorectal cancer (CRC). Ki-ras mutations are mostly found in codons 12 and 13, and less in codon 61. The majority of the TP53 mutations occur in the core domain which contains the sequence-specific DNA binding activity of the protein, and they results in loss of DNA binding. Few centres have sufficient patients to collect detailed information in the large numbers required to determine the impact of individual ki-ras and TP53 genotypes on outcome. Moreover, it has been reported that specific genetic alterations, and not any mutation, might play a different biological role in cancer progression. Fo…

Assessing Prognosis Following Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Therapeutic Hypothermia

2013

SUMMARY Background: The prognosis of patients who are comatose after cardiopulmo nary resuscitation (CPR) is poor but can be improved by mild therapeutic hypothermia. We studied the question whether the known, reliable indicators of a poor prognosis after CPR are also valid for patients treated with CPR and hypothermia. Methods: This review is based on a selective search of the PubMed database for recent articles on the assessment of prognosis in persons who are comatose after CPR and therapeutic hypothermia. Results: On the basis of 21 clinical trials, 4 of which yielded level I evidence, 9 level II evidence, and 8 level III evidence, the following were identified as reliable indicators of…

Impact of combination chemotherapy on toxicity in ovarian cancer: Systematic revision of literature and meta-analysis

2016

The purpose of this statistical analysis is to demonstrate the real advantages in terms of cost-benefit of combination chemotherapy compared with single-agent chemotherapy. The trials, which are used in this meta-analysis, have been searched on PubMed database and they are phase II or randomized phase III studies with only chemotherapy regimens. In this meta-analysis were evaluated adverse effects with odds ratio (OR), which is expressed in 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Only 4 studies contained all the set selection criteria and they were selected. The data, which were obtained, were analyzed using MedCalc Application. The combination therapy was more strongly linked to certain adverse…
