Maximum Displacement Variability of Stochastic Structures Subject to Deterministic Earthquake Loading

1998

The variability of the maximum response displacement of random frame structures under deterministic earthquake loading are examined in this paper using stochastic finite element techniques. The elastic modulus and the mass density are assumed to be described by cross-correlated stochastic fields. Specifically, a variability response function formulation is used for this problem, which allows for calculation of spectral-distribution-free upper bounds of the maximum displacement variance. Further, under the assumption of prespecified correlation functions describing the spatial variation of the material properties, variability response functions are used to calculate the corresponding maximum…

Stochastic seismic analysis of offshore towers

1984

After a brief review of the main problems and the most common analysis methods for offshore structures, a method of analysis for offshore towers submerged in water and subjected to strong earthquake motions is proposed. Nonlinear drag effects as well as random non-stationary seismic excitations are considered by means of a linearization technique based on a particular step-by-step procedure. Using a discrete lumped-mass model, the standard deviations of nodal displacements and velocities are evaluated. The probability of not exceeding a defined threshold of nodal displacements is also computed.

TH-C-AUD A-07: Evaluation of the Correction Factor Due to the Lack of Full Scatter Conditions in Cs-137 and Ir-192 Brachytherapy Dosimetric Studies

2008

Purpose: Use of a finite phantom to derive dose rate distributions around brachytherapysources implies a lack of backscattering material near the phantom periphery. Conventional planning algorithms and newly‐developed 3D correction algorithms are based on physics data under full scatter conditions. Presently, most published Monte Carlodosimetric studies have been obtained using either a spherical phantom (15cm in radius) or a cylinder phantom (40×40cm2). The study objective was to derive a simple relationship to correlate the radial dose function, g(r), obtained for each one of these phantoms to that obtained for an unbounded phantom. Method and Materials: Assuming bare point sources of 137…

A Rule-Based Method to Model Myocardial Fiber Orientation for Simulating Ventricular Outflow Tract Arrhythmias

2017

Comunicació presentada a: FIMH 2017 9th International Conference, celebrada a Toronto, Canadà, de l'11 al 13 de juny de 2017. Myocardial fiber orientation determines the propagation of electrical waves in the heart and the contraction of cardiac tissue. One common approach for assigning fiber orientation to cardiac anatomi- cal models are Rule-Based Methods (RBM). However, RBM have been developed to assimilate data mostly from the Left Ventricle. In conse- quence, fiber information from RBM does not match with histological data in other areas of the heart, having a negative impact in cardiac simulations beyond the LV. In this work, we present a RBM where fiber orientation is separately mode…

An algorithm for earthquakes clustering based on maximum likelihood

2007

In this paper we propose a clustering technique set up to separate and find out the two main components of seismicity: the background seismicity and the triggered one. We suppose that a seismic catalogue is the realization of a non homogeneous space-time Poisson clustered process, with a different parametrization for the intensity function of the Poisson-type component and of the clustered (triggered) component. The method here proposed assigns each earthquake to the cluster of earthquakes, or to the set of independent events, according to the increment to the likelihood function, computed using the conditional intensity function estimated by maximum likelihood methods and iteratively chang…

Semi-Supervised Remote Sensing Image Classification based on Clustering and the Mean Map Kernel

2008

This paper presents a semi-supervised classifier based on the combination of the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for Gaussian mixture models (GMM) and the mean map kernel. The proposed method uses the most reliable samples in terms of maximum likelihood to compute a kernel function that accurately reflects the similarity between clusters in the kernel space. The proposed method improves classification accuracy in situations where the available labeled information does not properly describe the classes in the test image.

Optical flow estimation from multichannel spherical image decomposition

2011

The problem of optical flow estimation is largely discussed in computer vision domain for perspective images. It was also proven that, in terms of optical flow analysis from these images, we have difficulty distinguishing between some motion fields obtained with little camera motion. The omnidirectional cameras provided images with large filed of view. These images contain global information about motion and allow to remove the ambiguity present in perspective case. Nevertheless, these images contain significant radial distortions that is necessary to take into account when treating these images to estimate the motion. In this paper, we shall describe new way to compute efficient optical fl…

OWN AND OTHER: CONTENT AND METHODOLOGY OF TRADITIONAL CULTURE IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

2017

At the given moment, the traditional exists in a post-functional situation – many traditions are not getting inherited from generation to generation. If traditions are not transferred by acknowledging the old ones and by expressing them anew – they simply disappear. The freedom of a person to “carry out” his or her affiliation to a certain cultural space gets endangered. How can it be possible to strengthen one’s local, Latgalian cultural capital by learning and comprising the traditions of other regions of Latvia? The aim of the study is to draw attention to the issue of learning the traditional culture within the margins of primary education in regions of Latvia, including Latgale by actu…

Estimation of Electrical Pathways Finding Minimal Cost Paths from Electro-Anatomical Mapping of the Left Ventricle

2014

The electrical activation of the heart is a complex physiological process that is essential for the understanding of several cardiac dysfunctions, such as ventricular tachycardia VT. Nowadays, electro-anatomical mappings of patient-specific activation times on the left ventricle surface can be estimated, providing crucial information to the clinicians for guiding cardiac treatment. However, some electrical pathways of particular interest such as Purkinje or still viable conduction channels are difficult to interpret in these maps. We present here a novel method to find some of these electrical pathways using minimal cost paths computations on surface maps. Experiments to validate the propos…

Miejsce międzypokoleniowego uczenia się w procesie hominizacji

2016

This article presents the results of a pilot and exploration study. The main objective of the research was to investigate the differences of intergenerational learning in the process of hominisation. For the purpose of the study the author used the quantitative strategy of research and author’s instrument of measurement. In the study participated 50 adult respondents from province opolskie. The research in question combines in a way such fields of knowledge as anthropology, pedagogics and psychology; the aim of the combination is to explore the processes which support the development of a human being in light of andragogy. Two conceptions have constituted the theoretical and methodological …
