<title>Hardening in LiF, induced by fast Kr and Ni ions, and recovery of the structure and properties under annealing</title>

2005

The recovery of optical and mechanical properties of LiF crystals irradiated with 790 MeV 78Kr and 640 MeV 58Ni ions at 10l2 ions/cm2 under annealing at temperatures up to 810 K is investigated. The optical absorbance and depth profiles of hardness before and after annealing were measured. A marked recovery of hardness and change in the optical absorption spectra were observed at temperatures above 520-530 K. An activation energy of 0.15±0.02eV, which is close to that for the thermal migration of H centers, is obtained from the annealing data. The results indicate a significant role of the H-center aggregates in the hardening and annealing processes. The maximum hardening is created and the…

Water absorption and hydrothermal ageing of epoxy adhesives reinforced with amino-functionalized graphene oxide nanoparticles

2021

Abstract The study is focused on quantitative characterization of water absorption and hydrothermal ageing effects in a room-temperature amine cured epoxy adhesive widely used in automotive, aerospace, construction, and marine industries. Amino-functionalized graphene oxide (mGO) nanoparticles were incorporated into the epoxy (up to 1.72 wt.%) enabled cross-linking reactions and providing high interfacial adhesion, superior reinforcement efficiency and enhanced resistance to hydrothermal ageing of nanocomposites. Anomalous water absorption accompanied by progressive weight loss of samples (down to 7%) is fitted by two-stage models considering additive and coupled contribution from water dif…

Electronic Absorption Spectra of HXeCl, HXeBr, HXeI, and HXeCN in Xe Matrix

2000

The electronic UV absorption spectra of thermal reaction products H−Xe−Y (Y= Cl, Br, I, or CN) have been measured in solid Xe at 12 K. The spectra are obtained after the annealing of an extensively...

Photochemical generation of E′ centres from Si–H in amorphous SiO2under pulsed ultraviolet laser radiation

2006

In situ optical absorption spectroscopy was used to study the generation of E' centres () in amorphous SiO2 occurring by photo-induced breaking of Si–H groups under 4.7 eV pulsed laser radiation. The dependence on laser intensity of the defect generation rate is consistent with a two-photon mechanism for Si–H rupture, while the growth and saturation of the defects are conditioned by their concurrent annealing due to a reaction with mobile hydrogen arising from the same precursor. A rate equation is proposed to model the kinetics of the defects and is tested on experimental data.

Effect of boron oxide on the microstructure of mullite-based glass-ceramic glazes for floor-tiles in the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system

2006

Abstract The effect of increasing replacement of Al2O3 by B2O3 in a parent glass on the sintering and further crystallization of mullite was investigated. The composition of the parent glass was chosen in the mullite primary phase field of the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 quaternary system. Glass powder pellets were heated under standard (10 °C/min and 2 h of hold time) and fast heatings (25 °C/min and 5 min of hold time) at different temperatures from 700 to 1190 °C. Sintering of B2O3-containing glasses took place in the range between 850 and 1050 °C. X-ray diffraction results showed that mullite formed as unique crystalline phase for glasses containing amounts of B2O3 larger than 6 wt%. For lower a…

Effects of post-growth annealing on structural and compositional properties of the Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al surface and its relevance for the surface electron…

2009

In this study we investigate the influence of post-growth annealing on different Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al samples. We find strong changes in the geometric surface structure as well as in the element specific concentrations during the annealing process. These irreversible changes go in hand with characteristic changes in the electron spin polarization (ESP) at the surface: as observed in Cinchetti et al (2007 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 40 1544), the iron buffered sample shows the largest spin polarization at the Fermi level. The latter remains positive as a consequence of the reduced density of states for the minority carriers due to the predicted minority gap, which can be clearly seen for all samples …

Chromated metal products may be hazardous to patients with chromate allergy.

2009

Background:  Hidden allergen exposure may contribute to persistence and relapse of chromate dermatitis. According to case reports, chromated metal products, such as screws, fittings, etc., may be relevant allergen sources for patients sensitized to chromate. Objectives:  To examine concomitant patch test reactivity to potassium dichromate 0.5% petrolatum (pet.) and three different types of chromated metal rings. Patients/Methods:  Patients with proven or suspected chromate allergy were patch tested with potassium dichromate 0.5% pet. and three different types of chromated metal rings (yellow, olive, and black). Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) release from the patch tested rings was chemically an…

Patch testing with components of water-based metalworking fluids

2003

Water-based metalworking fluids (MWFs) may cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Several well-known MWF allergens are available for patch testing, but considering the wide variety of possible components used in MWF, our diagnostic arsenal covers only a small part of potential allergens. We therefore selected 13 frequently used MWF components that might be sensitizers and had not yet been tested routinely. In 5 centres, 233 dermatitis patients with present or past occupational exposure to MWF were patch tested with this and other panels. Only 7 patients showed positive reactions to the study panel. Allergic reactions to the emulsifier diglycolamine [syn. 2-(2-aminoethoxy) etha…

Occupational exposure to metal-rich particulate matter modifies the expression of repair genes in foundry workers

2021

Foundry workers are exposed to numerous occupational health hazards, which may result in increased risk of cancer, respiratory disease, and other diseases. Oxidative stress is known to be involved in the pathogenesis of such diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the association between multiple occupational exposures in foundry workers and expression of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair genes as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage. The study sample comprised 17 foundry workers and 27 matched control subjects. Expression of 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase-1 (OGG1), inosine triphosphate pyrophosphate (ITPA), and MutT homolog 1 (MTH1) in peripheral blood was examined using the real-t…
