Clinical and Brain Imaging Findings in a Child with Vitamin B12 Deficiency
2021
Vitamin B12 (Vit-B12) deficiency is a rare and treatable cause of failure to thrive and delayed development in infants who are exclusively breastfed. Apart from genetic causes, it can be related to a malabsorption syndrome or when the mother follows a strict vegetarian or vegan diet, causing a low hepatic storage of Vit-B12 in the infant at birth. As the neurological symptoms are nonspecific, a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam is usually performed to rule out primary causes of neurodevelopmental delay. Findings related to brain atrophy are usually observed. A favorable response is achieved with Vit-B12 therapy, and neurological symptoms dramatically improve within a few days afte…
Disorders of malnutrition among the Saharawi children
2011
It is first article that reviews the literature on the problem of disorders of malnutrition among Saharawi children. Most of the studies reveal problems mainly of celiac disease, goiter, geophagia, undernutrition, wasting, stunting, overweight, scurvy, rickets and iron-deficiency anaemia.
282 Ophtalmologic follow-up of diabetic patients managed by Gps or diabetologists: results of FOCUS survey
2011
ObjectiveTo describe the ophthalmological follow up and cardiologists-nephrologists’ involvements in diabetic patients managed by GPs or diabetologists.MethodsTransversal and observational survey conducted in 2009, by 1112 GPs and 188 specialists.Results2577 diabetic patients (T1D or T2D) have been included; 63% were males, and mean age was 62 years. Mean diabetes duration was 10 years. Most of them were hypertensive (72%), 68% had a dyslipidemia and 30% a non proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Nearly all patients have been followed by ophthalmologists (70% have been seen once a year). In patients having a diabetic retinopathy (DR), treatments have been intensified in 80% of them with a vis…
Nomenclature and diagnosis of gluten-related disorders: A position statement by the Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists and Endoscopi…
2017
Abstract Background “Gluten-related disorders” is a term that encompasses different diseases induced by the ingestion of gluten-containing food. Because of their incidence the scientific community has been intensively studying them. Aim To support gastroenterologists with a correct nomenclature and diagnostic approach to gluten-related disorders in adulthood. Methods The Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists and Endoscopists (AIGO) commissioned a panel of experts to prepare a position statement clarifying the nomenclature and diagnosis of gluten-related disorders, focusing on those of gastroenterological interest. Each member was assigned a task and levels of evidence/recommen…
A mother-child combination analysis for AB0-Hp interaction
1973
Tests for interaction between AB0 and Hp were performed in 1824 mother-child pairs. There was no significant difference in the Hp distribution between mothers and children. When the children were divided into AB0-compatible and AB0-incompatible with their mothers there was an excess of the Hp1 gene in the incompatible group. The results are discussed.
Academic skills in children with early-onset type 1 diabetes: the effects of diabetes-related risk factors
2012
Aim The study aimed to assess the effects of diabetes-related risk factors, especially severe hypoglycaemia, on the academic skills of children with early-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Method The study comprised 63 children with T1DM (31 females, 32 males; mean age 9y 11mo, SD 4mo) and 92 comparison children without diabetes (40 females, 52 males; mean age 9y 9mo, SD 3mo). Children were included if T1DM had been diagnosed before the age of 5 years and if they were aged between 9 and 10 years at the time of study. Children were not included if their native language was not Finnish and if they had a diagnosed neurological disorder that affected their cognitive development. Among th…
Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus—Does Quality of Life Impairment Always Reflect Health Danger?
2020
Background and aims: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) and diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM) may compromise the quality of life (QoL). We decided to compare the QoL of T1DM patients to those suffering from CSU. Materials and methods: Sixty-six patients with well-controlled T1DM (male 52%) in the mean age of (SD) 36.3 (11.09) years and 51 patients with CSU (male 33%) in the mean age of (SD) 35.8 (8.53) years were enrolled in this observational study. All the participants completed a Short-Form 36 (SF-36) QoL. Results: The QoL related to social functioning was significantly worse among CSU patients. There were differences related to gender found in the group of patients with T1DM&mdash
Clinical guidelines for diagnosing and managing ocular manifestations in children with mucopolysaccharidosis.
2011
The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare lysosomal storage disorders characterized by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in several tissues and organs. This accumulation results in an array of clinical manifestations and premature death in severe cases. Ocular problems are very common in children with MPS and may involve the cornea, sclera, trabecular meshwork, retina, optic nerve and also the posterior visual pathways. The aims of this study are to give an overview of ocular problems in MPS and to provide clinical guidelines for paediatric ophthalmologists for early diagnosis and management of ocular manifestations in children with MPS. Diagnostic problems may arise in child…
Statins and new-onset diabetes
2013
Statins are highly efficacious lipid modifying agents that reduce the risk for cardiovascular (CV) events in both primary and secondary prevention settings. However, statins affect molecular mechanisms which adversely impact on insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, thereby increasing risk for new onset diabetes mellitus (NOD). Defining the mechanisms involved is the focus of considerable current investigation. The statins reduce the risk for CV events in normoglycemic patients as well as in those with diabetes mellitus (DM) and their benefits outweigh the risk of inducing NOD. We review the clinical evidence for NOD with statin treatment, as well as the potential mechanisms involved. Our…
Changes induced by pravastatin treatment on hemostatic and fibrinolytic patterns in patients with type IIb hyperlipoproteinemia
1994
Abstract A randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study of pravastatin versus placebo was carried out for 24 weeks in 20 patients with type IIb primary hyperlipoproteinemia. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, blood glucose, apolipoproteins (apo) A1 and B, and lipoprotein (a) (Lp[a]) levels were determined. A venous occlusion test was also performed in all patients. Pre- and postvenous occlusion tests were determined: tissue plasminogen activator antigen (t-PA[Ag]), plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) activity, factor VII, fibrinogen, plasminogen, and hematocrit. Compared with placebo, pravastatin signi…
