Live imaging of developmental processes in a living meristem of Davidia involucrata (Nyssaceae).
2014
Morphogenesis in plants is usually reconstructed by scanning electron microscopy and histology of meristematic structures. These techniques are destructive and require many samples to obtain a consecutive series of states. Unfortunately, using this methodology the absolute timing of growth and complete relative initiation of organs remain obscure. To overcome this limitation, an in vivo observational method based on Epi-Illumination Light Microscopy (ELM) was developed and tested with a male inflorescence meristem (floral unit) of the handkerchief tree Davidia involucrata Baill. (Nyssaceae). We asked whether the most basal flowers of this floral unit arise in a basipetal sequence or, altern…
Memory-Efficient Sliding Window Progressive Meshes
2007
Progressive mesh is a data structure that encodes a continuous spectrum of mesh approximations. Sliding window progressive meshes (SWPM) minimize data transfers between CPU and GPU by storing mesh data in static on-GPU memory buffers [For01]. The main disadvantages of the original SWPM algorithm are poor vertex cache usage efficiency, and big resulting datasets. Connectivity-based algorithm [KT04] achieves a good vertex cache coherence but it does not address the problem of high memory utilization. In this paper, we describe estimates for the size of memory buffers, and describe methods to reduce the index datasets. We achieve 20% reduction due to the use hierarchical data structures (clust…
Statements About the Pervasiveness of Behavior Require Data About the Pervasiveness of Behavior
2020
Despite recent close attention to issues related to the reliability of psychological research (e.g., the replication crisis), issues of the validity of this research have not been considered to the same extent. This paper highlights an issue that calls into question the validity of the common research practice of studying samples of individuals, and using sample-based statistics to infer generalizations that are applied not only to the parent population, but to individuals. The lack of ergodicity in human data means that such generalizations are not justified. This problem is illustrated with respect to two common scenarios in psychological research that raise questions for the sorts of the…
Metoda dokumentów osobistych Floriana Znanieckiego oraz metoda biograficzna i ich współczesne konotacje w socjologii
2018
The article demonstrates the significance of Florian Znaniecki’s personal documents method and biographical method in contemporary sociology. By relating to the methodological disputes of the late 19lh and early 20lh century, it indicates the theoretical basis for the establishment of those methods and the connection with inductive sociology put forward by F. Znaniecki. It presents the diary-writing competitions announced in the interwar period as a sign of the implementation thereof. Proceeding to the post-war period, the article shows the construction of knowledge concerning the Western and Northern Lands based on diary materiał. In conclusion, it refers to the significance of the persona…
Access to Higher Education: An Instrument for Fair Societies?
2019
Access to higher education (HE) has a long history. To offer a view on the current debates and worldwide issues regarding access to HE, this editorial depicts how the control of educational access has historically been used as an instrument of governance at the interface of two processes: social stratification and the territorialisation of politics. Access to HE has remained embedded in these large structural processes even though HE has expanded from a highly elitist institution into mass education systems with equity of educational opportunities having become a desirable goal across societies. Analysing these processes helps understand the complex mechanisms producing inequalities in HE t…
Changing the heart and soul? Inequalities in Finland’s current pursuit of a narrow education policy
2018
The Finnish educational system is well known for its excellent learning results, highly trained teachers and egalitarian values. However, when the political leanings of the government change, its policies are usually altered as well. In this policy report we give an account of the recent changes and current trends in Finnish education policy. We analyse the characteristics of the Sipilä Government’s current education policy since 2015 and compare it to the Nordic welfare-state ideals of universalism, equality and social justice which have traditionally been the key building blocks of the Finnish education system. The Government’s policy appears to be narrow-minded and ignorant of issues rel…
Case study of why information security investment fail?
2015
Tämä tutkielma keskittyy tietoturvainvestointien päätöksentekoprosessiin. Ta- voitteena on tutkia miksi tietoturvainvestointipäätös hylätään. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen tausta perustuu aiemmin suoritettuun tutkimukseen, mikä on pää- osin käsitellyt tietoturvainvestointeja joko optimaalisen investointitason näkö- kulmasta, tai tehokkaan investointitason näkökulmasta.

Dangerous relationships : biases in freshwater bioassessment based on observed to expected ratios
2018
Copyright by the Ecological Society of America The ecological assessment of freshwaters is currently primarily based on biological communities and the reference condition approach (RCA). In the RCA, the communities in streams and lakes disturbed by humans are compared with communities in reference conditions with no or minimal anthropogenic influence. The currently favored rationale is using selected community metrics for which the expected values (E) for each site are typically estimated from environmental variables using a predictive model based on the reference data. The proportional differences between the observed values (O) and E are then derived, and the decision rules for status ass…
The pivotal role of students’ absorptive capacity in management learning
2022
Within a research context dominated by an increasing interest in innovative learning method- ologies in management education, an individual’s capacity to establish links between existing and new knowledge, that is, absorptive capacity (AC), has been surprisingly neglected in management (higher) education inquiry. This study helps to close this gap by investigating the role of management students’ AC on their academic performance. The study also examines the moderating effect on this relationship of using traditional learning methodologies (such as lectures), innovative learning methodologies (such as interacting with digital platforms), and having a cooperative climate in the classroom. Sec…
