Audiogrāmata Latvijā: publisko bibliotēku bibliotekāru viedoklis

2018

Pētījuma rezultāti parāda, ka apmeklētāju in…

Ceylon cinnamon and its major compound Cinnamaldehyde can limit overshooting inflammatory signaling and angiogenesis in vitro: implications for COVID…

2021

AbstractOvershooting immune reactions can occur during inflammatory responses that accompany severe infections, such as COVID-19. Cytokines, damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species can generate positive feedback loops of inflammation, leading to long-term complications such as vascular endothelialitis, thrombosis, endothelial dysfunction, neurological impairments, and chronic fatigue. Dexamethasone can limit inflammation by inhibiting the activation of pro-inflammatory transcription factors. High dose dexamethasone, however, has undesirable side effects. Here, we show that Ceylon cinnamon and its major compound cinnamaldehyde can mitigate infla…

Cellular effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on blood cells (monocytes, macrophages, platelets)

2002

Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke and the leading cause of death and long-term disabilities in westernized societies. Several important environmental and genetic risk factors are associated with atherosclerosis. Over the past decade, it has become evident that atherosclerosis is not simply an inevitable degenerative consequence of ageing, but rather a chronic inflammatory condition connecting altered cholesterol metabolism and other risk factors to the development and progression of the atherosclerotic lesion and its sequelae like plaque rupture, fibrosis, calcification and thrombosis [1].

Modular Breath Analyzer (MBA): Introduction of a Breath Analyzer Platform Based on an Innovative and Unique, Modular eNose Concept for Breath Diagnos…

2021

Exhaled breath analysis for early disease detection may provide a convenient method for painless and non-invasive diagnosis. In this work, a novel, compact and easy-to-use breath analyzer platform with a modular sensing chamber and direct breath sampling unit is presented. The developed analyzer system comprises a compact, low volume, temperature-controlled sensing chamber in three modules that can host any type of resistive gas sensor arrays. Furthermore, in this study three modular breath analyzers are explicitly tested for reproducibility in a real-life breath analysis experiment with several calibration transfer (CT) techniques using transfer samples from the experiment. The experiment …

Genetic and Molecular Characterization of The Human Osteosarcoma 3AB-OS Cancer Stem Cell Line: A Possible Model For Studying Osteosarcoma Origin and …

2013

Finding new treatments targeting cancer stem cells (CSCs) within a tumor seems to be critical to halt cancer and improve patient survival. Osteosarcoma is an aggressive tumor affecting adolescents, for which there is no second-line chemotherapy. Uncovering new molecular mechanisms underlying the development of osteosarcoma and origin of CSCs is crucial to identify new possible therapeutic strategies. Here, we aimed to characterize genetically and molecularly the human osteosarcoma 3AB-OS CSC line, previously selected from MG63 cells and which proved to have both in vitro and in vivo features of CSCs. Classic cytogenetic studies demonstrated that 3AB-OS cells have hypertriploid karyotype wit…

Reduced muscle inactivity, sedentary time and cardio-metabolic benefits : effectiveness of a one-year family-based cluster randomized controlled trial

2016

A driving hypothesis of the evolving field of sedentary behavior is that frequent muscle activity short-circuits detrimental physiological effects of sedentary time. However, the field relies mostly on observational health associations of proxy measures of muscle inactivity, like television viewing or lack of accelerometer-derived impacts. This study tested effectiveness of a family-based cluster-randomized controlled trial aimed at reducing and breaking up sedentary time at work and leisure time of families on muscle inactivity patterns, sedentary time and cardio-metabolic biomarkers. The intervention consisted of a lecture, face-to-face tailored counseling, two follow-up calls and five em…

Courbe d'une fraction rationnelle et courbes de Bézier à points massiques

2019

Modelling polynomial curves or arcs with Bezier curves can be seen as a basis conversion not so easy for the rational curves. The classical representation of Rational curves based on controlled points with non negative weights as in NURBS does not cover all rational curves. This can be fixed by using the rational Bezier representation by mass points that are weighted points with negative or null weights. The curve of any rational function includes arcs denoted as connex components. These curves and their asymptotic lines are here modelled by the use of mass control points. The asymptotic lines are described by a point that are one weighted point or a vector. An algorithm proposes to represe…

Sequence-specific and DNA structure-dependent interactions of Escherichia coli MutS and human p53 with DNA

2013

Many proteins involved in DNA repair systems interact with DNA that has structure altered from the typical B-form helix. Using magnetic beads to immobilize DNAs containing various types of structures, we evaluated the in vitro binding activities of two well-characterized DNA repair proteins, Escherichia coli MutS and human p53. E. coli MutS bound to double-stranded DNAs, with higher affinity for a G/T mismatch compared to a G/A mismatch and highest affinity for larger non-B-DNA structures. E. coli MutS bound best to DNA between pH 6 and 9. Experiments discriminated between modes of p53-DNA binding, and increasing ionic strength reduced p53 binding to nonspecific double-stranded DNA, but had…

Magnesium, Oxidative Stress, and Aging Muscle

2014

Abstract Magnesium (Mg) deficiency, aside from having a negative impact on the energy production pathways required by the mitochondria to generate ATP, also reduces the threshold antioxidant capacity of the aging organism and its resistance to free-radical damage. Mg acts as an antioxidant against free radical damage of the mitochondria. Chronic Mg deficiency results in excessive production of oxygen-derived free radicals and low-grade inflammation. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress have been identified as pathogenic factors in several age-related conditions. Aging is often associated with Mg inadequacy, muscle loss, and sarcopenia. Although the importance of magnesium as a determin…
