Cathepsin D activity levels in colorectal cancer: Correlation with cathepsin B and L and other biological and clinical parameters
1994
Cathepsin D, B and L activity levels were determined in colorectal cancer and correlated with a number of biological and clinical parameters. Our studies have evidenced significant higher activity levels of these lysosomal enzymes in tumor cytosol compared to paired normal mucosa as well as an evident increase of tumor specific cathepsin D activity in Dukes' stage A tumors compared to later stages (B, C and D). Furthermore, significant higher cathepsin B and L activity levels were observed in Dukes' stage A compared to Dukes' stage D tumors while significant higher cathepsin B activity levels were observed in tumors ≤5 cm than in those >5 cm as well as in moderately differentiated tumors…
Cathepsin D Content in Colorectal Cancer
1995
Cathepsin D content and activity were determined in matched paired sets of colorectal tumor tissue and normal mucosa and correlated with a number of biological and clinical parameters. Significantly higher cathepsin D activity was measured in tumor cytosol compared to paired normal mucosa (p < 0.02), in Dukes’ stage A tumors compared to Dukes’ B and C (p < 0.05), in tumors < 5 cm compared to those > 5 cm, or in tumors with a low proliferation rate compared to those with a high proliferation rate (p < 0.05). Moreover, significant differences in enzyme activity between tumor tissue and paired normal mucosa were observed in node-positive and G2 tumors (p < 0.05). No significa…
Langzeitverlauf 10 Jahre nach transpupillarer Thermotherapie (TTT) kleiner, posteriorer maligner Aderhautmelanome
2011
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for small malignant choroidal melanomas. Patients and methods In the time period 1/1998 to 10/1999 in a prospective non-randomised analysis 26 eyes with small malignant melanomas (located posterior to the equator with base ≤ 12 and thickness ≤ 4.5 mm) were primary treated with the TTT standard protocol (follow-up over a time span of at least 10 years). Results Thirteen women and thirteen men (mean age: 64 years) underwent TTT. The mean preoperative tumour thickness was 2.45 mm (0.8 - 4.5 mm). Ten years postoperatively tumour regression without recurrence after 1.4 treatment sessions …
Violet Diode Laser in Time-Resolved Stored-Ion Spectroscopy
2004
Lifetime measurements of the metastable 3d D-2(3/2) level in singly charged calcium were performed using the newly developed violet diode laser operated in an external cavity arrangement. The laser was employed on stored ions at the CRYRING facility to optically pump the resonance line at 397 nm. In combination with laser probing at 866 nm this detection scheme gave the possibility to record the lifetime of this level. which has a radiative lifetime of about 1 s.
Laparoscopic lymph node dissection should be performed before fertility preserving treatment of patients with cervical cancer
2012
Objective: The aim of this study is to assess our results of treatment of women with stage I cervical cancer > 2 cm in diameter seeking fertility preservation. Treatment consisted of Laparoscopic Pelvic and Paraaortic Lymphadenectomy (LPPLND), and when no nodal metastasis was detected, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT). Patients with positive lymph nodes underwent primary chemoradiation. Methods: A cohort of women younger than 40 years of age with stage I disease > 2 cm who underwent LPPLND and either NACT and RVT or chemoradiation. Oncological outcome was evaluated prospectively. Results: Eighteen women were eligible for this study. Twelve (67%…
Infrequent promoter methylation of the MGMT gene in liver metastases from uveal melanoma.
2008
Uveal melanoma is associated with a high mortality rate once metastases occur, with over >90% of metastatic patients dying within less than 1 year from metastases to the liver. The intraarterial hepatic (iah) administration of the alkylating agent fotemustine holds some promise with response rates of 36% and median survival of 15 months. Here, we investigated whether the DNA-repair-protein MGMT may be involved in the variability of response to fotemustine and temozolomide in uveal melanoma. Epigenetic inactivation of MGMT has been demonstrated to be a predictive marker for benefit from alkylating agent therapy in glioblastoma. We found a methylated MGMT promoter in 6% of liver metastases fr…
Methylation status of VTRNA2-1/nc886 is stable across populations, monozygotic twin pairs and in majority of tissues.
2022
Aims & methods: The aim of this study was to characterize the methylation level of a polymorphically imprinted gene, VTRNA2-1/nc886, in human populations and somatic tissues.48 datasets, consisting of more than 30 tissues and >30,000 individuals, were used. Results: nc886 methylation status is associated with twin status and ethnic background, but the variation between populations is limited. Monozygotic twin pairs present concordant methylation, whereas similar to 30% of dizygotic twin pairs present discordant methylation in the nc886 locus. The methylation levels of nc886 are uniform across somatic tissues, except in cerebellum and skeletal muscle. Conclusion: The nc886 imprint may be est…
Crises and Social Media: A Metastudy on Pertinent Research and Practice
2014
Aiming to structure the academic debate and to demonstrate practical use cases of social media in crisis communication, we present in this metastudy the disciplinary embedment, topical foci, challenges, and research gaps in the literature and application of social media in crisis communication. In particular, our research questions address the characteristics and features of the academic discourse and examine the role of grant givers in steering research foci, as well as the value of research outcomes for crisis communication practice. Therefore, we analyze pertinent academic articles and research projects from the past decade and provide an excursus on the actors and social media communica…
An Open-Label Phase II Study Evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of Ramucirumab Combined With mFOLFOX-6 as First-Line Therapy for Metastatic Colorecta…
2014
Abstract Author Summary Background. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) are believed to mediate angiogenesis in colorectal cancer (CRC). Ramucirumab (RAM; IMC-1121B) is a human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that inhibits VEGF ligand binding to VEGFR-2, inhibiting VEGFR-2 activation and signaling. Methods. Patients with metastatic CRC, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0–1, and adequate organ function who had not received chemotherapy for metastatic disease received RAM and the modified FOLFOX-6 regimen every 2 weeks. Endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate, overall survival, and safety. The sample size wa…
The waiting time for prostate cancer treatment in Italy: analysis from the PROS-IT CNR Study.
2022
Background Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common neoplasm in male patients. To date, there's no certain indication about the maximum waiting time (WT) acceptable for treatment beginning and the impact on oncological and functional outcomes has not been well established. Methods Data from the National Research Council PCa monitoring multicenter project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) were prospectively collected and analyzed. WT was defined as the time from the bioptical diagnosis of PCa to the first treatment received. Patients were divided in two groups, using a time frame of 90 days. Quality of life was measured through the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Pros…
