Archaean tonalitic gneiss of Finnish Lapland revisited: zircon ion-microprobe ages

We report single grain and grain-domain U−Pb zircon ages for the Tojottamanselka tonalitic gneiss previously investigated by the whole-rock Rb−Sr, Pb−Pb and Sm−Nd methods, by conventional U−Pb zircon density/size fraction analysis and by Hf-isotopes (Kroner et al. 1981; Patchett et al. 1981; Jahn et al. 1984) and established as one of the oldest known rocks of the Baltic shield. Our data confirm the intrusive age as 3115±29 Ma (standard error), but we also found slightly older xenocrystic zircon cores with 207Pb/206Pb ages between 3161±19 and 3248±10 Ma that may either be derived from earlier phases of the tonalite melt or from pre-tonalite sialic crust. Electron microprobe technique for the determination of iron oxidation state in silicate glasses

We present a new calibration for the determination of the iron oxidation state in silicate glasses by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) with the "flank method." This method is based on the changes in both intensity and wavelength of the FeLα and FeLβ X-ray emission lines with iron oxidation state. The flank method utilizes the maximum difference for the FeLα and FeLβ spectra observed at the peak flanks between different standard materials, which quantitatively correlates with the Fe2+ content. Provided that this correlation is calibrated on reference materials, the Fe2+/ΣFe ratio can be determined for samples with known total Fe content. Trace metal partitioning in Fe–Mn nodules from Sicilian soils, Italy

Concentrations of 20 elements (Mn, Fe, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Cd, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pb) were determined in 18 Fe–Mn nodules from two alfisols, which are subject to periodic waterlogging. The nodules are significantly enriched in most trace metals relative to the host soil, with Mn, Co, Ce, Pb, Ba, Cd, Ni more enriched than Fe, V, La, Cu, Sr, Zn. Cesium and rubidium show poor or no enrichment in the nodules, consistent with their aluminosilicate affiliation. International audience; Instruments for surface missions to extraterrestrial bodies should be cross-calibrated using a common suite of relevant materials. Such work is necessary to improve instrument performance and aids in the interpretation of in-situ measurements. At the CNRS campus in Orléans, the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers en région Centre (OSUC) has created a collection of well-characterised rocks and minerals for testing and calibrating instruments to be flown in space missions. Measurement of sulfur isotope ratios in micrometer-sized samples by NanoSIMS

Abstract Sulfur isotope ratios of atmospheric aerosol particles can provide detailed information with regard to the origin and the transport of sulfur in the environment. The new Cameca NanoSIMS 50 ion microprobe technique permits analysis of individual aerosol particles with volumes down to 0.5 μm 3 and a precision for δ 34 S of 3–10‰ (2 σ ). Multistage geochronological evolution of the Velká Fatra Mountains—a combined TIMS and ion-microprobe study on zircons

Abstract New isotopic and geochronological data from the Velka Fatra Mountains (Tatric Unit of the Central Western Carpathians) are presented and discussed with a focus on the Variscan orogeny and events during Permian and Early Triassic times. The investigated samples are meta- to per-aluminous granitoids and their trace element patterns indicate a volcanic arc origin. This study presents U–Pb single zircon data, measured on TIMS as well as on an ion-microprobe (SIMS). The zircon age determinations were additionally constrained by cathodoluminescence (CL). White micas coexisting with albite, quartz, chlorite, and clinozoisite in low-grade schists of the Beaume Valley (Massif Central, France) have been analyzed by standard microprobe techniques. As the micas of an albite-rich thin section show significantly higher Na-contents than those of an albite-poor one of the same rock sample, the application of the muscovite-albite-geothermometer results in inconsistent temperature values. Thus the analyses may indicate that the distribution of sodium between coexisting white micas and albite not only depends on temperature and pressure but also on the chemical potentials of the alkalies in the metamorphic fluid phase.

On the True Indium Content of In-Filled Skutterudites

The incongruently melting single-filled skutterudite InxCo4Sb12 is known as a promising bulk thermoelectric material. However, the products of current bulk syntheses contain always impurities of InSb, Sb, CoSb, or CoSb2, which prevent an unbiased determination of its thermoelectric properties. We report a new two-step synthesis of high-purity InxCo4Sb12 with nominal compositions x = 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, and 0.20 that separates the kieftite (CoSb3) formation from the topotactic filler insertion. To study the corrosion of P-91 (9% chromium and 1% molybdenum) material with lead–lithium (Pb–Li) eutectic, two experiments were carried out in a forced convection loop, at eutectic temperature of 550 °C. The first experiment was carried out at a velocity of 15 cm s−1 for 1000 h and the second experiment, at a velocity of 30 cm s−1 for 2700 h. In both the experiments, P-91 sample coupons were exposed to Pb–Li flow in the presence and absence of magnetic field.
