The Role of Palliative Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Spinal Bone Metastases from Head and Neck Tumors-A Multicenter Analysis of a Rare Event.

2020

This retrospective multi-center analysis aimed to assess the clinical response and stabilizing effects of palliative radiotherapy (RT) for spinal bone metastases (SBM) in head and neck cancer (HNC), and to establish potential predictive factors for stability and overall survival (OS). Patients included in this analysis were treated at the University Hospitals of Mainz, Freiburg, and Heidelberg between 2001 and 2019. Clinical information was taken from the medical records. The stability of affected vertebral bodies was assessed according to the validated spine instability neoplastic score (SINS) based on CT-imaging before RT, as well as 3 and 6 months after RT. OS was quantified as the time …

Bedeutung der Ganzkörper-Skelettszintigraphie im Rahmen des Staging von Malignomen im HNO-Bereich*

1992

Concerning malignant tumours of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, bone metastases are in general rarely seen. For the specification to which patients the whole body bone scintigraphy as detection method should be applied, the findings of 370 patients were analysed retrospectively. In respect of primary staging, bone metastases could be found by scintigraphy in only 1.4% of the patients. On the other hand, there was a detection rate of 12% during the further course of the disease, especially in case of clinical symptoms pointing at spreading metastases or in tumour recurrences. Nevertheless, positive scan findings which were not due to metastases could be found in both groups with equal f…

Bone metastases in soft tissue sarcoma: a survey of natural history, prognostic value and treatment options

2013

Abstract Background We surveyed the natural history of bone metastases in patients affected by soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Methods This multicenter retrospective observational study included 135 patients. Histological subtype, characteristics of bone metastases, treatment, skeletal related events (SREs) and disease outcome were recorded. Results The most represented histological subtypes were leiomyosarcoma (27%) angiosarcoma (13%) and undifferentiated sarcoma (8%). Axial skeleton was the most common site for bone involvement (70%). In 27% of cases, bone metastases were present at the time of diagnosis. Fifty-four (40%) patients developed SREs and the median time to first SRE was 4 months (r…

Characterizing the Invasive Tumor Front of Aggressive Uterine Adenocarcinoma and Leiomyosarcoma

2021

The invasive tumor front (the tumor–host interface) is vitally important in malignant cell progression and metastasis. Tumor cell interactions with resident and infiltrating host cells and with the surrounding extracellular matrix and secreted factors ultimately determine the fate of the tumor. Herein we focus on the invasive tumor front, making an in-depth characterization of reticular fiber scaffolding, infiltrating immune cells, gene expression, and epigenetic profiles of classified aggressive primary uterine adenocarcinomas (24 patients) and leiomyosarcomas (11 patients). Sections of formalin-fixed samples before and after microdissection were scanned and studied. Reticular fiber archit…

Increased expression of leptin and the leptin receptor as a marker of breast cancer progression: possible role of obesity-related stimuli.

2006

Abstract Purpose: Recent in vitro studies suggested that the autocrine leptin loop might contribute to breast cancer development by enhancing cell growth and survival. To evaluate whether the leptin system could become a target in breast cancer therapy, we examined the expression of leptin and its receptor (ObR) in primary and metastatic breast cancer and noncancer mammary epithelium. We also studied whether the expression of leptin/ObR in breast cancer can be induced by obesity-related stimuli, such as elevated levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), estradiol, or hypoxic conditions. Experimental Design: The expression of leptin and ObR was examined by immunohistochemistry…

Differentiation between Brain Metastasis and Glioblastoma using MRI and two-dimensional Turbo Spectroscopic Imaging data

2009

In this paper we propose a novel technique to differentiate brain metastases from high-grade gliomas, which represent the most aggressive and common brain lesions. In spite of the significant progresses achieved in the field of MRI in the last decades, the differentiation between these two types of tumors is still a challenge as they show a similar appearance on MRI images, but require a completely different therapeutic treatment. Here, we show that such a differentiation is actually possible and can be obtained by making use of MRI as well as of two-dimensional Turbo Spectroscopic Imaging (2D-TSI) information. Specifically, the proposed technique consists of three steps: we first detect th…

Geochemical characteristics of Cretaceous carbonatites from Angola

1999

Abstract The Early Cretaceous (138–130 Ma) carbonatites and associated alkaline rocks of Angola belong to the Parana-Angola-Etendeka Province and occur as ring complexes and other central-type intrusions along northeast trending tectonic lineaments, parallel to the trend of coeval Namibian alkaline complexes. Most of the Angolan carbonatite-alkaline bodies are located along the apical part of the Mocamedes Arch, a structure representing the African counterpart of the Ponta Grossa Arch in southern Brazil, where several alkaline-carbonatite complexes were also emplaced in the Early Cretaceous. Geochemical and isotopic (C, 0, Sr and Nd) characteristics determined for five carbonatitic occurren…

ABSTRACT Genit…
