Fluoride-induced precipitates on enamel surface and subsurface areas visualised by electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy

The present study examined the enamel surface after in vitro topical treatments with a neutral 2% NaF solution. For minimising the risk of artefacts, samples were inspected without pre-treatment as fresh, naturally wet specimens by complementary techniques: variable pressure electron microscopy (VP-SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). VP-SEM provided information on the surface morphology, whereas CLSM allowed non-destructive visualisation of subsurface areas. Incremental lines in root cementum of human teeth: an approach to their ultrastructural nature by microscopy.

In ground sections of human teeth, root cementum shows under the light microscope as alternating, almost concentric, dark and light rings. In paleontology and forensic medicine, the number of these incremental lines or annulations is used to derive the age-at-death of the individual. Thin-shell plastic lenses for space and laboratory applications

We have identified an inexpensive, readily available, mechanically stable, extremely smooth, elastic, and mechanically uniform plastic suitable for thin film X-ray optics. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is easily deformed without losing its elastic properties or surface smoothness. Most important, PET can be coated with mono- or multilayers that reflect X-rays at grazing incidence. We have used these properties to produce X-ray optics made either as a concentric nest of cylinders or as a spiral. Structural characterization of original 3D gallium structures grown by LP‐MOCVD

This study is concerned with the growth and characterization of metallic gallium 3D structures, obtained with a single growth step, by the LP-MOCVD technique on various substrates. Commercial organo-metallic is used as gallium precursor and nitrogen as carrier gas. The growth temperature and the reactor pressure are ranking between 500 and 700 °C, and between 150 and 700 torr, respectively. Depending on the elaboration conditions, different 3D structures are obtained such as droplets, cauliflowers, aggregates or thin stems, with micrometer sizes. Trace element analysis in pre-solar stardust grains via full-field imaging XPS (Nano-ESCA)

An acid-resistant, SiC-rich, residue from the Murchison meteorite was investigated by means of a novel imaging XPS instrument. The micrometer-sized grains were deposited on a Si wafer from an aqueous suspension. Energy filtered ESCA images have been taken in the kinetic energy range from the threshold up to about 400 eV for various photon energies. A lateral resolution of the order of 120 nm along with a high energy resolution in the range of 100 meV provides the basis for chemical trace element analysis with maximum sensitivity. Laboratory astrophysics and microanalysis with NTD-germanium-based X-ray microcalorimeters

With the ability to create cosmic plasma conditions in the laboratory it is possible to investigate the dependencies of key diagnostic X-ray lines on density, temperature, and excitation conditions that exist in astrophysical sources with X-ray optics and a high-resolution X-ray microcalorimeter. The same instrumentation can be coupled to scanning electron microscopes or X-ray fluorescence probes to analyze the elemental and chemical composition of electronic, biological, geological and particulate materials. We describe how our microcalorimeter and X-ray optics provide significantly improved capabilities for laboratory astrophysics and microanalysis.

Mineralogical and Chemical Records of Icelandic Dust Sources Upon Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard Islands)

This work aims to identify the geochemical and mineralogical markers of Icelandic dust and to differentiate it from the dust of local origin deposited at the Ny-Ålesund station. We characterized representative sediment samples from Iceland and Svalbard and compared them to a set of aerosol samples collected in Ny-Ålesund to check the existence and type of the mineralogical markers.
