Plant Morphology: The Historic Concepts of Wilhelm Troll, Walter Zimmermann and Agnes Arber

2001

Recent molecular systematic and developmental genetic findings have drawn attention to plant morphology as a discipline dealing with the phenotypic appearance of plant forms. However, since different terms and conceptual frameworks have evolved over a period of more than 200 years, it is reasonable to survey the history of plant morphology; this is the first of two papers with this aim. The present paper deals with the historic concepts of Troll, Zimmermann and Arber, which are based on Goethe's morphology. Included are contrasting views of ‘unity and diversity’, ‘position and process’, and ‘morphology and phylogeny’, which, in part, are basic views of current plant morphology, phylogenetic…

The logic of forms in the light of developmental biology and palaeontology.

2010

11 pages; If you ask palaeontologists, and indeed anyone interested in the theory of evolution, for the key words that encapsulate it, you will obtain the following results: adaptation, natural selection, speciation, but also ontogeny and phylogeny. The first three key words apply to the future of the individual and by extension to the future of the species: we are therefore dealing with adults of a reproductive age. The two other key words concern (i) the evolution of the morphology from the egg to the adult (individual ontogeny: short timescale) and especially what goes on in the black box called embryogenesis, and (ii) the modification of ontogenetic sequences over time, resulting in cha…

Nuovo realismo e metodi di ricerca misti

2014

This article aims to expose the possible influence that the philosophy of José Ortega y Gasset exerted on the Spanish philosopher of the Republican exile Juan David García Bacca, in order to determine to what extent and, how, was key in the gestation of Bacca’s metaphysical project.

Metaontology

2015

[EN] The term «metaontology» applies to the inquiry on the nature of ontology. Although this type of inquiry has important precedents in the history of modern philosophy, in the last fifteen ye…

2020

This paper aims to establish precisely the scope of Pierre Bayle’s influence on the construction of Kant’s second antinomy of pure reason, since there is a remarkable parallelism between this second cosmological conflict and the argument against extension of the article “Zeno of Elea” of Bayle’s Dictionary. It is argued that Bayle, employing the skeptical method in metaphysical research, has a major influence on the construction of the main arguments of the second antinomy and sets a precedent for its logical solution.

Ancient Theories of Intellection

2013

Ancient philosophical schools shared the view that, in addition to perceptual capacities, human beings have reason. It was also generally supposed that reason is not to be understood solely as a capacity of inference, but that it must also have content (1). Such content was often taken to be general: as opposed to perception which deals with particulars, reasoning operates with general or universal features of reality. However, views diverged as to how or whether such contents are acquired and whether they rather pre-exist in the soul. Whereas the view according to which intelligible forms can be grasped by human reason was wide-spread in the Platonic-Aristotelian tradition, Hellenistic phi…
