Rhetoric and Pragmatics: Suggestions for a Fruitful Dialogue

The aim of this paper is to show that classical rhetoric can provide valuable insights in the contemporary debate in pragmatics. This is especially true for Aristotelian rhetoric, due to its philosophical approach. In the first part of the paper, I discusses the conditions under which ancient rhetoric can be a real partner of current pragmatics: (1) rhetoric must be understood as a type of knowledge (a techne) and not as a “jumbles of techniques”; (2) we need to consider persuasion as an anthropological feature and not only as a specific case of communication; (3) we should not exclude truth from the rhetorical field. Abstract: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard method for developing evidence-based medicine in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methodological problems in RCTs in IBD concern different aspects such as the definition of the study population due to the extreme variability of patients with IBD, the indices of disease activity, a clearly defined outcome, the environmental risk factors (i.e smoking behaviour) that may influence the randomization, the heterogeneous placebo rate of remission and the different statistical methods used to analyze the results. Contemporary caution against anachronism in intellectual history, and the currently mo mentous theoretical emphasis on subjectivity in the philosophy of mind, are two prevailing conditions that set puzzling constraints for studies in the history of philosophical psychol ogy. What is proposed is a meditation on the phrase ‘transformation of the educational system’, paying attention to the sense of the words, and showing what the desire for educational change can reveal. After explaining to what extent ‘educational system’ is a quasi-oxymoron, the meaning of ‘transformation’ has to be compared to those of revolution and utopia. Shrinkage and spectral filtering of correlation matrices: A comparison via the Kullback-Leibler distance

The problem of filtering information from large correlation matrices is of great importance in many applications. We have recently proposed the use of the Kullback-Leibler distance to measure the performance of filtering algorithms in recovering the underlying correlation matrix when the variables are described by a multivariate Gaussian distribution. Here we use the Kullback-Leibler distance to investigate the performance of filtering methods based on Random Matrix Theory and on the shrinkage technique. We also present some results on the application of the Kullback-Leibler distance to multivariate data which are non Gaussian distributed.
