Active commuting to school among preschool-aged children and its barriers: An exploratory study in collaboration with parents
2018
Abstract Introduction Active commuting to school (ACS) contributes to children's overall physical activity levels, providing multiple health benefits. However, studies analyzing the modes of transport used among children of preschool age (3–5 years), as well as which factors affect ACS, are scant. Methods We performed a mixed-method study, initially taking a qualitative approach in collaboration with parents of preschool-aged children (i.e., focus groups), to identify their usual modes of commuting to school with their offspring. Following this, we asked parents, through a questionnaire, about the modes of transport to school they use with their children, as well as the weekly use-frequency…
Go for it! Exercising makes you happy and strong
2020
Despite it is generally recognized the beneficial role of physical activity, large portion of the population is physically inactive. Very alarmingly, the well-known gender gap in physical activity is constantly increasing. Several barriers obstacle women to perform physical activity although exercising would be of paramount importance for their health in particular during pregnancy and menopause. In addition to physical health benefits, physical activity may influence well-being and resilience, greatly impacting on quality of life. Here we explore the relationship between physical activity resilience and well-being in a group of 1107 female residents in the Metropolitan area of Naples.
In Search of the Metropolitan Dimension
2021
The new settlement phenomena in our territory, linked to current globalisation processes and the increasing complexity of contemporary society, have caused a crisis of the historical boundaries and are creating new planning layouts. In this context, the metropolitan dimension is once again viable, and Italy, with Sicily sometimes experiencing these processes in advance, is reorganising the institutions covering large areas, directing processes and trying out new convergences, under the driving force of new public finance reorganisation policies.
The Governance of Metropolitan Areas: Problems and Alternatives in the Spanish Case
2013
In federalist thinking, a constant is the tension in defining optimal levels of government, its territorial scope and functions. These questions are particularly difficult at the local level. This is where we find that the differences between various forms of structuring local governments are vast. This is the case from the point of view of their legal status. In Spain, for example, we find municipalities, provinces, island authorities, counties, metropolitan areas, communities, consortia, local entities below the municipal level and other juridical forms. However, it is also the case from the point of view of their socioeconomic characteristics. Thus, for instance, it is difficult to compa…
New Regionalism—Not Too Complex for the Media Watchdog
2014
As cities grow and expand, governance networks advocated by the “new regionalism” have become increasingly important for policy making in metropolitan areas. This article examines media reporting about governance networks and the effect this reporting has on democratic accountability and legitimacy. We use data from a standardized content analysis of newspaper coverage about metropolitan policy making in four European metropolitan areas (Zurich, Berlin, Paris, and London), as well as survey data on citizens’ attitudes. We find that the leading newspapers adequately cover governance processes and pay attention to both governmental and nongovernmental actors. Media content is correlated with…
A GIS-Based Model for the analysis of an urban flash flood and its hydro-geomorphic response. The Valencia event of 1957
2016
Summary Flash floods are recurrent events around the Mediterranean region. Extreme episodes activate hydro-geomorphic high-intensity processes with low frequency. In urban environments, the complexity becomes higher due to the existence of very quick-response runoff. However, immediate recovery works remove the urban marks. After a short time both the significance and magnitude of the hydro-geomorphic event become completely unrecognizable. Nevertheless, these episodes generate extensive documentation which is testimony of the processes in almost real time. It is necessary to exploit this source typology in order to draw flood sketches when events far in time may lack a sufficiently rich da…
Housing Affordability and Income-threshold in Social Housing Policy
2016
Abstract The issue of affordable housing has again become crucial in ensuring a greater social equity, increasing social cohesion and reducing inequalities within metropolitan or regional systems which, in the current climate of severe economic crisis, have to respond to global challenges of development, innovation and sustainability. This study aims at building a system of knowledge about the housing affordability on the territorial scale, by which to identify the local characteristics of housing problems that could be solved through traditional planning tools or new practices of social housing, which involves private stakeholders and/or public administrations. This system of knowledge sho…
A J-MADeM Agent-Based Social Simulation to Model Urban Mobility
2011
The mobility models followed within metropolitan areas, mainly based on the massive use of the car instead of the public transportation, will soon become unsustainable unless there is a change of citizens’ minds and transport policies. The main challenge related to urban mobility is that of getting free-flowing greener cities, which are provided with a smarter and accessible urban transport system. In this paper, we present an agent-based social simulation approach to tackle this kind of social-ecological systems. The Jason Multi-modal Agent Decision Making (JMADeM) library enable us to model and implement the social decisions made by each habitant about how to get to work every day, e.g., …
