Ikivėžinių skrandžio gleivinės pokyčių paplitimas Helicobacter pylori sukelto lėtinio gastrito metu tarp Rytų Europos (Lietuvos, Latvijos) ir Azijos …
2007
The aim of the study was to compare the prevalence and severity of precancerous condition – gastric atrophy and intestinal metaplasia (IM) between Eastern European (Lithuania and Latvia) and Asian (Taiwan) countries in population older than 55 years. Methods. Patients aged 55 years and older, referred for upper endoscopy due to dyspeptic symptoms, were included in the study. Gastric biopsies were histological investigated according modified Sydney classification. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) was detected if any two of three methods (urease test, histology, and serology) were positive. Results. Overall 322 patients included: 52 from Taiwan (TW), 171 from Latvia (LV) and 99 from Lithuania …
Management of epithelial precancerous conditions and lesions in the stomach (MAPS II): European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), Europea…
2019
Main RecommendationsPatients with chronic atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia (IM) are at risk for gastric adenocarcinoma. This underscores the importance of diagnosis and risk stratification for these patients. High definition endoscopy with chromoendoscopy (CE) is better than high definition white-light endoscopy alone for this purpose. Virtual CE can guide biopsies for staging atrophic and metaplastic changes and can target neoplastic lesions. Biopsies should be taken from at least two topographic sites (antrum and corpus) and labelled in two separate vials. For patients with mild to moderate atrophy restricted to the antrum there is no evidence to recommend surveillance. In pati…
CD1a immunopositivity could help to address prognosis of intestinal-type Barrett's metaplasia

Keratin 7 expression as an early marker of reflux-related columnar mucosa without intestinal metaplasia in the esophagus
2009
BACKGROUND: The role of Barrett esophagus in carcinogenesis is widely accepted, but the significance of esophageal columnar mucosa without histological intestinal metaplasia, known as columnar-lined esophagus, is debated. MATERIAL/METHODS: We studied 128 patients free of Helicobacter pylori with reflux-related symptoms and columnar mucosa in the esophagus at endoscopy, 106 patients with Barrett esophagus (referred to as the Barrett group) and 22 patients without intestinal metaplasia (columnar group). Samples from 20 subjects free of H. pylori were used as controls. Immunostaining for keratin 7 (KRT7), keratin 20 (KRT20), caudal type homeobox 2 (CDX2), mucin 2, oligomeric mucus/gel-forming …
Kalanchoe pinnata inhibits mast cell activation and prevents allergic airway disease
2011
Aqueous extract of Kalanchoe pinnata (Kp) have been found effective in models to reduce acute anaphylactic reactions. In the present study, we investigate the effect of Kp and the flavonoid quercetin (QE) and quercitrin (QI) on mast cell activation in vitro and in a model of allergic airway disease in vivo. Treatment with Kp and QE in vitro inhibited degranulation and cytokine production of bone marrow-derived mast cells following IgE/FcɛRI crosslinking, whereas treatment with QI had no effect. Similarly, in vivo treatment with Kp and QE decreased development of airway hyperresponsiveness, airway inflammation, goblet cell metaplasia and production of IL-5, IL-13 and TNF. In contrast, treatm…
Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy in patients with cirrhosis: Extending the range of detection beyond portal hypertension
2010
Background: Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy is currently recommended for the screening of varices in cirrhosis. In addition to the assessment of varices, oesophagogastroduodenoscopy can detect conditions that, while unrelated to portal hypertension, may require treatment. Aims: We evaluated in a large cohort of cirrhotic patients the prevalence of upper digestive findings other than oesophagogastric varices, the associations between upper gastrointestinal findings, portal hypertension and features of cirrhosis, and the incidence of new lesions in the course of a surveillance program. Methods: Analysis of the records of 611 consecutive cirrhotic patients undergoing oesophagogastroduodenoscopy fo…
The canonical but not the noncanonical wnt pathway inhibits the development of allergic airway disease
2018
Abstract Asthma is a syndrome with multifactorial causes, resulting in a variety of different phenotypes. Current treatment options are not curative and are sometimes ineffective in certain disease phenotypes. Therefore, novel therapeutic approaches are required. Recent findings have shown that activation of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway suppresses the development of allergic airway disease. In contrast, the effect of the noncanonical Wnt signaling pathway activation on allergic airway disease is not well described. The aim of this study was to validate the therapeutic effectiveness of Wnt-1–driven canonical Wnt signaling compared with Wnt-5a–driven noncanonical signaling in murine mo…
Expression of keratin 5 as a distinctive feature of epithelial and biphasic mesotheliomas. An immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibody AE1…
1989
In previous biochemical analyses, keratin 5 (Mr 58,000) has been detected in most mesotheliomas with epithelial component but not in pulmonary adenocarcinomas (Blobel et al., Am J Pathol 121: 235-247, 1985). In the present study, we have characterized a monoclonal antibody, AE14, as being selectively specific for keratin 5 (apart from the reactivity with certain hair proteins) as shown by immunoblotting of gel-electrophoretically separated proteins from various tissues. Immunohistochemical screening of a variety of normal human tissues, using immunoperoxidase microscopy on cryostat sections, revealed the binding of this antibody to the basal, immature cells of stratified squamous epithelia,…
Local barrier dysfunction identified by confocal laser endomicroscopy predicts relapse in inflammatory bowel disease
2011
Objectives: Loss of intestinal barrier function plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Shedding of intestinal epithelial cells is a potential cause of barrier loss during inflammation. The objectives of the study were (1) to determine whether cell shedding and barrier loss in humans can be detected by confocal endomicroscopy and (2) whether these parameters predict relapse of IBD. Methods: Confocal endomicroscopy was performed in IBD and control patients using intravenous fluorescein to determine the relationship between cell shedding and local barrier dysfunction. A grading system based on appearances at confocal endomicroscopy in humans was devise…
Analysis of tissue and circulating microRNA expression during metaplastic transformation of the esophagus
2016
Genetic changes involved in the metaplastic progression from squamous esophageal mucosa toward Barrett's metaplasia and adenocarcinoma are almost unknown. Several evidences suggest that some miRNAs are differentially expressed in Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Among these, miR-143, miR-145, miR-194, miR-203, miR-205, miR-215 appear to have a key role in metaplasia and neoplastic progression. The aim of this study was to analyze deregulated miRNAs in serum and esophageal mucosal tissue biopsies to identify new biomarkers that could be associated with different stages of esophageal disease. Esophageal mucosal tissue biopsies and blood samples were collected and analyz…
