Cadmium, mercury, and lead effects on gill tissue of freshwater crayfishProcambarus clarkii (girard)
1989
Intermolt adult crayfish P. clarkii were used for this work. After acclimatization to laboratory conditions crayfish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium, mercury, and lead for 96 h. Gills of control and exposed crayfish were removed and ATPase activity and oxygen uptake rate were determined. Structural damage of gill filaments was also observed. Gill tissue respiration rates were measured for individual crayfish using a Gilson differential respirometer. Lead causes a decrease of gill oxygen uptake, but neither cadmium nor mercury seems to affect it at the concentrations employed. Although all metals studied alter gill filament structure, lead damage is the most apparent. In …
Shallow ocean oxygen decline during the end-Triassic mass extinction
2022
The end-Triassic mass extinction (ETME) was associated with intensified deep-water anoxia in epicontinental seas and mid-depth waters, yet the absolute oxygenation state in the shallow ocean is uncharacterized. Here we report carbonate-associated iodine data from the peritidal Mount Sparagio section (Southern Italy) that documents the ETME (~ 200 Ma) in the western Tethys. We find a sharp drop in carbonate I/(Ca + Mg) ratios across the extinction horizon and persisting into the Early Jurassic. This records local dissolved oxygen and iodate decline in the near-surface ocean of low-latitude Tethys due to the development of depleted oxygen concentrations. Consequently, during the ETME even sha…
Metric Lie groups admitting dilations
2019
We consider left-invariant distances $d$ on a Lie group $G$ with the property that there exists a multiplicative one-parameter group of Lie automorphisms $(0, \infty)\rightarrow\mathtt{Aut}(G)$, $\lambda\mapsto\delta_\lambda$, so that $ d(\delta_\lambda x,\delta_\lambda y) = \lambda d(x,y)$, for all $x,y\in G$ and all $\lambda>0$. First, we show that all such distances are admissible, that is, they induce the manifold topology. Second, we characterize multiplicative one-parameter groups of Lie automorphisms that are dilations for some left-invariant distance in terms of algebraic properties of their infinitesimal generator. Third, we show that an admissible left-invariant distance on a Lie …
Mutations in DNA Binding and Transactivation Domains Affect the Dynamics of Parvovirus NS1 Protein
2013
ABSTRACT The multifunctional replication protein of autonomous parvoviruses, NS1, is vital for viral genome replication and for the control of viral protein production. Two DNA-interacting domains of NS1, the N-terminal and helicase domains, are necessary for these functions. In addition, the N and C termini of NS1 are required for activation of viral promoter P38. By comparison with the structural and biochemical data from other parvoviruses, we identified potential DNA-interacting amino acid residues from canine parvovirus NS1. The role of the identified amino acids in NS1 binding dynamics was studied by mutagenesis, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, and computer simulations. Mu…
Consensus guidelines for the detection of immunogenic cell death
2014
Apoptotic cells have long been considered as intrinsically tolerogenic or unable to elicit immune responses specific for dead cell-associated antigens. However, multiple stimuli can trigger a functionally peculiar type of apoptotic demise that does not go unnoticed by the adaptive arm of the immune system, which we named "immunogenic cell death" (ICD). ICD is preceded or accompanied by the emission of a series of immunostimulatory damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in a precise spatiotemporal configuration. Several anticancer agents that have been successfully employed in the clinic for decades, including various chemotherapeutics and radiotherapy, can elicit ICD. Moreover, defect…
Hardy spaces and quasiconformal maps in the Heisenberg group
2023
We define Hardy spaces $H^p$, $00$ such that every $K$-quasiconformal map $f:B \to f(B) \subset \mathbb{H}^1$ belongs to $H^p$ for all $0<p<p_0(K)$. Second, we give two equivalent conditions for the $H^p$ membership of a quasiconformal map $f$, one in terms of the radial limits of $f$, and one using a nontangential maximal function of $f$. As an application, we characterize Carleson measures on $B$ via integral inequalities for quasiconformal mappings on $B$ and their radial limits. Our paper thus extends results by Astala and Koskela, Jerison and Weitsman, Nolder, and Zinsmeister, from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{H}^1$. A crucial difference between the proofs in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{…
Conformality and $Q$-harmonicity in sub-Riemannian manifolds
2016
We prove the equivalence of several natural notions of conformal maps between sub-Riemannian manifolds. Our main contribution is in the setting of those manifolds that support a suitable regularity theory for subelliptic $p$-Laplacian operators. For such manifolds we prove a Liouville-type theorem, i.e., 1-quasiconformal maps are smooth. In particular, we prove that contact manifolds support the suitable regularity. The main new technical tools are a sub-Riemannian version of p-harmonic coordinates and a technique of propagation of regularity from horizontal layers.
Microwave Response of Ceramic MgB2 Samples
2009
The microwave response of ceramic MgB2 has been investigated as a function of temperature and external magnetic field by two different techniques: microwave surface impedance and second-harmonic emission measurements. The measurements of the surface resistance have shown that microwave losses in MgB2 are strongly affected by the magnetic field in the whole range of temperatures below Tc, even for relatively low field values. The results have been accounted for in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model hypothesizing that in different temperature ranges the microwave current induces fluxons to move in different regimes. In particular, the results at temperatures close to Tc have been quan…

Nishadana typica (Distant, 1889) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae): first record from Laos
2016
Nishadana typica Distant, 1889 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae) is reported for the first time from Laos. This species was hitherto recorded only in India (three localities), Myanmar (a single locality), and Bangladesh (general data, without closer location).
