Monte Carlo simulation of the glass transition in polymeric systems: Recent developments

1995

Abstract The bond fluctuation model on square and s.c. lattices is used as a coarse-grained model for flexible polymers in dense melts. Using an energy that favours long bonds, a conflict is created between the tendency of the bonds to stretch at low temperatures and packing constraints. This simple concept of ‘geometric frustration’ leads to glass transition. Both static and dynamic properties of this model are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations, paying attention to effects found by varying the cooling rate and the chain length N of the polymers. In two and three spatial dimensions an effective (cooling-rate dependent) glass transition temperature T g can be defined, where the system …

Adsorption-induced polymer translocation through a nanopore: a Monte Carlo investigation

2005

Abstract We study the translocation of a coarse-grained flexible polymer through a nanopore in a membrane induced by its adsorption on the trans side of the membrane. Dramatic differences in the threading behavior are observed if the adhesion to the membrane wall, e w , is below or above the adsorption threshold e c r . For e w e c r (weak adsorption) the activation barrier for translocation is at c cis 0 ≈ N / 2 (in terms of the fraction of chain c cis = N cis / N before the pore), independent of chain length N. For e w > e c r this barrier is at a constant (vanishing) number of passed trans monomers for all N. The mean time of chain passage τ trans ∝ c cis 1.3 when c cis c cis 0 . It scal…

Predominance of 2-arylhydrazones of 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,2,3-trione over its proton-transfer products

2001

2-Phenylhydrazones of 1,3-diphenyl-1,2,3-trione are the dominant tautomeric form detected in chloroform solution by 15N NMR chemical shifts. The substituent in the phenylhydrazone moiety does not affect this tautomeric preference. The substituent effect is transmitted effectively only to the hydrazone nitrogen and hydrogen atoms. Ab initio calculations show that the ketohydrazone tautomer is really very much favoured over its proton-transfer products in chloroform solution. The same tautomer was also detected in the crystal state by X-ray crystallography. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of constrained enantiomeric β-amino acid derivatives

2008

Abstract Chlorosulfonyl isocyanate addition to (−)- and (+)-apopinene furnished monoterpene-fused β-lactams in highly regio- and stereospecific reactions. β-Lactams 5 and 13 exhibited reactivities similar to those of the cycloalkane-fused analogs and were easily converted to the β-amino acid and its protected derivatives. The base-catalyzed isomerization of the cis -amino ester afforded the corresponding trans -amino acid enantiomers in excellent yields. The complete isomerization is explained by the stability difference, which was estimated by ab initio calculations between the cis- and trans -diastereomers.

Influence of the presence of surfactants and humic acid in waters on the indophenol-type reaction method for ammonium determination.

2005

Abstract This work has evaluated the influence of humic acid and/or surfactants in the quantification of ammonium in waters with the indophenol-type reaction method. Thymol has been employed with the colorimetric method for sample ammonium concentrations between 0.25 and 1 mg L −1 . In addition, SPE/diffuse reflectance method has been used for quantification of ammonium at low concentrations (between 0.025 and 0.25 mg L −1 ). Matrix effect owing to humic substances were observed with the colorimetric method when the concentration was equal or higher than 25 mg L −1 . Lower concentrations of humic compounds produced matrix effects with the more sensitive SPE/diffuse reflectance method. Gener…

Characterization of commercial synthetic resins by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: application to modern art and conservation.

2009

To characterize a set of synthetic resins, a methodology by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) has been developed. The studied reference materials were commercial versions of a wide range of synthetic resins. For each polymer, the pyrolytic and chromatographic conditions were optimized to adequately resolve the fragment mixture in a short time. The proposed analytical method does not require previous treatment of the sample, and due to its high sensitivity, only a small sample quantity in the microgram range can be used. The pyrolysis temperature was found to have little effect on the obtained pyrograms. The summarized data set for the individual polymer materials, es…

New Tools for Streamlined In Vivo Homing Peptide Identification

2021

In vivo peptide-phage display is an unbiased technique for mapping of the vascular diversity and identification of homing peptides. This chapter is intended to serve as a structured practical guide to execute in vivo T7 phage biopanning and data analysis experiments. We discuss experimental designs and protocols with emphasis on application of high-throughput sequencing-based technologies for streamlined in vivo biopanning and validation of homing peptides.

A slow process in confined polymer melts: layer exchange dynamics at a polymer solid interface

2010

Employing Molecular Dynamics simulations of a chemically realistic model of 1,4-polybutadiene between graphite walls we show that the mass exchange between layers close to the walls is a slow process already in the melt state. For the glass transition of confined polymers this process competes with the slowing down due to packing effects and intramolecular rotation barriers.

Surface anchoring on liquid crystalline polymer brushes

2002

We present a Monte Carlo study of the surface anchoring of a nematic fluid on swollen layers of grafted liquid crystalline chain molecules. The liquid crystalline particles are modeled by soft repulsive ellipsoids, and the chains are made of the same particles. An appropriately modified version of the configurational bias Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced, which removes and redistributes chain bonds rather than whole monomers. With this algorithm, a wide range of grafting densities could be studied. The substrate is chosen such that it favors a planar orientation (parallel to the surface). Depending on the grafting density, we find three anchoring regimes: planar, tilted, and perpendicula…
