In vitro efficacy of a Hydrophilic Central Venous Catheter Loaded with Silver to Prevent Microbial Colonization

A method was developed to load the surface of a central venous catheter with silver to prevent bacterial colonization. Silver confers a broad antimicrobial activity with a relatively low risk of resistance. Catheters were incubated with a silver nitrate solution in different concentrations. The solvent, incubation temperature and incubation period were varied to examine the influence on the catheter loading. With increasing incubation temperature, time and concentration of silver nitrate, higher rates of silver elution were observed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. PCR-based procedures for detection and quantification of Staphylococcus aureus and their application in food.

Aims:  To evaluate the specificity of nuc targeted primers for PCR detection of Staphylococcus aureus in different food matrices and to establish a RTQ-PCR procedure suitable for the routine detection and quantification of this pathogen in food. Methods and Results:  Specificity of nuc targeted primers (Pri1–Pri2 and the newly designed RTQ-PCR primers) was tested on a total of 157 strains of genetically confirmed identity, including reference and food isolates. Identification and typing of food-borne Staphylococcus aureus by PCR-based techniques.

Abstract The possibility of using PCR for rapid identification of food-borne Staphylococcus aureus isolates was evaluated as an alternative to the API-Staph system. A total of 158 strains, 15 S. aureus , 12 other staphylococcal species, and 131 isolates recovered from 164 food samples were studied. They were phenotypically characterized by API-Staph profiles and tested for PCR amplification with specific primers directed to thermonuclease ( nuc ) and enterotoxin ( sea to see ) genes. Real-time quantitative PCR of Staphylococcus aureus and application in restaurant meals.

Staphylococcus aureus is considered the second most common pathogen to cause outbreaks of food poisoning, exceeded only by Campylobacter. Consumption of foods containing this microorganism is often identified as the cause of illness. In this study, a rapid, reliable, and sensitive real-time quantitative PCR was developed and compared with conventional culture methods. Real-time quantitative PCR was carried out by purifying DNA extracts of S. aureus with a Staphylococcus sample preparation kit and quantifying it in the LightCycler system with hybridization probes. Abstract Introduction 67 Ga citrate has been extensively used to detect infection and inflammation since 1971. However, its clinical utility is compromised due to several limitations. The present project explored whether 68 Ga- apo -transferrin ( 68 Ga-TF), when prepared in vitro, is a useful agent for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of bacterial infection. Incidence of enterotoxigenic staphylococci and their toxins in foods

Of 504 food samples collected from cafeterias, 19 (3.8%) yielded strains of enterotoxigenic staphylococci, and 10 (52.6%), 4 (21.1%), 3 (15.8%), and 2 (10.5%) of these strains produced enterotoxins C (SEC), D (SED), B (SEB), and A (SEA), respectively. Moreover, SEA, SEB, and SEC were isolated from three hamburger samples. Of 181 food samples collected from four restaurants before the implementation of the hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system, 7 (3.9%) were found to contain enterotoxigenic strains, and SED, SEC, and SEA were produced by 4 (57.1%), 2 (28.6%), and 1 (14.3%) of these strains, respectively. The monomer of 2-butanone peroxide is a novel peroxygen derivative with potential use as biocide in the hospital environment. The aim of this study was to test the biocidal activity of different concentrations of the compound against American Tissue Culture Collection strains from 11 different micro-organisms, including bacteria, mycobacteria, spores, fungi and virus, following the European Standard guidelines. A modified pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) protocol was developed and applied to clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and enterococci to reduce the cost of using lysostaphin. This protocol reduces the expenses of PFGE typing of S. aureus and enterococci as it removes the use of lysostaphin during the spheroplast formation from these bacteria.
