Physico-chemical and mechanical characterization of in-situ forming xyloglucan gels incorporating a growth factor to promote cartilage reconstruction

2016

Abstract The development of growth factors is very promising in the field of tissue regeneration but specifically designed formulations have to be developed in order to enable such new biological entities (NBEs). In particular, the range of therapeutic concentrations is usually very low compared to other active proteins and the confinement in the target site can be of crucial importance. In-situ forming scaffolds are very promising solutions for minimally invasive intervention in cartilage reconstruction and targeting of NBEs. In this work injectable, in-situ forming gels of a temperature responsive partially degalactosylated xyloglucan (Deg-XG) incorporating the growth factor FGF-18 are fo…

Induced seismicity response of hydraulic fracturing: results of a multidisciplinary monitoring at the Wysin site, Poland

2018

Abstract Shale oil and gas exploitation by hydraulic fracturing experienced a strong development worldwide over the last years, accompanied by a substantial increase of related induced seismicity, either consequence of fracturing or wastewater injection. In Europe, unconventional hydrocarbon resources remain underdeveloped and their exploitation controversial. In UK, fracturing operations were stopped after the Mw 2.3 Blackpool induced earthquake; in Poland, operations were halted in 2017 due to adverse oil market conditions. One of the last operated well at Wysin, Poland, was monitored independently in the framework of the EU project SHEER, through a multidisciplinary system including seis…

Arginine-Rich Peptidomimetic Ampicillin/Gentamicin Conjugate To Tackle Nosocomial Biofilms: A Promising Strategy To Repurpose First-Line Antibiotics

2023

: Combined therapy with penicillins and aminoglycosides has been proved beneficial to address many persistent bacterial infections with possible synergistic effects. However, the different pharmacokinetic profiles of these two antibiotic classes may not guarantee a concerted spatio-temporal delivery at the site of action, decreasing the efficacy of this combination and promoting resistance. Herein, we propose a multifunctional antibiotic-polymer conjugate, designed to colocalize ampicillin and gentamicin to tackle persistent biofilm infections. The two antibacterial molecules were grafted along with the amino acid l-arginine to a biocompatible polymer backbone with peptidomimetic hydrophili…

Il primo innamoramento vissuto dagli adolescenti palermitani

2012

Heteropolyacid‐Based Materials as Heterogeneous Photocatalysts

2013

Heteropolyacids (HPAs) that are often used as heteropolyanions are cheap and stable compounds that have been extensively used as acid and oxidation catalysts as a result of their strong Brønsted acidity and ability to undergo multielectron-transfer reactions. HPAs, which are very soluble in water and polar solvents, have been also used as homogeneous photocatalysts for the oxidation of organic substrates in the presence of oxygen, but their use in heterogeneous systems is by far desirable. Dispersing HPAs onto solid supports with high surface area is useful to increase their specific surface area and hence (photo)catalytic activity. Moreover, owing to the high energy gap between the HOMO an…

Enhanced (photo)catalytic activity of Wells-Dawson (H6P2W18O62) in comparison to Keggin (H3PW12O40) heteropolyacids for 2-propanol dehydration in gas…

2016

Abstract Catalytic and photocatalytic 2-propanol dehydration to propene at atmospheric pressure and a temperature range of 60–120 °C were carried out in gas-solid regime by using bare and supported Keggin H 3 PW 12 O 40 (PW 12 ) and Wells-Dawson H 6 P 2 W 18 O 62 (P 2 W 18 ) heteropolyacids (HPAs). Binary materials were prepared by impregnation of the HPAs on commercial SiO 2 and TiO 2 . The Wells-Dawson was in any case more active than the Keggin heteropolyacid and the differences were enhanced when the supported samples were used. In particular, Wells-Dawson HPA supported on TiO 2 and under irradiation showed the highest activity. The HPA species played the key role both in the catalytic …

Influence of Adsorbed Water on the Activation Energy of Model Photocatalytic Reactions

2017

Two commercial (Merck and Sigma-Aldrich) and two home prepared (HP05 and HP05C) powdered TiO2 photocatalysts were investigated by fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in order to explore the nature of the interactions between water and the solid surfaces. The results were related to the activation energies determined at temperatures ranging from 303 to 353 K for the photocatalytic oxidation in water of three model molecules presenting different interactions with the solid surface (catechol, phenol, and metylbenzoate). The photoactivity results at different temperatures were comparable to each other because the runs were carried out while keeping constant the concentrati…
