One of the devices that uses renewable energy sources is a fuel cell (FC). The fuel cell can be powered by hydrogen, methanol, hydrazine or other substrates. Synthesis highly active platinum tri-metallic electrocatalysts using "one-step" organometallic chemical vapour deposition technique for methanol oxid…

A simple solvent free method for the synthesis of tri-metallic platinum electrocatalysts on carbon nanotubes is presented. By investigating the platinum alloy electrocatalysts, it was showed that the additional metals of platinum alloys could reduce the metal particle sizes and produce larger chemical-active surface area, as well as the higher methanol oxidation activity of the catalysts. The organometallic chemical vapour deposition method was successfully applied to produce multiple samples of PtRuFe, PtRuCu and PtRuV. The electrocatalysts were characterized by ICP, XRD, HRTEM and the catalytic activity was determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV).

Cerium-Doped Copper(II) Oxide Hollow Nanostructures as Efficient and Tunable Sensors for Volatile Organic Compounds

Tuning sensing capabilities of simple to complex oxides for achieving enhanced sensitivity and selectivity toward the detection of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is extremely important and remains a challenge. In the present work, we report the synthesis of pristine and Ce-doped CuO hollow nanostructures, which have much higher VOC sensing and response characteristics than their solid analogues. Undoped CuO hollow nanostructures exhibit high response for sensing of acetone as compared to commercial CuO nanoparticles. As a result of doping with cerium, the material starts showing selectivity. This paper reports on research aiming at developing sustainable processes for the production of methanol (CH3OH) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC, (CH3)2CO3) using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a raw material. Using carbon dioxide as a raw material has several advantages; it is non-toxic, in abundant supply, and promises innovative routes to the production of commodity chemicals. Antibacterial activity and HPLC analysis of extracts from Mediterranean brown algae

The antibacterial activity of methanolic extracts of eight Mediterranean brown algae belonging to the genera Cystoseira sensu lato, Dictyopteris and Padina was investigated. Extracts from Sargassaceae showed antibacterial activity. Specifically, Carpodesmia crinita and Carpodesmia brachycarpa extracts inhibited the growth of the Gram-positive strain Kocuria rhizophila whereas Cystoseira compressa and Carpodesmia amentacea extracts showed antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive strains, Kocuria rhizophila and Staphylococcus aureus. The binuclear title complex, [Zn2(C33H33N6O)(CH3COO2)(CH3OH)](ClO4)2, was synthesized by the reaction between 2,6-bis({[bis(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]amino}methyl)-4-methylphenol (H-BPMP), Zn(OAc)2and NaClO4. The two ZnIIions are bridged by the phenolate O atom of the octadentate ligand and the acetate group. An additional methanol ligand is terminally coordinated to one of the ZnIIions, rendering the whole structure unsymmetric. Other symmetric dizinc complexes of BPMP have been reported. Photoinduced functionalization of diterpenes: transformation of the C-20 methyl of atractyligenin into a carbomethoxymethyl or carbamoylmethyl group

Abstract Irradiation of the nor-diterpene atractyligenin 1a and of its methyl ester 1b at λ=254 nm in methanol or in methanol in the presence of nitrogen nucleophiles such as ammonia or methylamine gave, besides the decarboxylation product 2, the ester 3a or the amides 3b, 3c, respectively, providing the transformation of the C-20 angular methyl into a carbomethoxymethyl or carbamoylmethyl group. A photochemical pathway involves formation of C-19/C-20 bond in the excited state, followed by a collapse into a ketene intermediate which will capture the nucleophilic reagent.

Methylacidimicrobium thermophilum AP8, a Novel Methane- and Hydrogen-Oxidizing Bacterium Isolated From Volcanic Soil on Pantelleria Island, Italy

The Favara Grande is a geothermal area located on Pantelleria Island, Italy. The area is characterized high temperatures in the top layer of the soil (60°C), low pH (3–5) and hydrothermal gas emissions mainly composed of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and hydrogen (H2). These geothermal features may provide a suitable niche for the growth of chemolithotrophic thermoacidophiles, including the lanthanide-dependent methanotrophs of the phylum Verrucomicrobia. Metagenome Assembled Genome of a Novel Verrucomicrobial Methanotroph From Pantelleria Island.

Verrucomicrobial methanotrophs are a group of aerobic bacteria isolated from volcanic environments. They are acidophiles, characterized by the presence of a particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) and a XoxF-type methanol dehydrogenase (MDH). Metagenomic analysis of DNA extracted from the soil of Favara Grande, a geothermal area on Pantelleria Island, Italy, revealed the presence of two verrucomicrobial Metagenome Assembled Genomes (MAGs). One of these MAGs did not phylogenetically classify within any existing genus.
