Packet loss recovery in an indoor Free Space Optics link using rateless codes

Free Space Optics (FSO) systems present some important advantages if compared to Radio Frequency links, but they can be affected by several impairments that degrade the link quality and availability. In particular, due to temporary interruptions of the line-of-sight condition between the transmitter and the receiver, packet loss can occur during data transmission. In this work, we present an indoor Free Space Optics link, in which we have systematically generated interruptions of the beam. We demonstrate how the application of the most recent rateless codes, i.e., RaptorQ codes, can strongly improve the link quality by reducing packet loss. A cogging torque minimization procedure for IPMSMs based on different laminate geometry

This paper presents a possible minimization procedure of the cogging torque generated by an IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) with a progressive modification of a basic geometrical structure of rotor laminates. More in detail, an IPMSM model is analyzed by using a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach. Then, other IPMSM models, which are obtained by modifying the geometry of the IPMSM rotor laminates and by maintaining the same stator configuration, are proposed and discussed. The improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings calls for the availability of tools for evaluating and simulating the thermal behaviour of buildings, needing as input climatic databases. These databases contain a very large amount of data, resulting in long computational time analysis. Therefore, simple aggregation methods are used, among which the test reference year (TRY). ABAQUS gasket elements are an efficient and flexible tool to study gasket applications. Nevertheless the usage of the ABAQUS gasket elements is not limited to gasket analysis, but it provides an effective improvement in structural analysis. The results point out that both the predicted contact pressure and the predicted stress distribution depend on the mesh topology. Several combinations of mesh dimension and topology are investigated. An harmonic test condition for the metrological characterization and the operating principle identification of reactive static meters

This paper faces the problem of the metrological characterization of the static meters for reactive energy in the presence of harmonic distortion. Starting from the only available accuracy test condition in the presence of harmonics introduced in the Standards for active static meters, an experimental approach is proposed for the verification of such meters in the presence of harmonic distortion, as well as for the individuation of their operating principle. A theoretical validation of the obtained results is presented by means of a comparison with a standard and a commercial static meter with a known operating principle.

The Bell-Tower Facade: An Aseismic Device in Sicily Between the 12th and 18th Centuries

Imposing tower facades with belfries in the last order were built in Sicily Italy, from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque period. Until the 16th century, this model, which was inspired by northern European examples, also had a parallelepiped forepart leaning against the facade, working as containment for the pressure imparted by the inner longitudinal arches on the front, and amplified in case of earthquakes. The lacking static efficiency of these early structures is demonstrated by collapses during the strong earthquakes that hit the island in the modern age. Efficient Analysis and Design Strategies for Evanescent Mode Ridge Waveguide Filters

In this paper, a research on the compromises arisen in the design of traditional evanescent mode waveguide filters is carried out. As a result, clear design methodologies for optimizing length, losses, power handling and spurious-free out-of-band response are developed. In addition, an efficient and very accurate modal analysis tool for this kind of structures is presented. Several filters have been designed according to the different strategies proposed, and a prototype has been finally manufactured. Measurements and filter dimensions validate the proposed design procedures.

Optimum Performance of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators Coupled to Wind Turbines

In this paper a control algorithm for the efficiency improvement of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) is presented. The proposed algorithm reduces the losses of the generator without affecting its performances. In details, after a description of a dynamic model of the PMSG, which has been purposely modified in order to take into account the iron losses, the basic equations and the constraints to obtain the loss minimization are presented and discussed.
