Mixtures of the cationic surfactants benzalkonium chloride (BKC) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were quickly resolved and reproducibly and reliably determined by using background electrolytes (BGEs) containing 80 mM borate, pH 8.5, bile salts and large concentrations of an organic solvent. We report herein thermally responsive elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) in a linear AB diblock architecture with an N-terminal peptide ligand that self-assemble into spherical micelles when heated slightly above body temperature. A series of 10 ELP block copolymers (ELP(BC)'s ) with different molecular weights and hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic block ratios were genetically synthesized by recursive directional ligation. A calorimetric study was performed to focus attention on the interactions between copolymers and anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Three aspects were analyzed: (1) the hydrophobicity of the surfactant, (2) the change of the copolymer molecular weight, and (3) the nature of the hydrophilicity of the copolymer. To this purpose, the family of sodium alkanoates (sodium octanoate through sodium dodecanoate) and the triblock copolymers EO76PO 29EO76 (F68), EO103PO39EO 103 and EO132PO50EO132 were investigated. Based on a recently reported strategy to rationally activate lipolytic enzymes for use in nonaqueous media [Mingarro, I., et al. (1995) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 92, 3308-3312], we compared the behavior in water-restricted environments of activated vs nonactivated forms of different lipases toward their natural substrates, triacylglycerols. Physicochemical investigations on the aggregation of phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholines) in organic solvents are reviewed and compared with the aggregation behaviour of phospholipids in aqueous medium. In particular we review the data showing that phosphatidylcholines (lecithins) form reverse micellar structures in certain apolar solvents. In these systems not only low molecular weight compounds but also catalytically active enzymes and entire cells can be solubilized. In addition, highly viscous phosphatidylcholine gels can be obtained in organic solvents upon solubilizing a critical amount of water. Abstract The FT-IR and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of ( S )- and -( R )-methyl lactate have been recorded for neat samples and at various concentrations in CCl 4 and DMSO solutions. These spectra are used to analyse the FT-IR and VCD spectra of methyl lactates in presence of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in CCl 4 , where the surfactant molecules are known to form reverse micelles. Localization and interactions of melatonin in dry cholesterol/lecithin mixed reversed micelles used as cell membrane models

The state of melatonin confined in dry cholesterol/lecithin mixed reversed micelles dispersed in CCl4 was investigated using 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies as a function of the melatonin to lecithin molar ratio (R(MLT)) and of the cholesterol to lecithin molar ratio (R(CHL)). An analysis of experimental results leads to the hypothesis that, independent of R(MLT) and as a consequence of anisotropic melatonin/lecithin, melatonin/cholesterol and cholesterol/lecithin interactions, melatonin is totally solubilized in reversed micelles.
