Metabolic effect of berberine-silymarin association: A meta-analysis of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials.

2019

The aim of this study is to assess the impact of a combination of berberine and silymarin on serum lipids and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) through a systematic review of literature and meta-analysis of the available randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials (RCTs). A systematic literature search in SCOPUS, PubMed-Medline, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases was conducted up to October 2, 2018, in order to identify RCTs assessing changes in plasma concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and FPG during treatment with berberine and silymarin in combina…

The Effects of Alveolar Ridge Preservation: A Meta-Analysis

2015

Purpose The aim of this article was to analyze the horizontal, vertical, and histological effects of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) versus the ones of unassisted socket healing, in the format of an up-to-date review and meta-analysis. Materials and Methods An extensive electronic search in the electronic databases of the National Library of Medicine was conducted for articles published up to June 2014 to identify literature presenting data on the topic of ARP. Only randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, and prospective trials were included for meta-analysis. Results After screening 903 abstracts from the electronic database, we included 64 studies in qualitative and 18…

Executive remuneration determinants: New evidence from meta-analysis

2019

This meta-analysis takes stock of 121 C.E.O. pay studies published between 1998 and 2018 with the objective of identifying the main drivers of C.E.O. pay from a global perspective and contributing to the agency vs managerial debate on this ground. The meta-results disclose a positive C.E.O. pay–performance correlation (the highest correlation coefficient corresponds to Earnings per share with a 34%) as the agency theory prescribes and the governance policies promote. However, firm size still predominates as the main driver of C.E.O. pay (correlation coefficient is around 44%) according to managerial premises. Moreover, our results reconcile both approaches because results of the meta-regres…

P5313The association between coffee and caffeine consumption and renal function: insight from individual-level data, Mendelian randomization, and met…

2019

Abstract Background The reported relationship between coffee intake and renal function is poorly understood. Purpose By applying on two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) and systematic review and meta-analysis we investigated the association between caffeine and coffee intake with prevalent CKD and markers of renal function. Methods For the individual data analysis we analysed the NHANES data on renal function markers and caffeine intake. MR was implemented by using summary-level data from genome-wide association studies conducted on coffee intake (N=91,462) and kidney function (N=133,413). Inverse variance weighted method (IVW), weighted median-based method, MR-Egger, MR-RAPS, MR-PRESSO …

X Chromosome Contribution to the Genetic Architecture of Primary Biliary Cholangitis

2021

Background & aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease. Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals). Results: Single-marker association analyses found approximately 100 loci displaying P < 5 × 10-4, with the most significant being a signal within the OTUD5 gene (rs3027490; P = 4.80 × 10-6; odds…

How to deal with second line dilemma in metastatic colorectal cancer? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2019

e15006 Background: Monoclonal antibodies targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have demonstrated efficacy in combination with chemotherapy as second line for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). However, there is still a paucity of evidence or guidelines suggesting the right sequential treatment in all RAS (KRAS/NRAS) wild type(wt)mCRC. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of these targeted therapies by reviewing literature data. Methods: We used Cochrane, EMBASE and Medline databases to select phase III clinical trials containing efficacy and safety data about chemotherapy (CT) or CT + targeted agents combination (Anti-VEGF an…

Recurrences following treatment of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Objective A systematic review and meta-analysis was made of the incidence of recurrences in patients with proliferative verrucous leukoplakia subjected to different types of treatment. Methods The study was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement guidelines. A literature search was made in the Medline (PubMed), EMBASE and Web of Science databases, together with a manual search, covering the period from 1985 to January 2020, with no language restrictions. Studies were included if they described treatments applied to at least 10 patients with the corresponding outcomes. Methodological quality was evaluated using Jadad sca…

Efficacy and safety of first-line checkpoint inhibitors-based treatments for non-oncogene-addicted non-small-cell lung cancer: a systematic review an…

2021

Background: Frontline immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)-based regimens in non-oncogene-addicted non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have been deeply investigated. To rank the available therapeutic options, we carried out a systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis. Methods: A comprehensive search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ICI regimens, and a pairwise and a network meta-analysis (NMA) with an all-comers and a stratified strategy were conducted. Endpoints were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR) and treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). Results: Nineteen RCTs involving 17 treatment regimens were included. For the all-co…

The association between extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields and childhood leukaemia in epidemiology: enough is enough?

2010

Background: Previous pooled analyses have reported an association between magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia. We present a pooled analysis based on primary data from studies on residential magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia published after 2000. Methods: Seven studies with a total of 10 865 cases and 12 853 controls were included. The main analysis focused on 24-h magnetic field measurements or calculated fields in residences. Results: In the combined results, risk increased with increase in exposure, but the estimates were imprecise. The odds ratios for exposure categories of 0.1–0.2 μT, 0.2–0.3 μT and ⩾0.3 μT, compared with <0.1 μT, were 1.07 (95% CI 0.81–1.41), 1.16 (0.69–1.93)…
