Watching the photo-oxidation of a single aromatic hydrocarbon molecule

International audience; The photooxidation of single dye molecules (see scheme) can be followed by confocal fluorescence microscopy. The self-sensitized reaction with singlet oxygen leads to a suite of products, which may be differentiated spectrally. Tentative structures for certain photoproducts have been obtained from quantum-chemical calculations.

Grafting of Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Films on Silica Supports Containing Surface-Bound Free Radical Initiators

Silica particles containing surface-bound free radical initiators have been used as supports for the grafting of thin films of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). This technique offers a means of fine-tuning the layer thickness for improved kinetic properties or enhanced capacity in chromatographic or sensor applications. Synthesis of reactive hyperbranched and star-like polyethers and their use for toughening of vinylester–urethane hybrid resins

A vinylester – urethane hybrid resin (VEUH) was toughened by adding various vinyl-functionalized branched polyethers in 10 and 20 wt%. Two sets of hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) with different branching density were compared with a set of six-arm star polymers. Besides the architecture, the polymers also varied in their characteristics (molecular mass and mass distribution, vinyl/hydroxy ratio). Mode I fracture toughness behavior of hydro-thermally aged carbon fibre reinforced DGEBA-HHPA-PES systems

In this work the Mode I fracture toughness behavior of unidirectional CFRP laminates is investigated by means of Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests. The composite samples were manufactured by thermal curing after impregnation of a Carbon fabric with a DGEBA epoxy and anhydride HHPA curing agent. One resin batch was also mixed with a PES thermoplastic monomer to enhance the matrix toughness. Two lots of samples, toughened and un-toughened, were then left to soak in hot water to achieve various degrees of aging. Characterization of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) modified by ion implantation

Abstract Surface modification of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is induced by ion implantation of different ions at 300 keV energy. The aim of this work was the chemical, physical and mechanical characterization of the modified material in order to know deep inside about the effect of the ion beam upon the polymer. The irradiated surfaces are investigated by Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption and micro-hardness analysis, scanning electron microscopy. Pin on disc measurements valuated the wear of the UHMWPE against a stainless steel probe; wear resistance increases of about 76% after the ion implantation. Polymers films with indandione derivatives as alternatives to azobenzene polymers for optical patterning

Surface relief gratings (SRGs) on organic thin films are studied extensively for both scientific interest and in relevance to the applications. Among the chromophores being used the azobenzenes showed the best performance, but the use of alternative photo-sensitive groups provides better general understanding of the phenomena. A thermodynamic theory and molecular dynamics simulations of photoinduced effects are discussed. In this study we use indandione derivatives, known as promising materials for photonics applications, as an alternative to the azobenzenes. A method is described for the determination of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of various polymers from electron microscopy pictures of their molecules. It is shown, that the number of molecules needed to construct the distribution is between 200 and 300. Furthermore, with macroscopic density of the polymer and the volume determined by electron microscopy, the correct mass of a single molecule is obtained. The method is demonstrated for samples of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) and the results are compared with those of GPC-measurements.

Carbon nanostructures incorporated on methacrylate monoliths for separation of small molecules by nano-liquid chromatography

Abstract Carbon nanostructures have been incorporated to polymethacrylate monoliths to develop novel stationary phases with enhanced separation performance in nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC). Two incorporation approaches of these nanomaterials in monoliths were investigated. Single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) were first incorporated to the polymerization mixture, followed by UV initiation. The resulting stationary phases with embedded SWNHs led to an increase in the separation performance of analytes compared to the parent monolith.
