Aims To assess the agreement of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) determinations from unenhanced echocardiography, contrast-enhanced echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cineventriculography as well as the inter-observer agreement for each method. Methods and results In 120 patients, with evenly distributed EF-groups (G 55, 35-55, L 35%), cineventriculography, unenhanced echocardiography with second harmonic imaging, and contrast echocardiography at tow mechanical index with iv administration of SonoVueR were performed. Postnatal neurogenesis in the the turtle telencephalon was investigated by using bromodeoxyuridine immunocytochemistry and [3H]thymidine autoradiography. Red-eared slider turtles Trachemys scripta elegans (Cryptodira, Emydidae) 2-3 months old were injected with the thymidine analogue 5'-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and allowed to survive for 7, 30, 90, and 180 days. Results indicate that cells in the walls of the lateral ventricles continue to proliferate postnatally. Shortly after BrdU treatment (seven days) most labelled cells were found in the walls of the lateral ventricles (ventricular zone: VZ). Thyroid hormone deficiency disrupts rat eye neurodevelopment

Clinical and experimental studies have highlighted the role played by thyroid hormones (TH) in neural and neuro-sensorial development. However, knowledge on TH mechanisms on the developing visual system is still incomplete. To uncover TH actions on the eyes and vision we carried out a microscopical study on the role of TH in the developing retina and optic nerve, in a rat model of controlled TH deficiency (THD). Effects of combined therapy of clopidogrel and aspirin in preventing thrombus formation on mechanical heart valves in an ex vivo rabbit model.

Abstract Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy of the combination of clopidogrel and aspirin in the prevention of thrombus formation on artificial heart valves in an experimental rabbit model as compared to anticoagulation with warfarin. Methods: Studies were performed after oral administration of clopidogrel and aspirin in group I (n=9) for 5 days, after 5±2 days treatment with warfarin in group II (n=9) and without medication in group III (n=9). Plasma membrane Ca2+ ATPase 4 is required for sperm motility and male fertility.

Calcium and Ca(2+)-dependent signals play a crucial role in sperm motility and mammalian fertilization, but the molecules and mechanisms underlying these Ca(2+)-dependent pathways are incompletely understood. Here we show that homozygous male mice with a targeted gene deletion of isoform 4 of the plasma membrane calcium/calmodulin-dependent calcium ATPase (PMCA), which is highly enriched in the sperm tail, are infertile due to severely impaired sperm motility. Mouse photoreceptor synaptic ribbons lose and regain material in response to illumination changes

Abstract Chemical synapses equipped with ribbons are tonically active, high-output synapses. The ribbons may play a role in the trafficking of synaptic vesicles. Recent findings in retinal rod cells of BALB/c mice indicate that ribbons are large and smooth in the dark phase, and, due to the formation and release of protrusions, small during the light phase.
