Photocatalytic CO 2 Valorization by Using Ti O2 , ZrO2 and Graphitic Based Semiconductors
2018
In this century, a broad scientific interest has been devoted to fulfill sustainable industrial processes and climatic change remediation. In this prospective, various green technologies have been studied to valorize CO 2• The aim of this research is the CO 2 reduction in presence of water by using the photocatalytic technology with nanomaterials as the photocatalysts. The present work overviews the main outcomes obtained by using graphitic and oxide based photocatalysts both in gas/solid and liquid/solid batch reactors under simulated solar light. In all gas/solid regime tests the major products detected were methane, carbon monoxide, and acetaldehyde.

A multifuctional nanoplatform for drug targeted delivery based on radiation-engineered nanogels
2020
Abstract Under a rational design, combining biologically active molecules, ligands to specific cell receptors and fluorescent, radioactive or paramagnetic labels into a single nano-object can bridge the unique properties of the individual components and improve conventional sensing, imaging and therapeutic efficacies. The validation of these functional nano-objects requires careful testing both in terms of physico-chemical properties and biological behaviour in vitro and in vivo, prior to translation into the clinic. Ionising radiation of aqueous polymer solutions is a viable strategy to produce multifunctional nanogels from aqueous solutions of hydrophilic polymers. By proper selection of …

Governare Palermo. Storia e sociologia di un cambiamento mancato.
2009
Nitric oxide--a versatile key player in cochlear function and hearing disorders.
2012
Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule which can generally be formed by three nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Two of them, the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and the neural nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), are calcium/calmodulin-dependent and constitutively expressed in many cell types. Both isoforms are found in the vertebrate cochlea. The inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is independent of calcium and normally not detectable in the un-stimulated cochlea. In the inner ear, as in other tissues, NO was identified as a multitask molecule involved in various processes such as neurotransmission and neuromodulation. In addition, increasing evidence demonstrates that the NO-dependent…

Silver Clusters of Five Atoms as Highly Selective Antitumoral Agents Through Irreversible Oxidation of Thiols
2022
Low atomicity clusters present properties dependent on the size, due to the quantum confinement, with well-defined electronic structures and high stability. Here it is shown that Ag5 clusters catalyze the complete oxidation of sulfur to S+6. Ag5 catalytic activity increases with different oxidant species in the order O2 ≪ H2O2 < OH•. Selective oxidation of thiols on the cysteine residues of glutathione and thioredoxin is the primary mechanism human cells have to maintain redox homeostasis. Contingent upon oxidant concentration, Ag5 catalyzes the irreversible oxidation of glutathione and thioredoxin, triggering apoptosis. Modification of the intracellular environment to a more oxidized state…
