Ewing’s Sarcoma Family of Tumors

Ewing’s sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) is a family of small round cell sarcomas with specific molecular alterations showing a spectrum of neuroectodermal differentiation. There is a slightly greater incidence in males than females. The first two decades of life account for 80 % of patients (age at diagnosis ranges from 13 to 19 years), being more uncommon in adults and elderly patients and more frequent in white (Caucasian) people.

To better understand the relationship between tumor heterogeneity, differentiation, and metastasis, suitable experimental models permitting in vitro and in vivo studies are necessary. A new variant cell line (T84SF) exhibiting an altered phenotype was recently selected from a colon cancer cell line (T84) by repetitive plating on TNF-alpha treated human endothelial cells and subsequent selection for adherent cells. The matched pair of cell lines provides a useful system to investigate the extravasation step of the metastatic cascade. Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare superficial tumor characterized by high rates of local recurrence and low risk of metastasis. DFSP occurs most commonly on the trunk and proximal extremities, affects all races, and often develops between the second and fifth decade of life. The tumor grows slowly, typically over years. Histologically, several variants of DFSP have been described and should be well characterized to avoid misdiagnosis with other tumors. Abstract We aimed to assess the thermal profile and size of iceballs produced by Accuprobe cryoprobes in fresh porcine and human liver and human colorectal cancer liver metastases in vitro to allow better planning of cryosurgical treatment of liver metastases. Iceballs were produced by a 20-min single freeze cycle using 8-mm cryoprobes in pig liver in a waterbath at 37°C ( n = 8) and 3-mm cryoprobes in pig liver ( n = 8), human liver ( n = 3), and human colorectal cancer liver metastases ( n = 8). Tumour-cell-endothelial interactions: free radicals are mediators of melanoma-induced endothelial cell damage

Damage to vascular endothelium may play an important role during metastasis. We used a three-dimensional model of tumour cell extravasation to test the hypothesis that certain types of tumour cells are able to induce vascular endothelial cell injury. Multicellular tumour spheroids (MCTS) of 14 human cancer cell lines and spheroids from two benign cell lines were transferred onto confluent monolayers of human endothelial cells (EC). MCTS from 4 of 7 melanoma cell lines induced damage of the endothelium which was closely associated with tumour cell attachment. Bone metastasis develops in 30% of all patients with renal cell carcinoma. We elucidated the mechanisms that lead to and predict bone metastasis of renal cell carcinoma.Nine renal cell carcinoma primary cell lines and 30 renal cell carcinoma tissue specimens (normal and tumor tissue) were collected from 3 patients with no metastasis and 10 with lung or bone metastasis within 5 years after nephrectomy. Vaginal Metastasis from Renal Cell Carcinoma: The Role of Electron Microscopy

A case of vaginal metastasis from a renal cell carcinoma is reported. This rare localization is often the first clue leading to the diagnosis of an occult renal adenocarcinoma. The role of electron microscopy is emphasized, since the histologic aspect of the lesion is similar to that of a primary vaginal mesonephric adenocarcinoma.

Among them, osteopontin (OPN) has been largely involved in tumor progression and metastasis.
